Device unlock, bank verification when adding a card, and a card PIN are different things; understanding which one applies helps you avoid gaps and confusion.
Set up a screen lock for Google Wallet
Google Wallet requires a screen lock for secure in-store payments. Google Wallet Help states, “A screen lock will need to be set up to make secure payments with Google Wallet.” The exact menu names can vary by Android device maker and software version.

- Open your phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Security, then Device unlock, then Screen lock, if those options appear on your device.
- Choose and set a supported lock method: a PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric unlock.
If you cannot find those options, check your phone manufacturer’s support instructions. Do not assume every Android phone uses the same Settings labels.

Wallet purchase verification accepts a PIN, pattern, password, or Class 3 biometric unlock. Class 1 and Class 2 biometrics are not accepted for this verification, nor are convenience features such as Smart Unlock or Knock to Unlock. If one of those methods cannot verify a purchase, confirm it with your PIN, pattern, or password.

Understand “Verify it’s you” for a purchase
For a Wallet payment, verification means confirming your identity with the device’s screen lock. It is not the PIN for your bank card. Google says a successful verification may cover another transaction for a few minutes; after that short period expires, Wallet requires verification again.
That verification is separate from the issuer’s checks when you add a card. A bank may ask you to verify a newly added payment method, and the available method depends on the issuer and your region.

Transit payments are a limited exception
For supported transit systems, you can choose to pay without first unlocking the phone with its screen lock. In Google Wallet, go to Security → Verification settings → Transit payments and turn off Verification required. This setting applies to transit only; other payments still require verification. Some transit systems do not support skipping it.

Check your contactless setup and selected card
Google lists several prerequisites for paying contactlessly with a phone: NFC must be on, the payment method and country must be supported, the phone must have a screen lock, and Google Wallet must be the default NFC payment app. Availability varies by country or region.

Wallet uses the currently selected default card when you tap to pay. Before a purchase, check that the intended card is selected, particularly if you have more than one stored.

When you add a payment method, your bank may ask you to prove that you own the card. Depending on the bank and region, the options shown may include receiving a code by text or email, verifying by phone, signing in through the bank’s app or website, or entering a temporary authorization code from a statement. Follow the method your issuer presents; this process is not the same as unlocking the phone to authorize a Wallet purchase.

If your phone is lost or stolen
- Use Google’s lost-device controls to try to find or lock the Android phone, or erase it if needed. Google’s lost or stolen device guidance explains these actions.
- If you erase the device, its payment information, including credit and debit cards, is removed from that phone.
- If you only need to remove a particular payment method, use Wallet’s instructions for removing a card. Google notes that cards may also disappear as a security precaution if you turn off the screen lock, lock or remotely wipe the device, or factory-reset it. You may need to add a removed card again.
- If someone may have access to your Google Account, secure the account as well as the device.
- If you suspect fraud or unauthorized activity on a payment method, Google Wallet Help says to report it within 120 days of the transaction date.
