Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDisable Telnet, SSH version 1, and any router or IoT management interface you do not need. If administration is necessary, use SSH version 2 (SSHv2) for command-line access or HTTPS for browser access, and restrict connections to a trusted management network or specific administrator devices. Do not expose device administration directly to the public internet.
Choose the safest management option your device supports
| Option | When to use it | Security boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Management interface disabled | Use when nobody needs to administer the device through that service. | Removes that service as an access path; check each interface because disabling it in one place may not disable it everywhere. |
| SSHv2 | Use when command-line administration is required. | Use SSHv2 only, turn off SSHv1, and allow access only from approved administrator hosts or networks. |
| HTTPS | Use when browser-based administration is required. | Enable HTTPS, disable HTTP, and make the web interface reachable only through a management interface or network. |
| Telnet or HTTP | Do not use for management when a secure alternative is available. | These do not provide the encryption expected of a secure management channel. CISA recommends disabling unencrypted services such as Telnet and HTTP. |
CISA’s 2025 advisory, Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System, says: “Only use encrypted and authenticated management protocols (e.g., SSH, SFTP/SCP, HTTPS) and disable all others, especially unencrypted protocols (e.g., Telnet, FTP, HTTP).” The advisory calls for SSHv2 only and HTTPS-only web management when web administration is needed.
Harden a router or IoT device step by step
- Inventory the devices. Record each router and IoT device’s model, firmware version, security-support status, and management services. Include services reachable over IPv4 and IPv6.
- Remove unnecessary access paths. In the device’s current vendor documentation, find settings for Telnet, SSH, web administration, and other management services. Turn off Telnet, SSHv1, HTTP administration, and any service that is not required. Do not assume one setting controls access on every interface.
- Configure command-line access only if it is needed. Enable SSHv2 and disable SSHv1. Restrict the service to approved source addresses using the device’s access controls or upstream network rules. Where supported and operationally feasible, use public-key authentication for administrator accounts and limit repeated authentication attempts.
- Configure web administration only if it is needed. Enable HTTPS, disable HTTP, and make administration available only through the management interface, management VRF, or a dedicated management network. Use centralized authentication (AAA) where the device supports it.
- Separate management from ordinary traffic. Where practical, keep management access off user and IoT networks. Use a dedicated management VLAN or VRF, default-deny access rules, and trusted administrator workstations. For environments where direct access is unsuitable, a monitored jump host can provide a controlled route to the devices. Out-of-band management offers a separate path where the deployment can support it.
- Secure accounts and maintain the device. Replace default administrative credentials with unique, strong credentials. Require multifactor authentication (MFA) for sensitive administration where supported. Install supported firmware updates and replace devices that have reached the end of security support.
- Verify and monitor. Review login and configuration-change logs. Periodically check authorized internal and external views to confirm that only intended services are reachable. Include IPv6 in those checks.
- Document exceptions. If an operational or legacy requirement prevents disabling a service, record its owner, permitted source addresses, compensating controls, and review date.
Keep administration off the public internet
Do not make router or IoT administration directly reachable from the public internet. Prefer out-of-band management or a dedicated, enforced management network. If administrators need a remote route, use an appropriately controlled and monitored path, such as a jump host, rather than opening the device’s management service to everyone online. CISA’s communications infrastructure hardening guidance and internet exposure reduction guidance recommend reducing exposure and controlling management access.

Limit IoT network traffic to what the device needs
Management-interface hardening controls who can administer a device; it does not by itself limit what the device can communicate with. Network restrictions can reduce that separate risk by allowing only traffic required for the device’s intended function. NIST’s Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) practice guide describes automatically permitting required communications and prohibiting other traffic. Whether this is practical depends on device and network support.
Use the right instructions for your model
Menu names, controls, and commands differ by manufacturer, model, and firmware. Follow the vendor’s current instructions and confirm that you retain a necessary recovery path before changing access settings. CISA’s communications infrastructure guidance includes Cisco IOS examples such as no ip http server and no ip http secure-server; these apply to the described Cisco software contexts and are not universal commands for consumer routers or IoT devices.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For broader context on consumer-router security outcomes, see NIST’s Recommended Cybersecurity Requirements for Consumer-Grade Router Products (NIST IR 8425A), published September 10, 2024. It does not replace the instructions for a particular device.
