Secure document summarization requires more than checking file extensions or writing a careful system prompt. Protect the entire path: validate and isolate uploads, keep originals and extracted text private, limit what reaches the model, and prevent unreviewed model output from taking privileged actions.
1. Define what the upload endpoint will accept
Start with an explicit upload contract: which formats the summarizer needs, the maximum request and file sizes, and the amount of processing it will allow. Reject formats the product does not need. Limits should cover processing work and, where archives are accepted, decompressed size as well as the uploaded size; a small compressed file can expand into a much larger workload.

Validate names and content independently
- Decode and normalize filenames before checking allowed extensions. Account for case changes, double extensions, and null-byte tricks that can undermine simplistic checks.
- Do not treat the client-supplied
Content-Typeheader as proof of a file’s format. Verify content independently using checks appropriate to the formats the service accepts. - Generate a server-side identifier and storage filename. Do not use the submitted filename as a filesystem path.
- Set request, file, and processing limits so malformed or unusually large uploads cannot consume unbounded storage or compute.
OWASP’s File Upload Cheat Sheet warns that “There is no silver bullet in validating user content” and recommends defense in depth. Validation makes an upload harder to abuse; it does not establish that a file is harmless.

Make file processing a contained operation
File parsers and their dependencies are part of the attack surface. Keep them updated, configure them securely, and isolate document processing from the main application where the architecture permits. Use antivirus or sandbox scanning where available, and consider content disarm and reconstruction for applicable formats such as PDF and DOCX. These measures complement validation rather than replacing it.

2. Keep originals and derived content private
Uploaded files are only one part of the data being handled. A summarizer may also create extracted text, temporary processing artifacts, summaries, logs, and backups. Decide which of these the service actually needs to retain, who may access them, and how deletion works.
Separate storage from public delivery
- Prefer a separate storage host. If that is not practical, keep files outside the web root.
- Grant the application only the filesystem permissions it needs.
- Use an application-controlled identifier to locate an object, not a predictable public URL or user-supplied path.
- Authorize every retrieval against the requesting user’s access rights. A hard-to-guess identifier is not a substitute for authorization.
OWASP’s upload guidance identifies unsafe public retrieval and file overwrites among the risks to address. Retrieval controls matter as much as upload controls: an otherwise well-protected file can still be exposed if the application serves it to the wrong person.

Protect data in transit, at rest, and during its lifecycle
Use encryption in transit for sensitive communications and encryption at rest for data that must remain protected after receipt. Restrict access to encryption keys through technical and procedural controls. Classify the information being processed and minimize collection and retention to what the service needs.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Define retention and deletion behavior for originals, extracted text, summaries, temporary artifacts, logs, and backups. General OWASP guidance does not establish one retention period for every summarizer; the service owner must set a period appropriate to the service’s purpose and obligations, and ensure deletion behavior accounts for copies and backups.

Reduce secondary exposure
- Keep sensitive values out of URLs and query strings, which can be exposed through logs or other systems.
- Disable client caching on sensitive pages and set a referrer policy to reduce the chance of sensitive page details being passed to third parties.
- Keep routine logs useful for security and operations without copying document contents or credentials into them.
3. Treat extracted document text as hostile model input
A valid, readable document can contain instructions aimed at the AI rather than its human reader. OWASP’s GenAI guidance describes this as indirect prompt injection from external content, including uploaded files. The fact that text looks benign to a person does not make it trustworthy to a model that processes it.
Mark document text as untrusted data and maintain a clear boundary between that text and trusted application instructions. The model should receive only the material needed for the summarization task. Do not give it access to other users’ documents, secrets, or privileged tools just because it is processing a file.
Rank #4
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
OWASP’s LLM01:2025 Prompt Injection guidance states that retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and fine-tuning “do not fully mitigate prompt injection vulnerabilities.” Neither approach removes the need to constrain what the model can access or do.
Keep security decisions outside the prompt
Use application logic and access controls to enforce data boundaries. A system prompt can guide the model, but it is not an access-control mechanism. Limit model tools and permissions to the minimum required for summarization, and do not let unreviewed output trigger privileged actions. Apply suitable input and output checks, while recognizing that OWASP guidance does not establish that any single filter can fully neutralize prompt injection.

4. Decide what requires a person’s review
A summary is model output, not an independently verified account of the source document. Set review requirements according to how the result will be used, with human approval before high-impact actions. The application—not the model—should determine whether an action is authorized and whether approval has been recorded.
For a security review, trace a representative document through upload, parsing, storage, retrieval, model processing, and deletion. At each handoff, identify which component can read or change the data, what checks it performs, and whether the next component receives only what it needs. This turns “secure uploads” into a testable end-to-end design rather than a single endpoint setting.
5. Verify the safeguards in the chosen service
Do not infer a provider’s practices from the fact that it offers document summarization. Before sending sensitive documents to a hosted service, check its current documentation and contract for retention, use of uploads for training, access controls, and data location. Those terms vary by provider and can change; no particular service’s practices are established here.

For an internal implementation or a vendor assessment, compare the controls that determine actual exposure:
- Which formats are accepted, and whether content is verified independently of client-supplied metadata.
- Maximum request, file, and decompressed sizes, plus how parsing is isolated.
- Whether storage is separate from public delivery, files are outside the web root, and retrieval is authorized per user.
- How encryption, key access, retention, deletion, temporary files, and backups are handled.
- Whether scanning or content disarm and reconstruction is available for accepted document types.
- How document text is treated as untrusted, model tools and data access are constrained, and human review is required for consequential outputs.
NIST’s 2020 publication Security Considerations for Exchanging Files Over the Internet provides broader context for file-exchange security. It does not certify a particular summarizer or replace a threat model, provider review, or legal assessment.
