To secure an x402 payment flow, bind each payment authorization or proof to the advertised payment requirements, enforce the payment method’s single-use replay protection, and atomically deduplicate claims and settlement across all server workers. Check payment before running the protected resource handler. Also decide explicitly whether settlement happens before or after that handler: x402 schemes use different orderings, and a successful payment does not guarantee that the client received the resource response.
Start with the scheme’s payment order
An x402 exchange typically begins with a resource request. The server responds with 402 Payment Required; the client selects a payment requirement, creates a payment payload, and resubmits it in the payment header. The resource server or a facilitator verifies or settles the payment, the resource handler runs according to the scheme’s ordering, and the server returns the resource and settlement response.

The exact order is scheme-, transfer-method-, and network-dependent. The x402 v2 specification describes three orderings:

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall| Ordering | Sequence | What it means for the handler |
|---|---|---|
authorization |
Verify → resource → settle → respond | Verification is read-only; funds move only after the resource executes successfully. |
upfront |
Settle → resource → respond | Payment commits before the handler. The server gets settlement finality first, but the client may be charged even if the handler fails. |
escrow |
Settle → resource → settle → respond | An initial settlement commits a deposit or ceiling; a later settlement records the final charge. |
The v2 invariant is that a verify or settle check runs before the resource executes: “The resource never executes with nothing checked.” The exact scheme defaults to authorization and says to prefer it when the transfer method permits. upfront can be useful when handler execution might outlast a validity or replay bound. Do not assume that one ordering or replay key applies to every x402 integration.

Bind the payment to the requested terms
A valid signature or proof that funds moved does not, by itself, show that the proof was intended for this resource request or that it has not already been used. If multiple resource servers share a payee, an unbound proof could be presented against a different server. The exact scheme calls for binding payment to the requirements through a unique instrument, a server-issued nonce, a payer signature over the requirements, or a payee commitment embedded in the instrument.
- Validate the submitted payment against the requirements advertised for this request, including the scheme and network.
- Reject a proof that is invalid, outside its validity window, already consumed, or not bound to the requested terms.
- Do not treat signature validation alone as replay protection; enforce the transfer method’s actual single-use primitive.
Make replay prevention atomic
Enforce the network’s single-use primitive
Use the selected network and transfer method’s replay mechanism, and confirm that its scope and concurrency behavior match the application’s needs. For example, the x402 v1 specification describes an EIP-3009 authorization with a 32-byte random nonce, a validity window, a payer signature, and contract-level prevention of nonce reuse. In the v2 exact scheme, consuming the replay primitive must make settlement fail: “A consumed primitive MUST produce a settlement failure, never a success.” These are scheme-specific details, not a universal x402 nonce format.

Claim client-submitted proofs before running the handler
For client-submitted proofs, the v2 exact scheme requires concurrent presentations of the same payment to produce at most one successful claim. Its canonical consumption key combines the CAIP-2 network identifier with that network’s canonical payment identifier. Claim that key atomically before executing the protected handler, and retain the consumed-proof record for as long as the proof remains presentable.

Chain-level double-spend prevention can stop duplicate token movement without stopping two API requests from both appearing successful or unlocking a resource. When a repeated settlement is indistinguishable from the original, the exact scheme requires atomic deduplication across every process serving /settle. Retain the deduplication key until the payment can no longer land.

Keep the state shared across instances: a process-local lock or cache cannot coordinate workers that receive the same submission concurrently. The deduplication identity should come from the scheme’s canonical payment identity, not from an assumed universal x402 identifier.
Handle retries without confusing payment steps
The v2 specification distinguishes read-only /verify from state-committing /settle. Escrow flows can settle more than once, so a single deduplication key based only on payment identity could suppress a legitimate later settlement. For a scheme with multiple settlement steps, include the scheme-defined step identity in the deduplication decision.

The available specification does not establish one universal idempotency-key response contract for every scheme. Therefore, define retry behavior for the specific facilitator, scheme, and network rather than assuming repeated verify or settle calls always return the original result.
Account for network-specific races
Exact on SVM
The exact-SVM guidance describes a race in which the same transaction is sent to /settle multiple times before on-chain confirmation. Each caller can receive success even though Solana executes the transfer once; duplicate API successes could therefore unlock more than one resource for one payment.

That guidance recommends a short-lived in-flight cache keyed by the transaction payload and rejecting duplicate submissions with duplicate_settlement. It gives 120 seconds as an eviction example tied to its stated approximate blockhash lifetime. Treat that interval as SVM-specific guidance, not a general x402 timeout or retention period; derive the actual horizon from the network and payment method in use.
Separate duplicate rejection from response recovery
Preventing a payment from being processed twice and returning the original resource after a lost response are different problems. In SVM batch settlement, reuse of a running or completed (channelId, requestId) returns duplicate_settlement; the handler does not run again, and the original response or resource body is not replayed. A transport retry requires a new request ID. The documented payment identifier extension is the option for response recovery.
Design the API’s lost-response behavior separately from payment idempotency. If the client loses the response after settlement, deduplication can prevent a second charge or handler execution without recovering the body the client expected.

- Ordering: Confirm whether the chosen scheme uses authorization, upfront settlement, or escrow, and make the handler’s position explicit.
- Binding: Check that each authorization or proof is tied to the advertised payment requirements, resource, scheme, and network as required by the payment method.
- Replay: Identify the network’s single-use primitive, its validity rules, and the point at which consumption becomes final.
- Concurrency: Verify that simultaneous submissions can claim a payment only once, including across separate server processes.
- Settlement retries: Deduplicate across all settlement workers, preserve state until the payment can no longer land, and distinguish legitimate escrow steps.
- Response recovery: Specify what a client should do after a lost response, and whether the API can recover the original resource independently of duplicate-payment rejection.
Check the exact scheme and network binding used by your implementation: x402 v2’s flow order and replay mechanics vary, while the EIP-3009 nonce example and SVM cache guidance apply only to their stated contexts.
