If you need to administer the router remotely, use a VPN such as WireGuard or a compatible Back To Home setup instead of exposing WinBox, SSH, or WebFig directly to the internet.
RouterOS configurations and interface names vary. Before changing rules, check the manual for your RouterOS release, back up the configuration, and make sure you have a working local or out-of-band way back in. The examples below explain the policy to build; they are not a tested, universal configuration.

Start with updates, credentials, and the existing firewall
MikroTik’s router security guide recommends upgrading RouterOS because older releases have had vulnerabilities fixed in later versions. Use a release supported for your device, and consult the current manual and release information before changing settings.
- Replace the default
adminusername where practical, and set a strong, unique password. Do not reuse a password from another account or device. - Keep the preconfigured firewall protection that blocks unsolicited connections arriving from the WAN. MikroTik cautions against removing those rules unless you are certain the connection remains secure.
- Make a configuration backup before edits. Keep your current management session open while testing a new access path, and verify that you can still administer the router before ending that session.
If you use Quick Set, MikroTik says to leave the “Firewall router” option selected so devices are not accessible through the internet-facing port. Quick Set configurations are not identical to custom firewall setups, so do not assume their rule placement or interface names apply to every router. See MikroTik’s Quick Set documentation.

Disable management services you do not use
RouterOS services can expose management interfaces such as Telnet, FTP, WebFig over HTTP or HTTPS, SSH, API or API-SSL, and WinBox. In IP > Services, review which services are enabled and turn off those your administration workflow does not require. Prefer disabling an unused service over merely changing its port: an obscure port does not make an internet-reachable service a safe one.
The service address setting can limit which source prefixes may connect, but MikroTik says this is best suited to trusted networks and recommends a firewall to block external or untrusted access. Use service-level restrictions as an additional boundary, not as a substitute for controlling reachability in the firewall. Details are in the RouterOS Services documentation.
If SSH is required, MikroTik documents the strong-crypto=yes option as an SSH hardening setting. Enabling it does not establish that every other cryptographic, account, or access setting is secure; review the rest of your configuration as well.

Reduce exposure from auxiliary features and local discovery
MikroTik’s security guide recommends reviewing features beyond the obvious remote-login services. Disable what your network does not need, but do not turn off functions on which clients or management tools depend.
- On production networks, consider disabling MAC-Telnet, MAC-WinBox, and MAC-Ping if they are not part of your recovery or administration process.
- Disable neighbor discovery on interfaces where you do not want the router advertised to nearby devices.
- Review bandwidth-server, proxy, SOCKS, UPnP, and cloud functions; disable unused ones.
- Set DNS remote requests off if the router should not accept DNS requests from clients. If the router is intentionally providing DNS forwarding, preserve the required behavior and restrict who can use it.
- Disable unused physical interfaces where doing so will not disrupt a required link.
These are review items, not a copy-and-paste checklist. The right choice depends on how the router serves the network.
Protect the router itself with an input-chain policy
RouterOS filtering separates traffic addressed to the router from traffic that merely passes through it. The input chain handles packets destined for the router; forward handles traffic passing through; and output handles traffic originating from the router. To limit remote access to the router’s own services, focus on the input policy—not just forward rules.
Plan IPv4 and IPv6 separately: RouterOS presents their filter rules in separate menus, and protection in one does not automatically establish the policy for the other. In each case, identify the trusted management sources and required services, then ensure untrusted WAN traffic cannot reach the router’s management plane.

| Policy approach | Security and operational trade-off |
|---|---|
| Allow specifically required traffic, then drop the rest | MikroTik describes this as more secure from a security perspective. It offers tighter control, but administrators must account for each service and legitimate traffic path. |
| Drop known malicious traffic, then allow the rest | Can require less up-front service planning, but leaves a broader set of traffic permitted than an allow-list policy. |
Do not paste a strict drop rule without first confirming the management path you intend to keep. A misplaced input-chain rule can lock you out. Build and test rules with a local or out-of-band recovery route available, and verify existing IPv4 and IPv6 behavior before closing the session.

Use a VPN for deliberate remote administration
MikroTik recommends securing intended remote access with a VPN such as WireGuard. The goal is to make management services reachable through a controlled tunnel rather than publishing WinBox, SSH, or WebFig broadly to the internet.
What a WireGuard firewall path needs
MikroTik’s WireGuard documentation illustrates two distinct firewall needs: allow the WireGuard UDP listener to reach the router through the input chain, and allow the VPN subnet to access router services that VPN clients actually need. These are separate permissions; opening the listener alone does not automatically grant clients access to management services.

The example also describes adding the WireGuard interface to the LAN interface list as an alternative. That can make existing LAN rules apply to VPN clients, but it may grant broader access than a narrowly scoped rule. Before using that shortcut, determine which router services and LAN resources VPN clients should reach, then allow only that scope. Exact ports, interface names, and rules depend on your configuration.

WireGuard and Back To Home compared
| Question | WireGuard configured in RouterOS | Back To Home |
|---|---|---|
| Device and release support | Check the current RouterOS WireGuard documentation and your device’s release. The cited material does not establish a single hardware or minimum-version requirement for every setup. | MikroTik documents support for RouterOS v7.12 or newer on ARM, ARM64, and TILE devices. Confirm current device compatibility before relying on it. |
| Reachability path | The firewall and network must permit the WireGuard UDP listener to reach the router; clients then connect through the tunnel. | MikroTik describes direct VPN connections when the router has a public IP, and relay-server use when it is not directly reachable. |
| Firewall scope | The documented example allows the listener and separately permits the VPN subnet to reach needed router services; an interface-list shortcut may be broader. | The overview notes that advanced RouterOS options can provide more granular security controls. Consult the current setup details for the device. |
| What becomes available | Choose which router services and, if required, LAN resources VPN clients can access. | Choose the intended router or network access using the feature’s current configuration options; verify the scope on the device. |
Neither option is universally better based on these criteria alone. Choose based on compatibility, reachability, the firewall scope you can maintain, and what remote users need to administer.
Review version-aware defenses without treating them as substitutes
RouterOS device-mode can limit access to configuration features. MikroTik says it is factory-preinstalled for RouterOS v7.17 and newer; older versions use advanced/enterprise mode. Check the device-mode documentation for the behavior and controls that apply to your release.
The allowed-versions list is described as an additional defense against stepwise downgrade to known vulnerable releases. MikroTik notes that this list is ignored if install-any-version is enabled. Device-mode does not replace current software, strong credentials, or a firewall policy that blocks unwanted management traffic.

Safe order for applying changes
- Back up first: save a configuration backup and note the RouterOS version, existing management access method, and required services.
- Secure the account and software: use a supported current release and strong, unique credentials; confirm the replacement administrative account works.
- Reduce service exposure: disable unneeded management services and auxiliary features, and restrict service access to trusted sources where appropriate.
- Plan the firewall: identify router-destined traffic in the input chain, separately account for IPv4 and IPv6, and decide which sources and services must remain reachable.
- Build the remote path: configure a VPN and its listener and client permissions deliberately, rather than making management services public.
- Test before ending the session: verify local administration and the VPN route from the intended remote network while a recovery path remains available.
