How to Secure an SRS Server with a Firewall for YouTube Streaming

A practical least-exposure firewall plan for SRS relaying to YouTube, including RTMP and RTMPS rules, WebRTC differences, stream-key safety, and fixes for common connection failures.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an SRS relay that accepts an RTMP feed and forwards it to YouTube, expose only the configured publishing listener to the intended encoders, keep unused SRS API and playback services private, and allow outbound traffic to the RTMPS endpoint shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The usual SRS RTMP listener is TCP 1935, but your firewall must match the services and ports actually enabled in your SRS version and configuration.

Plan the firewall around the traffic you need

Separate the connections before creating rules: the encoder publishes inbound to SRS, and SRS sends the stream outbound to YouTube. Playback for viewers, management access, and WebRTC are separate requirements; none should be opened just because SRS supports them.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Inbound publishing: allow only the SRS listener and protocol your encoder uses. For typical RTMP ingest, SRS documents TCP 1935.
  • Outbound delivery: allow the SRS host to reach the actual RTMPS URL and port shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube troubleshooting guidance mentions port 443 when needed; do not substitute a sample hostname for your stream’s actual endpoint.
  • Management: use a trusted route such as a restricted private network or VPN. Do not use a public streaming listener as an administrative access path.
  • Playback: open an HTTP or HTTPS endpoint only if viewers are meant to receive playback directly from SRS.

These are least-exposure recommendations based on SRS’s documented service inventory, not universal defaults. Apply them in both the host firewall and any cloud security group, network ACL, or provider firewall in front of the host.

Which SRS ports should you allow?

SRS’s documentation lists these common service ports. They describe available services, not a checklist to open all at once. The exact listeners can vary with version and configuration; the v7 and v8 documentation pages used here label those versions unstable, so check the documentation and configuration matching your running release.

Port and transport Documented purpose Typical firewall treatment
TCP 1935 RTMP Allow inbound only when RTMP publishing is enabled; restrict source addresses to known encoders or a private network when practical.
TCP 1985 HTTP API and WebRTC-related services Keep inaccessible from the public internet unless a required service needs it; restrict access to intended clients.
TCP 8080 HTTP streaming, including HTTP-FLV/HLS-style services Leave closed unless SRS is serving playback to viewers; expose through the intended TLS and edge-proxy design where appropriate.
UDP 8000 WebRTC media default Allow only for a WebRTC deployment whose configured media path requires it.
TCP 8088 Optional HTTPS service Open only if the configured HTTPS service is needed and its access is appropriately controlled.

SRS also documents optional converter and signaling ports; their exact use depends on enabled features and configuration. Inspect the active configuration rather than guessing or opening extra ports. Source: SRS resource documentation.

Set up an RTMP-ingest, RTMPS-egress rule set

  1. Confirm the SRS listener. Check the active SRS configuration and startup logs to confirm RTMP is enabled, which address and port it binds to, and whether a container or network mapping changes the host-facing port. TCP 1935 is the documented usual RTMP port, not a guarantee for every deployment.
  2. Permit the encoder to reach SRS. Add an inbound TCP rule for the configured listener. Limit its source to the encoder’s known public address, VPN, or private network when your topology allows it. If publishers have changing addresses, use an approved private-access approach rather than leaving a management or API port open as a workaround.
  3. Copy YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and reveal the RTMPS URL. YouTube notes that the standard field may show ordinary RTMP by default. Use the URL displayed for your stream and its associated stream key; do not copy a hostname from an example or assume the endpoint is fixed. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
  4. Allow outbound delivery. Permit the SRS host to connect to the destination host and port in that current RTMPS URL, consistent with your organization’s egress policy. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to verify the rtmps scheme and try port 443 if needed. Port 443 is an egress troubleshooting option for the YouTube connection, not a required inbound SRS port. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot live stream issues.
  5. Keep unrelated listeners closed. Unless needed for a deliberate API, playback, or WebRTC use, do not expose TCP 1985, TCP 8080, or UDP 8000 publicly. If a service is needed, allow access only from its intended clients and apply the deployment’s TLS, proxy, and authentication controls as appropriate.
  6. Verify the whole path. Publish from the intended encoder to SRS, confirm SRS reaches the YouTube stream, and test any deliberately enabled viewer route. Check host and cloud firewall logs when a connection fails; validate the actual deployed route rather than assuming a rule worked.

