A hardware wallet can keep private-key operations away from an internet-connected computer, but it cannot protect Bitcoin if someone steals your recovery phrase, tricks you into approving a transaction, or compromises your setup. Initialize the device yourself, keep its backup private and recoverable, and confirm addresses and transaction details on the device screen before you approve anything.
What a hardware wallet protects—and what it does not
A hardware wallet stores or uses the keys needed to authorize Bitcoin transactions while limiting their exposure to an internet-connected computer. The companion app may prepare transactions, but the device is where you should verify the details and approve them.

It is not a guarantee against loss. Phishing, malicious approvals, physical theft or coercion, and mistakes with the recovery backup remain risks. Bitcoin.org describes hardware wallets as “the best balance between very high security and ease of use” in its wallet security guidance; that is a general recommendation, not a promise that every device or setup is equally secure.

Buy through an authorized channel
Obtain the wallet from its manufacturer or an authorized reseller, and follow that manufacturer’s current authenticity checks. For example, Trezor says devices bought from its shop, Amazon storefront, or an authorized reseller are most likely safe and warns against unauthorized third parties. That advice applies to Trezor; check the selected brand’s own seller list and verification procedure. See Trezor’s device-authenticity guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
Initialize it yourself
Use the official setup process to create your PIN and wallet backup. Do not use a device that arrives with a preconfigured PIN or recovery phrase, and never accept recovery words supplied by a seller or another person. If packaging looks tampered with or the device’s authenticity check fails, stop and contact the manufacturer through its official support channel.
Make a recovery backup you can protect and use
The terms “recovery phrase,” “wallet backup,” and “seed phrase” often refer to the device-generated recovery words, but formats and procedures vary by manufacturer and model. These words can restore access to the associated wallet. Anyone who obtains them may be able to access its funds; if the device is unavailable and you have lost the backup, you may be unable to recover the wallet.

Record the backup exactly as instructed
Write down the words in the order and format shown during setup. Check that the copy is legible and complete using the device’s supported verification process. Do not assume every wallet uses the same word count: Trezor documents BIP39 backups of 12 or 24 words and SLIP39 backups of 20 words for supported devices. Use the documentation for your exact model and backup type; Trezor explains its wallet backup formats.
Keep it offline, private, and recoverable
- Do not photograph the words or save them in email, cloud storage, a notes app, or another digital location.
- Never type the backup into a computer or phone or send it to anyone. Trezor’s instruction is: “Never enter your wallet backup anywhere unless prompted by your Trezor device.” Follow your own manufacturer’s official recovery and verification procedure. See Trezor’s wallet-backup instructions.
- Protect the physical copy from discovery, theft, fire, water, and accidental loss. A metal backup may improve durability for some users, but it does not make the words secret: anyone who finds a readable copy may be able to use it. Check that a product supports your backup format before using it.
- More than one secure physical location can reduce the risk of a single accident destroying the only copy, as Bitcoin.org notes, but extra copies also create extra places an attacker could find. Choose based on your circumstances, and keep every copy secure.
Decide whether a passphrase fits your recovery plan
A passphrase is not just another PIN. Trezor describes it as an additional string combined with the wallet backup to derive a distinct wallet. The exact string matters: a forgotten or mistyped passphrase can leave that wallet inaccessible, even if you still have the recovery words. The feature is optional. If you use it, document a secure recovery plan and test the supported recovery procedure before moving significant funds. See Trezor’s explanation of passphrases and hidden wallets.

Verify receiving addresses and outgoing payments on the device
Before sharing a receiving address
- Generate or open the receiving address in the wallet’s companion app.
- Check that the address shown in the app matches the address displayed on the hardware wallet itself.
- Share the address only after confirming it on the device. A compromised computer can replace the address shown on its screen. Trezor advises: “To be sure, always check the receiving address on your Trezor device screen.” See Trezor’s guidance on wallet security threats.
Before approving a payment
Read the destination address and other transaction details on the hardware wallet’s display before approving. Do not rely on the computer or phone screen alone: an internet-connected display can be tampered with. Ledger calls signing without understanding the details displayed by the device “blind signing”; its clear-signing guidance explains why reviewing what you approve matters. If the device’s details do not match the payment you intended, reject it.
Keep recovery possible as software and circumstances change
Install wallet and firmware updates through the manufacturer’s official procedures; updates can include security and stability fixes. Trezor warns that a firmware update can sometimes wipe a device, so make sure you can access your wallet backup before updating. Do not enter recovery words in response to unsolicited support messages, emails, pop-ups, or websites. Trezor’s backup guidance covers when a backup may be requested during an official device process.

Choose a setup that matches your needs and risk
When selecting a device, compare the exact model’s Bitcoin features and supported address types, how clearly it displays addresses and transaction details, its backup format and recovery process, its authenticity checks and update procedure, and whether its PIN and recovery steps are practical for you. Address compatibility can matter: check that the exchange or person sending you Bitcoin supports the address format you plan to use. Bitcoin.org’s wallet listings discuss wallet compatibility and selection.
For larger holdings, consider whether one device and one location are an acceptable point of failure. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small everyday amounts on a computer or phone and holding the remainder in a safer environment. Multisignature can require multiple independent approvals, reducing reliance on one device or location, but it adds setup and recovery complexity. Use it only if you can configure and test the arrangement before relying on it. No general device ranking can replace checking the documentation and procedures for the specific model you choose.
