If you spot a Google Account session you don’t recognize, review it from a trusted device, sign out the unfamiliar session, and then secure your password, recovery details, and sign-in methods. A strange location or recent activity time can be misleading on its own, so check the session details—but treat activity you did not initiate as suspicious.
How to check which devices are signed in to your Google Account
- On a device you trust, open your Google Account.
- Go to Security & sign-in > Your devices > Manage all devices. Labels may vary by device or account type.
- Review the listed devices and sessions, including device type, time, location, and other available details. If you received a Google sign-in alert, compare it with what you were doing and use Google’s secure-account response if you did not initiate the activity.
A location is not necessarily exact, and activity from services such as Gmail or Calendar can make a session’s displayed time seem more recent than you expect. Consider those details together rather than trusting a session just because its location looks familiar. Google explains device sessions and activity details.

How to sign out a device or session you don’t recognize
- In Manage all devices, select the device or session you want to remove.
- Choose Sign out and follow any confirmation prompts.
- If several sessions have the same device name and you cannot tell which one is yours, sign out all sessions with that name. You can sign in again on devices you still use.
If Google’s sign-in alert indicates an activity was not yours, report it through Google’s secure-account response. Google says that reporting the activity as not yours signs the account out on other devices. See Google’s instructions for unfamiliar activity.

Change your Google Account password
Set a new, unique password as soon as you can. If you reused the old password elsewhere, change it on those sites and apps too—particularly accounts that use your Google email address for sign-in or recovery. Signing out a session is not a substitute for changing a password that may have been exposed. Google’s suspicious-activity guidance covers password protection and other security checks.

Check recent security activity and recovery details
Review recent security events, your recovery phone and email, any alternate or contact email, and your 2-Step Verification settings and methods. Correct changes you do not recognize. Check apps and services with access to your account, and remove access you no longer need. Google’s compromised-account checklist provides additional steps.
Run Security Checkup
Use Google Security Checkup for recommendations tailored to your account. Signing out an unfamiliar session does not, by itself, review recovery routes, verification methods, or third-party app access.

How to strengthen future Google Account sign-ins
Google recommends passkeys and 2-Step Verification. Passkeys and security keys are phishing-resistant options. If you use a password with a second step rather than a passkey, consider Google prompts or a security key; text and phone-call codes can be more vulnerable to attacks that target your phone number. Choose a method you can use reliably and keep a backup recovery option available. Google’s 2-Step Verification guide explains the available options.

For a physical option, a FIDO2-compatible hardware security key may be suitable, but check that it works with your devices and account setup. Keep a backup method, such as backup codes or another trusted device, somewhere safe. Google’s account-security guidance describes security keys and other protections.

If you can’t sign in or your recovery details changed
If you are locked out, or someone changed your recovery information, use Google’s account recovery and compromised-account guidance. If you cannot complete 2-Step Verification, follow Google’s recovery instructions for 2-Step Verification. Recovery is not guaranteed, so use Google’s official flows and provide the information they request.
These steps are for consumer Google Accounts. Work, school, and other organization-managed accounts may have administrator-controlled policies; contact your administrator if a setting is unavailable or an account policy blocks the steps.
