How to Secure a Ledger Hardware Wallet and Verify Transactions Before Signing

Keep your Secret Recovery Phrase private and verify the address or transaction on your Ledger signer’s screen before approving it.

Keep your Secret Recovery Phrase offline and private, then check the transaction details on your Ledger signer’s own screen before physically approving anything. The connected phone or computer can initiate a transaction, but the device screen is where you should confirm that the action, destination or contract, asset, and amount match what you intend. If the details are missing, unreadable, or unexpected, reject the request.

Protect the recovery phrase before using the signer

Your Secret Recovery Phrase is the root secret used to restore access to the associated crypto assets. Ledger advises treating it as a private physical backup, not as an ordinary password: anyone who obtains it may be able to restore access. Never photograph it, store it in a cloud account, type it into a website or app, or disclose it in response to a message or support request. Keep the written phrase in a protected physical location. Ledger’s Crypto Wallet Security Checklist also recommends a difficult-to-guess device PIN and getting the companion app from Ledger’s official download page.

Do not rely on packaging strips as proof that a device is authentic or tamper-proof. Ledger notes that packaging differs by model and that strips concern packaging rather than providing tamper-proof security. If the packaging or device appears damaged, do not use it; contact official support.

Check a receiving address on the device

  1. Request the receiving address through the wallet workflow you intend to use, then connect and unlock the signer. Open the relevant asset app on the device if prompted.
  2. Compare the complete address shown on the signer’s screen with the address shown in the connected wallet interface. Do not rely only on the computer or phone display.
  3. Share the address only after the two displays match. When receiving through a third-party software wallet, Ledger recommends sending a small test transfer first and confirming receipt before sending more. See Ledger’s hardware-wallet security tips.

Review the transaction before you approve it

Start the transaction in Ledger Wallet or the third-party interface you are using. The connected device communicates the request, while Ledger describes the signer’s Secure Element as controlling its secure screen and performing the signing operation. The signer’s display—not the connected screen alone—is the checkpoint for your decision. Ledger explains how its hardware signers work.

  1. Read every detail the signer displays: the requested action, the destination address or contract, the asset, and the amount. Not every transaction will present every field in the same way.
  2. Compare those details with the action you meant to take. For a smart-contract interaction, make sure you understand whether you are transferring assets, interacting with a contract, or granting an approval.
  3. Approve physically only when the displayed information is readable, expected, and consistent with your intent. Reject a mismatch, an unexpected request, or details you cannot interpret.

Understand Clear Signing, blind signing, and alerts

Readable details with Clear Signing

Clear Signing presents transaction intent and relevant fields in a readable form on the signer. Ledger says Clear Signing is available in its integrated flows; outside those flows, support depends on the dApp. Ledger Wallet may also offer Transaction Check, which can analyze a transaction for potential threats and alert you before approval. Treat that alert as an additional signal—not proof that a transaction is safe. Ledger’s Clear Signing overview describes the feature and its integration scope.

Unreadable or incomplete data

Ledger defines blind signing as “approving a transaction without being able to clearly interpret its contents.” A raw hexadecimal string or generic data prompt does not provide the same readable basis for checking what the transaction will do. Prefer a route that supports Clear Signing. If one is unavailable, Ledger recommends using a transaction simulator where appropriate; proceed only if you can independently verify the intended effect. If you cannot understand what you are approving, reject it. Ledger’s blind-signing guidance explains the risk.

Reduce exposure when interacting with smart contracts

Some contract interactions involve approvals that can remain active beyond the immediate transaction. Ledger’s security checklist recommends revoking approvals you no longer need and separating assets across accounts or wallets so one risky interaction does not involve all your holdings. These measures can limit exposure; they do not establish that a contract is safe or recover assets after an unwanted transaction. Ledger’s checklist covers simulation, approval revocation, and asset separation.
