Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you suspect a zero-day attack on your Mac, treat the concern seriously—but do not assume that crashes, pop-ups, or battery drain prove an exploit. Start by checking whether Apple sent a threat notification, update supported Apple devices, and choose recovery steps according to your evidence and data needs. Apple’s threat-notification guidance concerns activity consistent with mercenary spyware, a highly targeted category; it cannot by itself establish who was responsible or certify that a Mac is clean.
First, separate a confirmed warning from a suspicion
An Apple Threat Notification is a concrete reason to act. Apple says it sends these notifications when it detects activity consistent with a mercenary spyware attack. A notification may appear on an iPhone Lock Screen or in Settings, arrive by email at addresses associated with your Apple Account, or appear as a banner after you sign in at account.apple.com. If you receive one, follow the tailored steps in the notification and Apple’s guidance. Apple does not attribute attacks or notifications to specific attackers or geographic regions.
If you have not received a notification, identify what evidence prompted your concern and avoid treating nonspecific behavior as a diagnosis. The guidance available here does not establish a symptom checklist that can identify a zero-day. Apple says most people will never be targeted by attacks of this nature; that general statement is not a reason to dismiss specific evidence you have.

Update the Mac and other Apple devices
Install the latest security updates available for your Mac and other Apple devices. Apple recommends updating to get the latest security fixes. The right release depends on your Mac model and installed operating system, so check Software Update and Apple’s security releases page rather than assuming a particular version applies to every Mac.
For context, Apple’s security-content page lists macOS Tahoe 26.7 as released September 14, 2026. That release date and version do not mean Tahoe 26.7 is available for or appropriate to every Mac; confirm compatibility and the update offered for your device.

Consider Lockdown Mode if targeted risk is plausible
Lockdown Mode is an optional built-in feature for Mac running macOS Ventura or later. Apple designed it for the very rare, highly sophisticated targeted attacks described in its guidance, not as a routine setting for every security concern. Apple recommends updating devices first to get the complete set of protections.
Turn it on
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode.
- Select Turn On, confirm, then select Turn On & Restart. You may need to enter your login password.
Lockdown Mode restricts some apps, websites, and features, so normal use may be affected. Review Apple’s About Lockdown Mode guidance before enabling it, and do not casually exclude sites from its protections.

Strengthen account and device protections
As general account and device hygiene, Apple recommends using a strong, unique Apple Account password and two-factor authentication, protecting the Mac with a device passcode or Touch ID, installing apps from the App Store, and avoiding links or attachments from unknown senders. These measures reduce account and device risks; they do not determine whether the Mac itself has been compromised or remove an exploit.
Choose recovery steps with data loss in mind
Reinstalling macOS from Recovery and erasing the Mac are different choices. A Recovery reinstall can retain files and settings. Erase and reinstall removes accounts, network settings, and files and folders, according to Apple. Neither option, on the available guidance alone, establishes that an unknown exploit has been fully remediated.

| Option | Effect on the existing installation and data | When to consider it |
|---|---|---|
| Update and use Lockdown Mode | Retains the current installation and files; Lockdown Mode restricts some features. | When you want current security fixes and additional protections without reinstalling, and the Mac supports Lockdown Mode. |
| Reinstall macOS from Recovery | Apple says this can reinstall macOS while retaining files and settings. | When a reinstall is appropriate but you want to retain the current files and settings. |
| Erase and reinstall | Deletes accounts, network settings, files, and folders. | When you have decided a clean erase is warranted and have preserved files you want to keep. |
Before an erase
Copy any files you want to keep to another storage device before erasing. If you already have a Time Machine backup, Apple documents restoring from it. A backup is for recovering data, not a security clearance: restoring files does not prove that an intrusion has been resolved. Follow Apple’s macOS Recovery instructions for Apple silicon for the relevant recovery and erase steps.
Apple’s Recovery instructions describe recovery and data management, not a specialist forensic process. If you need a reliable determination of whether the Mac was compromised—particularly after a credible targeted warning—seek qualified incident-response assistance rather than treating an update or reinstall as proof of a clean device.

Do not weaken startup security as a generic fix
Startup security controls vary by hardware and installed operating system. On Apple silicon, security policy is set per installed OS; Full Security permits only the current OS or signed OS software currently trusted by Apple. On a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip, authentication in Recovery is required for critical policy changes. These controls are not a substitute for triage, and the differences are a reason not to follow generic advice to weaken startup protections.
See Apple’s Apple Platform Security documentation for the controls applicable to the Mac’s hardware.
