Upgrade affected Dell Container Storage Modules (CSM) components using Dell’s supported guidance, and immediately rotate the JWT signing secrets implicated in Dell’s hard-coded-credential finding. Then review Authorization token and TLS configuration, Kubernetes permissions, and exposure of CSM services. Dell’s advisory warns of unauthenticated administrative-access flaws and a separate CSM Operator flaw that could lead to root-level access on Kubernetes nodes; network restrictions and tighter permissions are defense in depth, not a substitute for remediation.
What Dell’s advisory says is at risk
Dell Technologies’ DSA-2026-448, initially released on October 1, 2026, covers multiple vulnerabilities in Dell Container Storage Modules. CSM is a Kubernetes storage-enabler suite. CSM Authorization places a proxy between a CSI driver and storage so it can enforce role-based access and usage rules. The findings therefore concern both Authorization services and Kubernetes-side components, not just the cluster control plane.

The CVSS values below are CVSS 3.1 base scores published by Dell in the advisory. They are not a measure of risk in a particular cluster; Dell advises customers to consider relevant temporal and environmental scores as well.

Which Dell CSM version fixes the flaws?
Dell’s affected-products table says versions before 1.17.0 are affected and version 1.18.0 or later is remediated. The advisory also names CSM Authorization 2.4.0 for multiple Authorization findings and CSM Operator 1.12.0 for the operator finding. These references do not establish a one-to-one fixed-version mapping for every component. Dell cautions that its remediation table may not comprehensively list affected supported versions.

Do not determine that a cluster is safe from a broad CSM version label alone. Inventory the deployed CSM Operator, modules, Authorization component, and relevant CSI drivers and sidecars; record their image tags and namespaces. Match each component and supported branch against Dell’s current advisory and upgrade guidance before declaring it remediated. Dell recommends upgrading affected components at the earliest opportunity and lists no workaround.
How to secure a deployment
1. Establish what is installed and exposed
For every cluster, identify whether it runs CSM and which components are present: the CSM Operator, CSM Authorization, and relevant CSI drivers and sidecars. Record image tags, namespaces, connected storage backends, and any ingress or service endpoints that make Authorization or management services reachable. Include these components in the exposure review rather than limiting it to Kubernetes control-plane access.
2. Upgrade through Dell’s supported path
Use Dell’s current supported upgrade instructions for the exact deployed components and branch. The broad version statement in DSA-2026-448 is useful for urgency, but Dell’s completeness caveat means it is not enough to infer the status of every installation. Network filtering, permission reduction, and secret rotation may reduce risk, but none repairs vulnerable CSM code.

3. Rotate and protect JWT signing material
Where affected CSM Authorization versions or signing material may be involved, follow Dell’s explicit instruction to rotate JWT signing secrets for CVE-2026-54472. Coordinate rotation with the CSM and storage administrators so services and tenant credentials remain consistent. The cited Dell documentation does not establish a universal rotation command, so use Dell’s supported procedure rather than improvising one.
CSM Authorization v2 documentation describes a Kubernetes Secret named proxy-authz-tokens that holds tenant JWTs; the storage administrator generates tenant tokens. Protect administrator signing secrets, administrator tokens, and tenant access and refresh tokens as privileged credentials. Review which identities can read or modify the relevant Secrets. Keep signing material out of shell history, manifests, repositories, tickets, and logs.
Dell’s Authorization v2 documentation describes access tokens as short-lived, with a one-minute default, and says refresh tokens have a configured lifetime and are not automatically refreshed. Its configuration documentation gives an administrator-token example using a 1m30s access-token expiration and a 720h refresh-token expiration. These are documented defaults and an example, not a universal policy; select values and renewal procedures appropriate to the deployment and Dell’s guidance.

4. Keep certificate validation enabled
CSM Authorization documentation describes a proxy-server-root-certificate Secret containing the root CA that a sidecar uses to verify TLS to the Authorization Proxy Server. Use a trusted CA chain and confirm that certificate validation is enabled for the relevant driver and sidecar configuration. The documentation distinguishes sidecar-to-proxy validation from proxy-to-storage validation; similarly named settings govern different connections. Dell describes insecure mode as not recommended for production. Certificate checks matter particularly because DSA-2026-448 includes a proxy certificate-validation finding.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors5. Narrow Kubernetes permissions
Kubernetes warns that permission to create or edit pods can provide paths to mount arbitrary Secrets, use another ServiceAccount’s authority, or access other workloads’ ConfigMaps and volumes. Custom resources can also expose privilege-escalation paths. Review who can create or edit:
- Pods and workload controllers in CSM and storage namespaces.
- CSM custom resources, including who can submit changes that the operator reconciles.
- Secrets, ServiceAccounts, and RBAC objects, especially grants that reach beyond the required namespace or operations.
Grant only the operations and namespaces each identity needs. Review the CSM Operator service account’s privileges and use admission controls for custom resources where appropriate. Validate effective permissions with kubectl auth can-i for the relevant identity, verb, resource, and namespace; where authorized, include impersonation checks. These measures reduce Kubernetes escalation opportunities but do not fix unauthenticated CSM endpoints or vulnerable reconciliation code.

6. Limit network reachability
Restrict access to Authorization services and management endpoints to the clients and networks that require it. This is a prudent containment measure, not a Dell-listed workaround: DSA-2026-448 lists no workaround or mitigation. Do not treat a service being internal or network-filtered as proof that its vulnerable component is remediated.

If affected components were reachable from untrusted or broader-than-needed networks, or untrusted identities could submit CSM custom resources, follow your organization’s incident-response process. Review available CSM and Kubernetes audit or application logs for unexpected Authorization administrative actions, tenant or role changes, custom-resource submissions, Secret access, and workload or RBAC creation. These are prudent review areas, not Dell-confirmed indicators of compromise; the cited materials do not provide a detection rule or log query, nor do they establish that a particular deployment was exploited.
