Set the stream’s visibility to Private if only selected people should be able to watch. Unlisted is not access control: anyone who gets its link can watch and share it. Then secure the Google Account behind the channel, give collaborators individual channel permissions instead of your password, and reset the stream key if it may have been exposed.
Choose the right visibility setting
Visibility determines who can watch the stream or its replay. Set it for the broadcast before going live, then check the replay’s setting after the stream ends; do not assume the archive has the restriction you intended.

Use Private when the audience must be limited to people you select. Use Unlisted only when convenient link sharing is more important than controlling who can access the stream. YouTube’s guidance on video privacy settings explains these visibility options.
Set up the stream with restricted access
- Before creating or starting the broadcast, set its visibility to Private. In the stream setup in YouTube Studio, choose the Private visibility option and select the intended viewers. Check the setting on the stream itself, not just the channel’s general defaults.
- Preview the broadcast in Live Control Room. Confirm that the selected stream is the intended one and that its visibility is still Private before you start. Keep sensitive information out of the camera view, audio, and chat: a Private setting does not make accidental disclosure harmless.
- Check the replay after the broadcast. Verify the archive’s visibility before sharing or leaving it available. Change it to Private if it should remain restricted.
- Share access only with the intended viewers. For a Private video or replay, select the people who should be able to watch. Do not treat an unlisted URL as a substitute for selecting viewers.
YouTube’s live streaming guidance covers stream setup and management. Studio labels and available controls can change, so follow the current options shown for the stream.

Protect the Google Account that controls the channel
A Private stream cannot protect a channel whose Google Account has been taken over. Turn on 2-Step Verification for the Google Account associated with the channel, and consider adding a passkey. Google recommends a passkey as the second verification method for the strongest protection against threats such as phishing. A hardware security key is another sign-in factor; it protects account access, not stream visibility.
- Open your Google Account security settings.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification and follow the prompts to add a second sign-in method.
- Consider setting up a passkey or adding a compatible physical security key as a sign-in factor.
- Review the account’s security activity and recovery options so you can regain control if you lose access.
Google explains the available factors in its 2-Step Verification help. These account protections do not change an Unlisted stream into a Private one.

Give production teammates channel permissions, not your password
Invite each collaborator through YouTube Studio’s channel permissions and assign the least-privileged role that lets them do their work. Do not share the Google Account password or sign-in details. Remove access when someone’s work ends, and review the access list periodically.

- Choose the option to invite a user, enter their Google Account email address, and select an appropriate role.
- Review the people and roles listed in Permissions; remove anyone who no longer needs access.
Role capabilities differ. For example, YouTube says Editors cannot reset stream keys, while Owners and Managers can. Choose access based on the work required rather than giving everyone broad control. See YouTube channel permissions for role details and current controls.

Keep the stream key confidential and reset it if exposed
A stream key helps connect YouTube to the encoder sending the broadcast. Treat it like a secret: do not publish it, send it in an unsecured message, or leave it visible in a recording or screenshot. If someone may have obtained it, reset the key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder before the next broadcast.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Open the stream’s settings and use the control to reset or generate a new stream key.
- Copy the new key into the encoder’s stream settings, replacing the old saved key.
- Before going live, verify that the encoder is using the new key. Reusing saved stream settings can carry an old key forward.
Only channel Owners and Managers can reset a stream key. YouTube describes stream-key management in its Live Control Room help. If you cannot access the reset control, ask an Owner or Manager to do it; do not compensate by sharing account credentials.

If you suspect the channel is compromised
- Recover and secure the associated Google Account first. Use Google’s account recovery guidance if you cannot sign in, then update account security settings.
- Have other channel Owners and Managers secure their own accounts. A collaborator with administrative access can remain a route into the channel.
- Review channel permissions. Remove access that is not recognized or no longer needed.
- Inspect the stream and its key. Check active and scheduled streams, visibility, and saved encoder settings; reset a key if it may have been exposed.
- Review what viewers could have seen. Check the stream and replay settings, and address any private information that may have appeared on camera, in audio, or in chat.

Common access problems and fixes
- A viewer cannot open a Private stream. Confirm that the correct Google Account was selected for sharing and that the stream or replay is still Private. An unlisted link does not grant access to a Private video.
- Someone can watch an Unlisted stream after the link was forwarded. That is expected: anyone with the URL can watch and reshare it. Change the visibility to Private and select the intended viewers.
- The encoder no longer connects after a key reset. Replace the old key in the encoder with the new one, then verify which saved stream settings are selected before going live.
- You cannot find the key-reset option. Check that you have an Owner or Manager role; Editors cannot reset stream keys. Ask an Owner or Manager to perform the reset.
- You suspect account takeover. Recover and secure the Google Account first, secure other Owners’ and Managers’ accounts, then inspect channel permissions and stream settings.
