How to Secure an SSH Client: Host Keys, Passphrases, and Agent Forwarding

Verify SSH server fingerprints before trusting them, protect private keys with passphrases, and avoid forwarding your agent when ProxyJump can do the job.

Secure an SSH client by verifying server host keys before trusting them, protecting private-key files with strong passphrases, and leaving agent forwarding off unless a specific trusted workflow requires it. For a jump host, prefer ProxyJump when it works: it routes the connection without generally exposing your local agent to the intermediary.

Should you accept a new SSH host key?

Only after verifying that the fingerprint belongs to the server you intended to reach. A host key authenticates the server to your client; it is different from your user key, which authenticates you to the server. OpenSSH records host identities in ~/.ssh/known_hosts and can warn when a host key is unknown or has changed. See the OpenSSH ssh_config(5) manual for how StrictHostKeyChecking governs these cases.

  1. When connecting to a server for the first time, compare the displayed fingerprint with one obtained through an independently trusted channel, such as an administrator-managed inventory or the server console.
  2. Accept the key only when the fingerprint matches. If you cannot verify it, stop rather than treating the prompt as a routine first-use click-through.
  3. If SSH reports that a known host key changed, pause and confirm whether a planned rebuild, key rotation, or hostname reuse explains it. Have the administrator verify the new fingerprint through a trusted channel before updating your record.

Do not routinely disable strict checking or erase a changed-key warning just to make a connection succeed. A warning can indicate a legitimate server change, but it can also mean you are reaching a different endpoint than expected.

What about automatic host-key updates?

OpenSSH documents UpdateHostKeys as enabled by default only under certain conditions, including configuration of the user known-hosts file and use of VerifyHostKeyDNS. The behavior depends on the installed version and effective configuration; do not assume it will automatically manage every host-key change. Check the current upstream configuration manual and your local SSH configuration.

What does an SSH key passphrase protect?

A passphrase encrypts the private-key file while it is stored. It is not the same as the password for your remote account. Use a strong, unique passphrase and restrict the private-key file so only your local account can read it.

With ssh-agent, you can unlock a key once and have the agent perform signing operations without exposing the private-key file to every SSH command. That is more convenient, but it shifts part of the trust boundary to your local account, the agent process, and access to the agent socket. Load only the identities you need for the work at hand.

Mozilla’s OpenSSH guidance describes ssh-add -c for requesting confirmation when a key is used and ssh-add -t for limiting how long a key remains loaded. These options can reduce exposure, but a confirmation prompt is not a substitute for trusting the host requesting authentication. Check the behavior supported by your installed client and agent. Time-limited identities through AddKeysToAgent are also version-dependent; consult the relevant OpenBSD release notes and your platform’s documentation.

Is SSH agent forwarding safe?

Agent forwarding does not copy your private-key file to the remote machine. It does, however, make an agent socket available through the SSH session. A process on the remote host that can access that socket can ask your local agent to perform authentication operations with identities loaded there. If that host is compromised or untrusted, an attacker may be able to use those identities to authenticate onward while access remains available.

OpenSSH’s configuration manual sets ForwardAgent to no by default and advises caution when enabling it. Keep it off globally. If a particular workflow truly requires forwarding, limit it to a named, trusted host and end the session when finished. Damien Miller, author of OpenSSH’s explanation of agent restrictions, advises avoiding forwarding where possible and notes that the agent protocol historically offered little defence against this kind of misuse. Read the OpenSSH agent-restriction explanation alongside the configuration manual.

How can you use a jump host without forwarding your agent?

Use ProxyJump when it supports your route. It tells SSH to reach the final server through a jump host while keeping your agent local, rather than granting the intermediary access to the forwarded agent socket. Verify the host keys for both the jump host and the destination; the route does not replace endpoint verification.

Mozilla provides single- and multi-hop configuration examples in its OpenSSH guide. OpenSSH’s agent-restriction documentation also identifies ProxyJump as an alternative to forwarding an agent. If your workflow cannot use it and needs forwarding, apply the narrow, temporary configuration described above.

When are destination-constrained keys useful?

OpenSSH destination constraints can restrict where an agent-loaded identity may be used and which forwarding path is permitted. The restrictions are specified when adding an identity with ssh-add; OpenSSH checks host identities using host-key records in your local known_hosts database. This can add defense in depth, but it is not a universal safeguard: the participating agent, clients, and servers must support the required protocol extensions.

Which SSH authentication approach fits your workflow?

Approach What it does Security consideration
Private-key file with passphrase Protects the stored private key; unlock it directly or through an agent. Protect the file and use a unique passphrase.
Agent-loaded key Lets SSH use an unlocked identity without repeatedly entering its passphrase. The local agent process and socket access become part of the trust boundary.
Forwarded agent Allows onward SSH authentication from a remote session. The remote host can request operations with identities available through the forwarded socket.
ProxyJump Routes SSH through a jump host without generally exposing the local agent to it. Verify the host keys for the jump host and destination.
FIDO-backed key Uses a compatible physical authenticator for public-key authentication. Requires compatible hardware and software; it does not replace host-key checking.

OpenSSH documents security-key-backed public-key authentication, including authenticator-hosted Ed25519 keys; supported key types and availability depend on the OpenSSH version and platform. See the OpenBSD release notes for feature history. A hardware key is optional: it is not required to verify server host keys, protect a software key with a passphrase, or avoid forwarding an agent.
