If you think someone accessed your Facebook account, use Meta’s recovery flow at facebook.com/hacked, preferably on a device you’ve used to log in before. But a message being shared or seen by someone else does not, by itself, prove that your account was hacked. The specific Messenger leak, its cause and the people affected are not established by the available information, so first separate possible account access from a message disclosure.
First, work out what may have happened
Look for signs of access you did not authorize, such as unfamiliar account activity or security notices you cannot explain. Separately, consider whether your concern is that a recipient or another person has received, forwarded or shown a message. A message disclosure and an account takeover are different problems; the information available does not establish that every suspected Messenger leak involves a hacked Facebook account.

If you do not know whether your account was accessed, avoid treating the leak claim alone as proof. The incident, its scope and its cause are not identified here. If you do see indications that someone else accessed the account, start with Meta’s account-recovery route.
If someone may have accessed your account, recover it through Meta
Facebook’s Help Center directs people who believe their account was hacked to facebook.com/hacked, using a device they have used to log in before. Follow the prompts in Meta’s recovery flow rather than relying on messages from strangers who claim they can recover the account for you.

Be alert to impostor support messages and phishing attempts during recovery. Facebook says it offers login alerts and two-factor authentication, and points users to guidance about phishing and malicious software in its account-security overview.
After recovery, strengthen sign-in protection
Turn on two-factor authentication and review login alerts
In Facebook’s security settings, enable two-factor authentication and review the available login-alert options. These protections help you monitor sign-ins and add a check beyond your password. Use Facebook’s current in-account instructions to find the settings, since menu labels and availability may vary.

Consider a compatible security key
Facebook supports adding a third-party Universal 2nd Factor (U2F) or FIDO2 security key as a login protection. A key is an optional measure for future sign-ins—not a way to retract a message that someone has already seen or copied.
Before buying one, check that the key’s connection method works with the browser and device you use to access Facebook. Meta specifically advises checking compatibility before purchase. The available guidance does not establish that a particular model will work for every account, device or browser, so do not assume compatibility from the key’s label alone. Also consider how you will retain access if you lose the key, using recovery options Facebook makes available for your account.

Do not reset Messenger secure storage as a generic leak response
Resetting Messenger’s security method is not a message-recall feature. Meta warns that deleting secure storage permanently deletes the encrypted chat history held there, and says Messenger cannot restore that backup. Do not delete secure storage simply because you suspect a leak; make that choice only if you understand and accept the loss of the stored history.

Deleting your account does not remove copies of messages from recipients’ inboxes. Meta says messages you sent may remain visible to friends after account deletion because copies are stored in their inboxes. Account deletion therefore cannot undo a disclosure that has already occurred.
