Windows’ WebDAV redirector runs through the WebClient service; keep that service enabled only if this PC needs WebDAV.
1. Connect to the server over HTTPS
Use the server’s HTTPS URL and the hostname covered by its TLS certificate. Microsoft warns that Basic authentication can transmit usernames and passwords in clear text; its WebDAV Redirector documentation says Basic authentication is disabled by default unless the connection uses SSL. Do not enable Basic authentication over an unencrypted connection as a workaround.

If Windows prompts you to select a certificate while mapping a drive, check whether the address you entered matches the name on the server certificate. Microsoft lists a name mismatch as a possible cause in its WebDAV troubleshooting guidance. Ask the server owner to correct the certificate or provide the correct hostname; do not bypass certificate validation.

2. Keep credential forwarding narrowly scoped
Windows’ WebDAV redirector uses WinHTTP. The AuthForwardServerList setting controls which matching servers may receive forwarded credentials; it is not a general fix for authentication failures. Microsoft advises keeping the list as restrictive as possible and warns that wildcard patterns can match more hosts than intended. See its guidance on WebDAV credential forwarding.

If credentials are not sent to an intranet fully qualified domain name, do not add a broad wildcard simply to make the connection work. Have an administrator determine whether a narrowly scoped exception is necessary and verify the applicable Windows version and policy environment before changing registry settings. Microsoft notes that registry configuration can override the redirector’s default behavior and strongly discourages enabling Basic authentication without SSL.
3. Restrict access on the server
Ask the server administrator to review who can use WebDAV and which paths they can access. For IIS, WebDAV authoring rules can specify users or groups, paths, and permissions, separately from ordinary URL authorization.

- Review whether anonymous listing or authoring is enabled for this deployment.
- For IIS, verify the WebDAV configuration’s
requireSslsetting rather than assuming an example value or default is appropriate. The IIS WebDAV authoring configuration reference documents this setting.
4. Decide whether this PC needs WebDAV
The Windows WebDAV client uses the WebClient service. If this PC does not need WebDAV, an administrator can consider disabling the service; WebDAV shares will then be inaccessible from that client. If WebDAV is needed for work, leave the service available and secure the connection and server permissions instead.

- Certificate selection prompt: Check whether the address hostname matches the server certificate, then ask the server owner to correct the name or certificate.
- Authentication failure: The server may lack the required authentication configuration, or the account may not have permission to the requested content. A failure alone is not a reason to broaden credential forwarding.
- Mapping failure: Check whether WebClient is running on the PC and whether WebDAV is enabled on the server.
- Registry or policy change proposed: Confirm the target Windows release and organizational policy before applying version-sensitive instructions.
