How to Secure Small-Business Routers and IoT Devices Against Remote Takeover

A practical sequence for reducing remote-takeover risk: secure router administration and Wi-Fi, separate less-trusted devices, maintain updates, and govern remote access.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the risk of remote takeover by locking down the router’s administrator account, securing Wi-Fi, separating guest and IoT devices, keeping software updated, and limiting remote access. These controls reduce exposure; none guarantees that a router or connected device cannot be compromised.

1. Lock down router administration

Use a unique administrator password and replace any preset username or password. Disable remote management if the business does not need to administer the router from outside its network, and log out of the administrator account when finished. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance recommends these steps.

Keep the router’s administration interface available only to people who need it. Changing the Wi-Fi network name alone is not a meaningful security boundary; prioritize credentials, encryption, and separation between groups of devices.

2. Protect Wi-Fi and separate visitors

Enable WPA2 or WPA3 wireless encryption, if supported, and use a strong, unique password for staff Wi-Fi. Create a separate guest or public network for visitors and for personal devices that should not share the primary business network. Keep business systems and sensitive data on the primary network rather than exposing them to guest traffic.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the router cannot provide the encryption or network separation the business needs, include those capabilities in the requirements for replacement equipment.

3. Keep router and device software current

Check the router manufacturer’s update mechanism or support page for firmware updates. Turn on automatic updates when the manufacturer offers a secure, supported option. Keep software updated on other devices connected to the business network as well. The FTC recommends keeping router software current and checking for patches in its remote-access guidance.

4. Inventory and restrict IoT devices

Know what is connected

Keep a list of the connected devices used by the business, who is responsible for each, and its business purpose. Investigate devices that are unfamiliar or no longer needed. The FTC’s IoT security guidance recommends taking steps to secure connected devices.

Limit access and communications

Give administrative permissions only to people who need them. Where the network supports it, place IoT devices on a separate network from computers and systems that hold sensitive business data. Monitor what is connecting to the network and what devices are attempting to communicate.

Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) is an additional control supported by some network and device environments. NIST’s SP 1800-15 describes using MUD to allow an IoT device to send and receive the traffic required for its intended function while blocking other communication. Availability depends on the device, router, and service; MUD does not replace other protections.

5. Govern employee and vendor remote access

Set requirements for employees and vendors before allowing them to connect remotely. Use secure connections, limit each person’s access to what their work requires, and include security requirements in vendor arrangements when vendors connect to business systems. A VPN may be one option for remote connections, but it is not a guarantee of security or a complete security program. See the FTC’s guidance on securing remote access.

Verify these details for the exact model with its manufacturer. If the existing equipment cannot meet the business’s requirements, or the network is difficult to segment and manage safely, consider replacement or help from a qualified IT professional.
