How to Secure Connected Devices That Use AI-Powered Telecom Services

Connected-device security is shared across owners, manufacturers, service providers, and telecom operators. Learn what to check before connecting a device and how to manage it through its lifecycle.

Secure a connected device by evaluating the whole service, not just the device: identify the endpoint, the network and provider, and any app or cloud service it relies on; check the manufacturer’s security information and support; manage the device through its lifecycle; and ask the provider which security and privacy controls it operates. Responsibility is shared among the device owner, manufacturer, service provider, and—where relevant—the telecom operator. A telecom connection alone does not establish that an AI feature or the full service is secure.

Start by mapping the connected service

A phone or IoT appliance is only one part of a connected service. A device may exchange data with an app, a cloud service, a telecom network, and other systems. A weakness or poorly understood handoff in one part can matter to the whole arrangement. NIST’s IoT guidance therefore treats integration and risk across a system as important, rather than treating a device as an isolated object.

Before connecting a device—or when reviewing one already in use—write down what it connects to and who manages each part. This is a practical application of NIST’s system and lifecycle approach, not a universal checklist prescribed by NIST for every consumer service.

  1. Identify the endpoint. Record the device type and whether it is a phone, an IoT appliance, or another connected product. Note whether it is personally owned, organization-provided, or managed by an organization.
  2. Identify the service path. Find the associated app, account, cloud service, and network or telecom service. Use the manufacturer’s and provider’s descriptions; do not assume that a feature runs entirely on the device.
  3. Identify what the service can access. Review the product and service descriptions to understand what data it handles and what other devices, accounts, or systems it can interact with. The more consequential the access, the more important it is to understand who controls it.
  4. Assign an owner to each control. Separate what you can configure from what the manufacturer maintains and what the provider or operator runs. If a responsibility is unclear, ask the relevant party before relying on the service for a sensitive purpose.

NIST SP 800-213, published in November 2021, is specifically guidance for IoT device cybersecurity in federal government acquisition and system integration. NIST’s abstract cautions: “Organizations will increasingly use Internet of Things (IoT) devices for the mission benefits they can offer, but care must be taken in the acquisition and implementation of IoT devices.” The federal focus matters: it supports a careful, system-oriented way to think about connected devices, but it is not a consumer checklist or a rule that every consumer product must meet.

Check security and support before connecting

Security decisions start before deployment. NIST IR 8259 Rev. 1, Foundational Cybersecurity Activities for IoT Product Manufacturers, was revised in April 2026 and describes manufacturer activities to improve an IoT product’s securability and provide cybersecurity-related information to customers. Its scope includes pre-sale activities. For a buyer or current owner, the useful question is whether the manufacturer makes the device’s security capabilities and support arrangements understandable.

What to look for in the manufacturer’s information

  • Security capabilities: Does the manufacturer explain what security functions the device provides and what the owner or administrator needs to configure or manage?
  • Customer information: Is there clear cybersecurity-related information for setup, continued use, and maintenance? Can you find the relevant documentation for the exact device or product family?
  • Maintenance and security support: Does the manufacturer explain how security maintenance is delivered and how to obtain it?
  • Expected support lifecycle: Is there a stated period or end point for security support? If no period is stated, treat the support duration as unknown and ask rather than assuming that a device will be maintained indefinitely.
  • System fit: Does the documentation explain the device’s interfaces or how it is intended to integrate with the service or system you plan to use?

The source material does not establish a standard support term that applies to all devices. A particular duration should therefore be based on the manufacturer’s statement for that product, not inferred from the product category or from another manufacturer’s policy.

Compare devices by consequences, not only by category

When choosing among devices, compare the security information and the job the device will do. A phone managed by an employer, a personally owned phone, and a connected appliance have different owners and management contexts. Likewise, a device with access to more sensitive data or important systems deserves closer scrutiny than one with limited access. The comparison should reflect the actual product and service rather than an assumption that one category is inherently secure.

What to compare Questions to answer
Device and ownership Is this a phone or IoT device? Is it personal, organization-owned, or organization-managed?
Security capabilities and information What security functions and customer guidance does the manufacturer describe for this device?
Maintenance and support What support does the manufacturer state, and for how long? If no period is stated, mark it as unknown and seek clarification.
Data and system access What data does the device or service handle, and what other accounts or systems can it reach?
Responsibility Which controls belong to the user or administrator, manufacturer, service provider, and telecom operator?

This framework does not certify a device or predict whether a specific product will be secure. It helps expose missing information and clarifies whether the device’s stated support and access are appropriate for its intended use.

Manage mobile devices for their ownership and use context

Mobile device security is a lifecycle issue: deployment, use, and disposal all matter. NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2, published May 17, 2023, addresses enterprise mobile-device security and management. It covers organization-provided and personally owned devices in enterprise contexts. It is guidance and strategies for organizations, not a mandate for a particular consumer setting or a universal personal-device checklist.

If an organization manages the device

Ask the organization’s administrator which management rules apply, what support is available, and what happens when the device is replaced or the person’s access ends. For a personally owned device used for work, clarify how organizational management applies to that device and what the organization can manage. Do not assume that a personal device and an organization-owned device have identical administration or disposal arrangements.

