To secure a deployed MikroTik router after a vulnerability disclosure, identify the exact advisory, update to a fixed release appropriate for the router’s branch and update channel, then restrict management access to trusted networks. Patching closes the disclosed defect; it does not prove that a router exposed before the update was never compromised. Review users, sessions, logs and configuration for signs of access or persistence as part of the response.
Start with the exact MikroTik security notice
There is no single RouterOS version that fixes every vulnerability. Record the router model, installed RouterOS version, update channel and the specific notice you are responding to. Then compare the installed release with the fixed versions named in that notice, and check MikroTik’s security announcements and download and release information for current guidance.

Keep disclosures separate: fixed releases and affected conditions from one notice do not automatically apply to another. For example, MikroTik’s security page describes CVE-2026-52346 as an out-of-bounds read in code that inspects TLS traffic for firewall rules matching TLS connections. The vendor says the vulnerable code is active only when a router has at least one tls-host firewall rule, and lists 7.22.2 stable and 7.21.4 long-term or later as fixed. Those details apply to that CVE, not to every RouterOS disclosure. MikroTik security announcements

A separate MikroTik notice dated September 3, 2026 lists fixes in 7.25 beta 3, 7.24.2, 7.23.4 and 6.49.21. Those are the releases named for that notice; do not transfer its version numbers or conditions to CVE-2026-52346, or vice versa. MikroTik security announcements

- hEX also known as RB750Gr3 is a five port Gigabit Ethernet router for locations where wireless connectivity is not required
- The device has a full size USB port. This new updated revision of the hEX brings several improvements in performance
- It is affordable, small and easy to use, but at the same time comes with a very powerful dual core 880MHz CPU and 256MB RAM
- IPsec hardware encryption (~470 Mbps) and The Dude server package is supported, microSD slot on it provides improved r/w speed for file storage and Dude
- Dimensions: 113x89x28mm; Storage size: 16 MB; Passive PoE (PoE in); PCB temperature monitor, Voltage monitor and Mode button
Choose a release by checking three things together: the advisory’s fixed-version minimum, the router’s installed branch, and the currently offered stable or long-term channel. Treat beta releases as beta rather than as the default production target. A fixed-version number in an advisory is not necessarily the latest appropriate update for your device.
Plan and install the update
- Record the current state. Note the model, RouterOS version, update channel and relevant configuration-dependent conditions stated in the advisory.
- Make a backup and export the configuration. Do this before a planned upgrade so you have a record of the router’s settings. If compromise is suspected, do not assume that restoring a saved configuration onto the same device is a safe cleanup method.
- Schedule the maintenance. An upgrade can interrupt connectivity. Choose a window that accounts for the router’s role and the possibility that remote access may be unavailable during the update.
- Install the appropriate fixed release. Follow MikroTik’s RouterOS upgrade instructions, selecting a suitable release for the device and channel. Check the release information for device- or feature-specific issues before proceeding.
- Confirm the result. After the router returns, verify that it is running the intended release and that required routing and management functions work.
Keep management services off untrusted networks
Do not expose WinBox, SSH or other router-management services broadly to the internet. MikroTik says its default firewall blocks WAN access to the device and cautions against removing those rules unless the connection is secure. The September 3, 2026 notice specifically advises ensuring that SSH is not open to untrusted networks. MikroTik firewall guidance · MikroTik security announcements

For remote administration, MikroTik recommends VPN access, such as WireGuard, and says not to open management ports when VPN access is available. If management must be reachable from a remote network, restrict it to trusted source addresses and enforce the restriction with firewall input rules. Service-level address restrictions are an additional control for trusted networks, not a substitute for blocking untrusted sources at the firewall. Audit services, firewall rules and administrative access
- Check IP services. Review which management paths are enabled, including WinBox, SSH, WebFig, API, FTP and Telnet. Disable services that are not needed. MikroTik documents service configuration and address restrictions in its IP services guide.
- Review firewall input rules. Confirm that router access from WAN and other untrusted networks is blocked, and that any allowed management traffic is limited to administration networks. MikroTik’s firewall guidance describes its recommended protections.
- Inspect users and groups. Look for unfamiliar accounts, unexpected group assignments and login-address restrictions. RouterOS user records include login address and group; see the user documentation.
- Review active sessions. RouterOS supports active-user monitoring and session logout. Use these controls to identify and end sessions that should not be active; the user documentation explains the available controls.
Check for signs of compromise after patching
RouterOS checks for signs of compromise and may mark a device Flagged, with a critical log entry. Inspect the critical log for that status and follow MikroTik’s Flagged-status instructions if it appears.
Also compare the configuration against what you expect. Look for unknown users, scripts, scheduler entries or other unfamiliar settings. A clean Flagged check or familiar-looking account list is not proof that the router was never accessed or that no persistence remains.
If you find suspicious changes or otherwise suspect compromise, treat the situation as incident response rather than as a routine software update. Preserve relevant evidence and use MikroTik’s compromise guidance or qualified network-security support. The cited vendor notices do not prescribe a complete forensic procedure, so the right investigation depends on the device and circumstances.
