If someone shared intimate images of you without your permission, it is not your fault. You can limit unwanted contact, preserve useful evidence, report the content and tighten account privacy. If someone may have access to your account, use that service’s official security and recovery process; the steps differ by provider.
What should you do first?
If you can do so safely, record basic details before muting or blocking the person. You do not need to keep viewing or engaging with the material to take action.

- Preserve non-explicit details: note the person’s username or handle, profile URL, where they contacted you, the full URL of any public post, dates and times, and any threats or messages. Save report numbers and platform responses.
- Use screenshots for context where safe: the Australian eSafety Commissioner says screenshots, photos or recordings of the screen can be a quick way to collect evidence. Do not download, forward or attach sexual images of anyone under 18, or other illegal or restricted content. If a minor is depicted, use the relevant platform and child-safety reporting routes instead.
- Reduce contact: after keeping safe, non-explicit evidence, use the service’s mute, hide or block controls as appropriate. You do not have to respond to the person.
- Secure accounts that may be exposed: if you suspect someone knows your password, has access to your account or has taken it over, go directly to that provider’s official security or account-recovery instructions. The correct recovery steps depend on the service.
If collecting evidence would put you at risk or prolong unwanted contact, prioritize your immediate safety and ask someone you trust or a support service to help.

Use the privacy and safety controls on the accounts where the person can reach you or where your information is visible. The exact labels vary by service, but look for settings that control audience, discoverability, messaging and unwanted interactions.

- Restrict who can view your profile, posts, stories or contact details.
- Limit who can send messages, tag or mention you, or find your account through a phone number or email address, where those controls are available.
- Mute, hide or block the person if that is the safest option. Blocking can reduce contact, but it does not remove content already posted elsewhere.
- If you cannot access an account or think someone else can, follow the provider’s official recovery and security guidance rather than relying on a generic password-reset sequence.
eSafety recommends limiting contacts through privacy settings and blocking after evidence collection where possible. Account recovery, password changes and other security controls are provider-specific; use the official help route for the affected service.
How do you report the images and ask for removal?
Report the specific post, image or account through the platform’s reporting control, or use its official support channel if there is no suitable post-level option. The Federal Trade Commission’s consumer guidance notes that only platforms can take down intimate photos and videos shared without consent.

When making a removal request, eSafety recommends using a new email address if possible and avoiding unnecessary disclosure of your home address, phone number or complete identity documents. Keep a copy of the report details and any reply.
U.S. reporting under the Take It Down Act
In guidance published in September 2026, the FTC says platforms covered by the U.S. Take It Down Act must provide a way to report covered nonconsensual intimate images, including deepfakes. Covered platforms must remove the images and copies within 48 hours after a request. That deadline applies to platforms covered by the Act; it is not a guarantee that every website, private message or service worldwide will remove material on that schedule. If a covered platform lacks a functioning reporting process or fails to act, the FTC directs people to TakeItDown.ftc.gov.

Australia’s eSafety route
In Australia, eligible complainants can report image-based abuse to the eSafety Commissioner without first reporting it to the platform. Direct reporting to the service may sometimes be the fastest way to address a post, but prior platform contact is not a requirement for an eSafety report.
Can a hash tool help prevent the images from being reposted?
Hash tools create a digital fingerprint of an image so participating services can detect matching uploads. They do not send the image itself through the StopNCII process described by the FTC, and they cannot guarantee removal or prevention across every website. Report material that is already posted to the platform; a hash tool can be an additional step to help prevent matching uploads on participating services.

Choose based on the age of the person depicted when the image was made, not their age today. The tools’ reach depends on participating services.
What if someone is threatening or extorting you?
If someone demands money, gift cards, cryptocurrency, more images or another action to stop them sharing intimate material, eSafety describes this as sexual extortion. Do not pay or send more content. Stop contact if you can, preserve non-explicit records of the threats and account details, and report the person and messages to the platform.

In the United States, the FTC points people to local law enforcement and the FBI. If a minor is involved, NCMEC’s CyberTipline is an additional reporting route. If you are in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.
Where can you get support?
You can ask a trusted person to sit with you while you secure accounts or make reports. Confidential counselling or specialist support is also an option; you do not need to seek it before taking practical steps. The eSafety Commissioner, Australia’s online safety regulator, says: “It’s not your fault and you’re not alone.”