If you manage the device personally

Use the product’s documentation to understand its security and maintenance functions, and keep track of whether it remains within the manufacturer’s stated support lifecycle. If the device is part of a service with an account or app, include those components in your review: device security alone does not answer how the broader service is managed. Where you cannot determine who handles a control, ask the manufacturer or service provider instead of treating the uncertainty as proof that the control exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan for replacement and disposal

Disposal is part of lifecycle management, not an afterthought. Before a managed device is returned, replaced, or retired, follow the organization’s process. For a personally managed device, consult the manufacturer’s instructions for removing it from the service and preparing it for transfer or disposal. Also consider the associated account and app: retiring the physical endpoint does not by itself explain what happens to service access or data held elsewhere. NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2 includes disposal within its enterprise mobile-device lifecycle coverage; the exact procedure depends on the device and management context.

Ask the service provider what it secures

IoT security is not solely a device-owner responsibility. GSMA’s IoT guidance describes security across secure design, development, deployment, and the service lifecycle, and identifies service providers, manufacturers, developers, and network operators among its intended audiences. That shared model is useful when deciding whom to ask about a control, but it does not mean every party operates every control.

Read the service provider’s security and privacy documentation, then ask specific questions if the division of responsibility is not clear:

  • Which parts of the service does the provider operate, and which parts must the device owner or administrator maintain?
  • What security and privacy information is available for the service, including its app or cloud components?
  • Which party should be contacted about a device issue, an account issue, or a network or service issue?
  • What does the provider say about the service’s maintenance and lifecycle?
  • Does the provider describe how the AI feature fits into the service and which party is responsible for securing that feature?

Use the provider’s answers to fill in the responsibility map, not as a substitute for the manufacturer’s device information. If a provider cannot explain which controls it handles, do not infer that the telecom network covers the uncertainty. A service running over a telecom connection is not, on that fact alone, evidence that the device, app, cloud service, or AI feature has been independently secured.

Separate AI security in telecom from device-owner security

AI security in telecom involves operator-side responsibilities as well as device and service responsibilities. GSMA’s document library lists Artificial Intelligence Security Guidelines (FS.49) as guidance on AI-related risks and mitigations operators should implement to run AI applications securely. The listing marks the document members-only. The available description does not provide a consumer procedure, assurance for a particular AI service, or a product recommendation.

That distinction sets a useful boundary for consumers and organizations: operator guidance concerns how operators secure AI applications they run; it does not tell an individual whether a particular connected device is supported, what its manufacturer maintains, or what the service provider handles. Ask the provider about the specific service rather than assuming that operator-side AI guidance automatically covers every component or use case.

Questions to ask before relying on an AI-enabled feature

  • Which organization operates the AI-enabled part of the service?
  • What does the provider say about the feature’s security and privacy, and which controls remain with the device owner or administrator?
  • Does the feature rely on an app, cloud service, or other connected system in addition to the device and telecom network?
  • Where can you get support if the AI feature or the wider service behaves unexpectedly?

These are clarification questions, not a claim that every provider publishes the same level of detail or that the answers constitute an independent security assessment. The evidence available here does not establish a universal AI-service assurance label or a consumer checklist for evaluating every AI-powered telecom service.

Use the right guidance for the decision you are making

Publication Published or revised What it covers How to apply it here
NIST SP 800-213, IoT Device Cybersecurity Guidance for the Federal Government November 2021 IoT device cybersecurity for federal government acquisition and system integration Use its system-oriented framing to consider device requirements and integration; do not present it as a consumer checklist.
NIST IR 8259 Rev. 1, Foundational Cybersecurity Activities for IoT Product Manufacturers Revised April 2026; supersedes the 2020 edition Manufacturer activities that improve product securability and provide cybersecurity information to customers, including pre-sale activities Use it to guide questions about product security capabilities, customer information, maintenance, and support.
NIST SP 800-124 Rev. 2, on enterprise mobile-device security May 17, 2023 Enterprise mobile-device management across deployment, use, and disposal, including organization-provided and personally owned scenarios Use it to distinguish device-management needs by ownership and organizational context; do not treat it as a personal-device mandate.
NIST IR 8228 Not stated here Broader IoT risk context, including that IoT risks can differ from conventional IT risks and include privacy risk Use the risk framing to consider device and service impacts across the lifecycle, not only conventional IT concerns.
GSMA Artificial Intelligence Security Guidelines (FS.49) Not stated here Operator mitigations for risks related to AI technology and secure operation of AI applications; the catalog listing is members-only Understand that operator-side AI security is a separate responsibility; the listing does not establish a consumer procedure or service-specific assurance.

These publications are not interchangeable. NIST SP 800-213 addresses federal government systems, SP 800-124 Rev. 2 addresses enterprise mobile-device management, and IR 8259 Rev. 1 addresses manufacturer activities. NIST IR 8228 supplies broader IoT risk context. GSMA’s AI guideline listing describes operator-side work but does not establish what a given provider or AI feature does.

Turn the review into a practical decision

Before connecting a new device

  1. Map the endpoint, app or cloud service, provider, and network it will use.
  2. Read the manufacturer’s security and customer information for the exact product.
  3. Find the stated maintenance and security-support expectations; ask if they are not clear.
  4. Consider the data and system access the device will receive in its intended role.
  5. Ask the provider which controls it runs and which remain with you or your organization.

For a device already in use

  1. Confirm who owns and manages the device and which organization administers its associated service.
  2. Locate the current manufacturer and provider information, then check whether support and maintenance are described for your device and service.
  3. Resolve unclear responsibility boundaries with the manufacturer, provider, or organizational administrator.
  4. Include service accounts and associated apps when reviewing a device, replacing it, or ending its use.

These steps help identify what is known, who is accountable for a control, and where information is missing. They are not a guarantee of security or a substitute for a product-specific assessment where the consequences of failure are high.
