First find out what information was exposed; then change any affected or reused passwords and strengthen account sign-in. If you can no longer log in or see changes you did not make, treat that as an active account takeover and use the service’s recovery process. This guide follows U.S. Federal Trade Commission guidance.
1. Find out what the breach exposed
Read the notice from the organization involved and identify whether it says a password, email address, payment information, Social Security number, or other identity details were exposed. An exposure notice is not proof that every account you own has been accessed.

For advice matched to the type of information involved, use the FTC’s data-breach guidance. If a message about a breach seems unexpected, do not rely on its links. Visit the organization’s known website yourself or go directly to IdentityTheft.gov.

Change the password for the affected service as soon as possible. Then change it anywhere else you used the same or a similar password. Give every account its own password so that a password exposed in one breach cannot unlock another account.

The FTC suggests considering a password manager to create and keep track of complex, unique passwords. It is an optional convenience, not a prerequisite for securing your accounts. See the FTC’s breach guidance for its password advice.
3. Turn on stronger sign-in protection
Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on important accounts, especially email, financial, payment, and social accounts. MFA adds a second proof of identity beyond your password. Where the service offers stronger methods, the FTC recommends an authenticator app or security key instead of codes sent by text or email; it describes security keys as the strongest MFA option among those it discusses. Availability depends on the service and your device, so check compatibility before choosing one. A hardware security key is an optional physical tool, not a requirement.

Plan for recovery if you use a security key: check how the account lets you regain access if the key is lost. The FTC explains account protection and MFA options in Creating Strong Passwords and Other Ways To Protect Your Accounts.
4. If you suspect an account takeover, recover it and inspect it
Inability to log in, an unexpected password change, or activity you did not authorize can indicate that someone has taken control. Follow the service provider’s official account-recovery instructions. FTC guidance for hacked email or social-media accounts recommends these checks after you regain access:

- Change the password and sign out of other devices or sessions.
- Verify that the recovery email address and phone number are yours.
- Check email forwarding rules and account activity for changes you did not make.
- Review sent and deleted messages, and inspect social messages for unauthorized activity.
- Warn contacts to ignore suspicious messages sent from the account.
5. Secure your email account early
Email deserves early attention because someone who can access your inbox may be able to receive password-reset links for other services. Change its password if it was exposed or reused, turn on MFA, and check forwarding settings, recovery details, and sent or deleted messages for signs of unauthorized access. If you cannot get in, use the email provider’s official recovery process.

If the breach involved Social Security or other identity information, use the FTC’s data-breach guidance for steps related to the specific data. If someone is using your information, report the identity theft at IdentityTheft.gov and follow the personalized recovery plan.

A credit freeze and a fraud alert are free U.S. options, but they work differently. A freeze restricts access to your credit report and can help prevent new credit accounts; it does not secure an existing login or payment account, and it does not prevent every kind of fraud. The FTC says a freeze does not affect your credit score and remains in place until you lift it. You must request it separately from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.

The FTC explains the credit-freeze process and the differences between these options. Both are free; choose based on whether you want to restrict access to your credit report and are prepared to lift the freeze when needed, or prefer the identity-verification alert.