Handle RTMPS at the SRS edge separately

If publishers connect to SRS over RTMPS, that is a different connection from SRS’s outbound RTMPS connection to YouTube. SRS v7 documentation describes TLS certificates and a separately configured RTMPS listener. Its example configuration uses port 1443 as an example listener value; it is not a YouTube port requirement. Configure the listener you actually intend to use, then allow only that inbound port from intended publishers. YouTube’s example of port 443 concerns its outbound ingest troubleshooting, not the SRS edge listener. SRS RTMP documentation.

Treat WebRTC as a separate firewall design

Allowing TCP 1935 is not enough for WebRTC. SRS separates signaling from media; its documentation identifies UDP 8000 as the media default and describes TCP transport as an option where UDP is unavailable. The needed rules depend on configured signaling, media transport, and the candidate address advertised to clients.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the active SRS WebRTC configuration and candidate address before writing rules.
  • Allow the configured signaling path to the intended clients, not broadly by default.
  • Allow the configured UDP media path, or the configured TCP alternative if that is what the deployment uses.
  • Test from the actual client network. NAT, incorrect candidate addresses, and firewall restrictions can prevent media from connecting even when signaling appears to work.

See SRS WebRTC documentation for the separate signaling and media behavior and configuration details.

Open playback ports only when SRS serves viewers

If viewers consume HLS or HTTP-FLV directly from SRS, the relevant HTTP or HTTPS listener must be reachable to those viewers. SRS documents TCP 8080 for HTTP streaming and TCP 8088 for an optional HTTPS service. Choose the listener and edge design deliberately; an SRS-to-YouTube relay does not, by itself, require a public SRS playback endpoint. Keep API access separate from playback access and restrict it to the clients that need it.

Protect the YouTube stream key

YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. A firewall does not make a leaked key safe: someone with the key may be able to send a feed to the stream. Store it as a credential, avoid including it in public configuration examples, screenshots, logs, source control, or unprotected support requests, and limit access to the configuration that contains it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room; YouTube says owner or manager access is required. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as a secure extension to RTMP. That protects the YouTube-facing connection in transit; it does not secure the SRS host, its management/API listener, or any other unencrypted connection in the deployment. YouTube Help: encoder settings.

Troubleshoot common firewall failures

Symptom What to check Likely correction
The publisher cannot connect to SRS Confirm RTMP or RTMPS is enabled, the configured bind port matches the rule, container/network mappings are correct, and the source can reach the listener. Allow the configured inbound listener from the intended source. TCP 1935 is the documented usual RTMP port, but the deployment may use another configured port.
SRS cannot reach YouTube Compare the destination with the current URL in Live Control Room; verify the URL uses rtmps, the outbound destination port is allowed, and the software handling the upstream connection supports TLS. Correct the URL or egress rule. YouTube says to try specifying port 443 if needed.
WebRTC fails while RTMP works Check the candidate address and separate signaling and media paths, including UDP/TCP restrictions. Match firewall rules to the configured WebRTC transport and reachable candidate. RTMP success does not prove WebRTC media can pass.
An unexpected API or playback service is public Review active SRS services, host rules, and cloud network rules against the ports actually in use. Disable unneeded services or restrict their access to intended clients.
An unauthorized feed appears or the key may be exposed Review who can access the stored key and whether it appeared in logs, screenshots, or shared configuration. Reset the stream key through Live Control Room and secure the configuration holding the replacement.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is simply to keep uploaded videos live on YouTube, StreamNeo is a hosted alternative rather than an SRS firewall configuration: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS, or home connection staying on. It streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded video to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free first day.
