Set up accountable access before adding staff
Name an account owner and a backup administrator, and keep a current record of who is responsible for access and recovery. Give each staff member an individual X Delegate or X Pro Teams role rather than distributing the account password.

Choose the X access method your team uses
X Delegate is available on x.com and X Pro; invitations are enabled and sent on x.com. Owners invite people as admins or contributors, and owners and admins can manage delegates. Admins can invite others and view post analytics; contributors can act for the account but cannot manage delegated accounts. The owner alone controls the account password, phone number, and login-verification settings.

Owners and admins manage the team; contributors cannot. Only the owner manages the password, phone number, and login-verification settings. X documents a maximum of 200 team members, which is a feature limit—not a recommended team size. X says account owners are responsible for content posted by authorized admins and contributors, so assign elevated roles only to people who need them.

Add a passkey where the account supports it
X documents passkeys for iOS and Android and describes them as optional, though encouraged. In the X app, open Settings and privacy → Security and account access → Security → Passkey. Follow the on-screen instructions to register one.
A passkey is a WebAuthn public-key credential: X stores the public key, while the private key remains on the device. That design changes how you sign in, but it does not remove the need to protect the account’s recovery options, email, and delegated access.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
Enable two-factor authentication and pick a maintainable method
X lists text message, authentication app, and security key as two-factor authentication (2FA) methods. A TOTP authenticator app or physical security key can avoid dependence on SMS availability. X does not endorse a particular app or key brand; choose a method the account owner can maintain, recover, and replace safely.
| Method | What X documents | What to consider for an organization |
|---|---|---|
| Authentication app | X lists authentication apps as a 2FA option. | Choose how the owner will retain access if the enrolled device is lost or replaced. X’s cited guidance does not compare app vendors. |
| Security key | X supports keys using USB, Bluetooth, or NFC and says multiple keys can be added. | Keep a controlled spare if appropriate, and check the key’s connection type against the owner’s devices. X’s cited guidance does not compare key models. |
| Text message | X says SMS 2FA stopped being supported for non-Premium subscribers effective March 20, 2023. Premium availability varies by country and carrier. | Do not make SMS the only plan unless it is currently available to the account and the organization can maintain the associated phone number. |
To configure a method, open X’s account security settings and follow the current 2FA prompts. The exact available choices may depend on account eligibility and location; check the live account rather than assuming SMS is available.

Protect the password, email, and recovery route
- Use a unique, strong X password and store it in password-management software, as X recommends. Do not reuse it for staff or other services.
- Secure the email account associated with X, including its own sign-in and recovery methods. Email may be involved in account recovery.
- Generate X backup codes and store them in a controlled, secure location accessible to the appropriate owner or recovery contact. X says backup codes can help if a phone is lost.
- Do not confuse backup codes with temporary passwords used by third-party clients; they serve different purposes.
X also offers password-reset protection. Review the available controls in the account’s security settings and use them consistently with the organization’s recovery plan.
Reduce risk from links, connected apps, and stale access
- Check that you are on x.com before entering credentials, and be cautious with messages or pages asking you to sign in.
- Avoid giving the account password to third-party services. Review authorized app permissions and revoke access for apps the organization no longer needs.
- Review login alerts and the list of delegated users or X Pro team members regularly. Remove access promptly when someone changes roles or leaves.
If you suspect unauthorized access
- Change the X password and secure the associated email account.
- Review and revoke unfamiliar or unnecessary connected apps.
- Check delegated users and X Pro team membership; remove anyone who should not have access.
- Review login and recovery settings while you still have an active session, and update the organization’s access record.
Make recovery and offboarding part of the routine
Keep a current, restricted record of the owner, admins, contributors, recovery contacts, enrolled 2FA methods, backup-code location, and connected apps. Review it when staff responsibilities change and remove access that is no longer needed. While the owner still has a working session, confirm that the organization knows where its backup codes are and who can act if the primary device is unavailable.
