How to Secure DeepSeek Harness Before Giving It Access to Files or Shell Commands

DeepSeek Harness’s sandbox limits file effects, not the whole machine or network. Start in a disposable, low-privilege environment, keep the workspace narrow, and verify enforcement before granting write or shell access.

Before giving DeepSeek Harness access to a repository or shell, run it in a disposable, low-privilege environment with only the files it needs, start in read-only mode, and review each request to widen access. For untrusted code or content, use a separate isolation layer such as a container, microVM, or remote executor: Harness’s own sandbox is not whole-machine isolation and does not claim to block network access. DeepSeek’s safety documentation says Harness has not undergone a security audit and must not be treated as secure or production-ready.

Is DeepSeek Harness safe to give shell access?

There is no blanket yes. Shell access lets an agent run model-generated commands and code with the authority available to its tools and environment. Whether a particular setup is acceptable depends on what it can read, change, execute, and reach over the network—and on how you contain damage if it behaves unexpectedly.

DeepSeek’s official Harness safety document, reviewed October 4, 2026, says: “It has not undergone a security audit and must not be treated as secure or production-ready.” The official Terms of Use reviewed the same day add: “Sandboxes, approval prompts, and permission controls can reduce risk, but they do not guarantee isolation and cannot guarantee that harm will be prevented.” Treat Harness as an experimental tool; do not use a prompt telling it to be careful as a substitute for access controls.

For experiments involving untrusted repositories, plugins, or instructions embedded in files, prefer a disposable VM, container, microVM, or remote executor. The Harness sandbox’s local process confinement shares the host kernel and filesystem, so it is not equivalent to a separate machine. The project itself advises against relying on Harness alone as the security control for untrusted workloads.

What do Harness sandbox modes actually allow?

The process-sandbox documentation describes modes in terms of file effects. Those names do not describe network restrictions or uniform process isolation. Platform enforcement can differ; consult the documentation for the version you installed rather than assuming every platform behaves identically.

Mode or boundary Documented effect Practical meaning
read-only Denies file writes, with limited required sinks such as /dev/null. DeepSeek Harness process-sandbox and Bash-sandbox documentation, reviewed October 4, 2026. A useful starting point for inspection. It does not stop tools from reading files already visible to them.
workspace-write Allows writes beneath the configured workspace root and in backend-defined temporary areas. DeepSeek Harness process-sandbox and Bash-sandbox documentation, reviewed October 4, 2026. Use only when edits are needed, and make the workspace a small, disposable checkout. This mode does not promise to prevent network exfiltration.
danger-full-access Bypasses confinement. DeepSeek Harness process-sandbox and Bash-sandbox documentation, reviewed October 4, 2026. It grants the Harness process its available authority; it is not a routine way to get past a blocked command.
Local process sandbox Defines file-effect policy and shares the host kernel and filesystem. Network access and process visibility are outside the stated mode vocabulary. DeepSeek Harness process-sandbox documentation and sandbox package README, reviewed October 4, 2026. Add an independent environment boundary when the workload or consequences warrant it.
Filesystem mutation fence Checks mutations against policy, but is documented as a policy fence rather than a kernel boundary and has residual race limitations. DeepSeek Harness filesystem sandbox README, reviewed October 4, 2026. Do not treat this fence alone as an operating-system sandbox.
Missing usable runner A confined Bash call should fail with SANDBOX_UNAVAILABLE rather than silently run unconfined. DeepSeek Harness Bash sandbox README, reviewed October 4, 2026. Stop and repair or replace the execution environment; do not bypass the failure by granting unrestricted execution.

For this reason, “sandboxed” should not be read as “isolated from the host and network.” If the task needs control over outbound traffic or process visibility, enforce those controls separately at the VM, container, microVM, operating-system, or remote-runner layer, and verify the selected layer’s actual behavior.

How do I stop an AI coding agent from accessing files outside my project?

Limit what exists in the environment as well as what the sandbox permits. A read-only policy cannot protect a credential or personal file that is already readable through an exposed tool or process.

  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  1. Create a disposable environment. Use a dedicated account or isolated execution environment for the task. For untrusted input, prefer a VM, container, microVM, or remote executor rather than relying on local Harness confinement alone.
  2. Put only the needed project files there. Use a minimal checkout and exclude personal documents, cloud-sync roots, SSH keys, API tokens, browser profiles, production credentials, and unrelated services. DeepSeek advises against exposing sensitive credentials or data unless you accept the risk.
  3. Make a recoverable copy first. Keep a backup of files Harness can reach, stored separately enough to remain useful if the workspace is damaged. DeepSeek recommends backups but does not prescribe a storage device, retention period, or tested recovery procedure. A separate external drive is one possible backup location; it helps recovery, not containment.
  4. Start with read-only access. Use the installed version’s documentation to configure the narrowest mode that still permits the inspection you need. Do not assume a setting for Bash automatically governs filesystem tools or plugins.
  5. Grant workspace writes only for an editing task. Keep the configured workspace narrow and disposable. Avoid including a home directory or broad shared folder merely for convenience.
  6. Keep secrets outside the reachable environment. Do not expose tokens or credentials to the process unless essential and explicitly accepted. A prompt asking the agent not to reveal them is not a technical barrier.

