Keep long-lived brokerage credentials on a protected server, give each key only the permissions its strategy needs, and use the broker’s documented token and network controls where available. Then make revocation, activity review, and safe replacement part of the app’s operating procedure. No single setting secures an automated trading system: broker capabilities differ, and a valid key can still authorize a faulty strategy to place harmful orders.
1. Create credentials deliberately and limit their permissions
-
Use the broker’s official enrollment process
Create API credentials through the broker’s official console or documented process. If the broker provides separate development, test, or QA and production environments, use distinct credentials for them. FINRA documents separate QA and production environments; do not assume another broker offers the same separation.

-
Give each key a clear purpose and minimum scope
Name credentials for the application, environment, and purpose so an operator can identify them during review or an incident. Grant only the account access and actions the strategy requires. For example, a strategy that reads account data and places orders should not receive unrelated capabilities if the broker offers granular permissions. Disable withdrawals if the API exposes that permission and the app does not need it. OKX’s API agreement recommends limiting key permissions; check the selected broker’s documentation to understand its specific scopes.

2. Keep long-lived secrets out of the app’s exposed surfaces
Do not embed a broker secret in a browser bundle, mobile app, notebook, source repository, container image, CI output, crash report, or application log. Client-side code and distributed artifacts can be inspected; a secret placed there is not protected merely because the interface is private or the repository is private.

Instead, retrieve the credential at runtime from a server-side secrets manager or protected deployment-secret mechanism. Allow only the process that needs it to read it, restrict and audit human access, and redact secret values and authorization headers from logs. FINRA’s terms require secure credential handling, while OKX’s API agreement specifically calls for encrypted storage and prohibits plaintext secrets in repositories or logs. Encryption is only one part of the control: the running application must use the secret, so deployment security, access control, monitoring, and incident response still matter.
3. Restrict where the key can be used, if the broker supports it
If the broker offers IP allowlisting, limit the key to the app’s known outbound address where practical. Keep egress stable, and document how a cloud, VPS, or network change will be reflected in the broker’s allowlist. OKX recommends allowlisting where available.

- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Requirements can also be specific to a provider and jurisdiction. Zerodha documents a static-IP requirement for API-based order placement in the context of India’s NSE/SEBI algorithmic-trading rules, and notes that a static IP may come from an ISP, cloud, or VPS provider. That example is not a universal rule for brokerage APIs; confirm the current requirement with the broker and applicable regulator.

4. Use the broker’s documented token lifecycle
Where a broker supports OAuth or another short-lived access-token flow, follow its documented process rather than sending a long-lived secret with every API request. FINRA’s API platform documents a client-credentials OAuth 2.0 flow: the client exchanges its client ID and secret for an access token, then sends the token as a bearer token. FINRA advises using the returned expires_in value to schedule renewal and describes caching the token for 30 minutes before regenerating it. Those implementation details apply to FINRA’s API; grant types, expiry periods, refresh behavior, and renewal requirements differ among providers.

“OAuth 2.0 enhances security by replacing the use of long-lasting credentials with limited life span tokens, reducing the potential of exposing an API Credential.”

5. Make revocation and replacement an operational procedure
Document how an operator can disable a key and issue a replacement without changing application code. When exposure is suspected, use the broker’s official controls to revoke or disable the credential, create a replacement with the minimum necessary scope, update the protected secret store, and deploy the change safely. Review account access and order activity for anything unexpected. Do not paste credentials into chat or incident tickets. OKX’s API agreement calls for prompt rotation after suspected or confirmed compromise; the available controls and timing are broker-specific.

6. Treat credential controls as one layer of trading risk management
Credential security does not stop an authorized but defective algorithm from sending damaging orders. Test strategy and deployment changes before production, monitor relevant logs and order activity, and keep technical, compliance, and operational owners aligned.
For FINRA member firms, FINRA’s algorithmic-trading guidance discusses risk assessment, supervision, communication between compliance and strategy-development staff, and software development, testing, and implementation. It notes that applicable SEC and FINRA rules include Rule 3110 on supervision. A firm should confirm its specific obligations with its compliance and legal teams; this guide does not determine whether a particular rule applies to an individual firm.

7. Avoid casual third-party credential sharing
Do not copy a long-lived broker credential into a vendor’s environment unless the broker’s terms and your organization’s controls permit that arrangement. FINRA’s terms place responsibility for credential use on the developer and limit sharing to authorized service providers under the terms. FINRA also documents an On Behalf Of workflow that lets authorized vendors act for member firms without the firms sharing credentials. That facility is FINRA-specific, but the general design preference is to use a broker-supported delegated-authorization mechanism instead of handing a vendor the user’s long-lived secret.
What to check when comparing brokerage APIs
Before choosing an API for an automated strategy, verify these controls in the broker’s current official documentation rather than assuming they work alike:
- Permission granularity: Can a key be restricted by account, endpoint, or trading action? Can withdrawal access be disabled?
- Network restrictions: Is IP allowlisting available, and is it compatible with the app’s deployment and outbound-network setup?
- Authentication lifecycle: Does the API support OAuth or short-lived tokens? What are the token expiry, renewal or reissue, and revocation procedures?
- Environment separation: Are sandbox, QA, and production systems and credentials distinct?
- Incident response: How are keys disabled and replacements issued, and what account or order activity can operators review?
- Delegated access: Does the broker support a third-party authorization model that avoids sharing the user’s long-lived secret?
These are evaluation questions, not a ranking: the cited platform materials provide examples of controls, not a complete survey of brokerage APIs. Broker terms and implementation details can change, so confirm current requirements with the provider.