How should I configure and verify confinement?

DeepSeek’s current repository documentation describes sandbox backends and a sandbox policy as dependencies for the confined Bash executor. It also describes a shared policy that should be composed with the filesystem sandbox so file-tool protections and shell protections are aligned. The documentation reviewed October 4, 2026 was not pinned to a commit, so exact configuration names and platform steps may vary by installed release. Use that release’s own documentation; do not copy an assumed flag or menu path.

  1. Identify the installed release and platform. Open the documentation shipped with, or matching, that version. Find the process-sandbox, Bash-sandbox, shell, and filesystem-sandbox sections relevant to your setup.
  2. Check the actual executor composition. Confirm the confined Bash executor has its sandbox backend and policy, and that the filesystem sandbox uses the intended shared policy. Do not infer that every tool is confined because one visible setting is enabled.
  3. Use a harmless test workspace. Before adding valuable files, check that the selected mode has the expected effect on a disposable file and that the tools you plan to expose follow the same policy. Test the behavior of your installed version and platform rather than assuming a universal result.
  4. Confirm failure is closed. If a confined Bash call cannot obtain an enforcing runner, the documented behavior is an error such as SANDBOX_UNAVAILABLE, not silent unconfined execution. Treat that error as a stop signal.
  5. Review each escalation. DeepSeek documents broader permission escalation as a per-call request requiring approval before retry. Read the exact command, its justification, and the requested scope. Approve only if the operation is necessary and safe in the current environment.

If enforcement is missing or unclear, stop. Fix the backend or move the task to a more isolated executor; do not switch to danger-full-access simply to make a command succeed.

Does DeepSeek Harness sandbox block network access?

The documented sandbox modes are about file effects and do not claim to restrict network access. They also do not promise uniform process visibility. A program that can read sensitive data and reach the network may be able to send data out even if its file writes are confined.

When the task involves sensitive data or untrusted input, apply network egress restrictions separately at the environment layer and verify what they block. Also consider what processes can see or control. The appropriate controls depend on the host and executor; the Harness mode name alone is not evidence that network or process access is isolated.

What should I review before enabling plugins or extensions?

Plugins, MCP servers, skills, hooks, their dependencies, and their configuration can introduce their own capabilities and trust boundaries. DeepSeek advises using extensions and dependencies from trusted, reviewed sources.

  • Review the extension’s code and dependencies before enabling it.
  • Understand what files, commands, network services, and other tools it can access.
  • Keep extension configuration and credentials specific to the task; avoid exposing production secrets.
  • Disable extensions that are not needed for the operation.

Repository files, web pages, plugin content, and tool output may contain instructions intended to manipulate the agent. A sandbox limits some effects, but it does not remove prompt-injection risk or make untrusted content trustworthy.

What does published prompt-injection testing show?

A paper by Zonghao Ying, Xiangfan Wu, Huiyu Wu, Xing Zheng, Huangsheng Cheng, Xiaorong Shi, and Jing Guo of Tencent Zhuque Lab, dated August 17, 2026, reports 14,560 controlled executions across 16 indirect-content channels, text and file carrier modes, 35 payload objectives, and 12 attack methods. Its selected attack-success results include:

  • 17.0% for fake-completion attacks under the semantic LLM judge in text mode.
  • 25.5% for hidden-Unicode attacks under the rule-based judge in file mode.
  • 16.0% for skills-channel attacks under the rule-based judge in file mode.

These percentages describe those specific controlled tests, not the probability of an attack succeeding in every deployment. The researchers exercised the real Harness runtime with local source-and-sink fixtures, recorded attempted actions without external side effects, and used both deterministic rule-based and semantic LLM-based judges. The judges differed in their assessments of partial compliance. The figures are evidence that indirect prompt injection remains a relevant risk under the tested setup, not a real-world incident rate or a guarantee about any particular installation.

How should I handle consequential commands and changes?

Keep operations small enough that you can review what is about to happen and inspect what happened afterward. Separate risky work from routine inspection, and require human confirmation for consequential changes.

  • Review the exact command and its scope before approving any broader permission.
  • Inspect generated code and tests before merging or deploying changes.
  • Keep recovery copies outside the workspace that the agent can modify.
  • Do not use a production account or service when a disposable substitute will do.
  • After the task, review changed files and remove temporary credentials, access, or extensions that are no longer needed.
