Secure your router by updating its firmware, using WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal, replacing default passwords, and disabling features you do not use. Keep it if it still receives security updates and supports modern encryption; plan to replace it if WPA2 and WPA3 remain unavailable after an update or the manufacturer has ended security updates for your exact model.
Update the router before changing its settings
Check the router maker’s website or its administration interface for a firmware update, then install any available security update. Router menus differ by manufacturer, so consult the instructions for your exact model rather than relying on a universal menu path. If your internet provider supplied the router, ask whether it installs firmware updates automatically and whether you need to take any action. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance recommends checking for updates and contacting the ISP about automatic updates for ISP-provided equipment.

Use WPA3 or WPA2 and strong, separate passwords
Choose a current Wi-Fi security mode
In the wireless security settings, choose WPA3 Personal if the router and your devices support it. Otherwise, use WPA2 Personal. The FTC describes WPA3 as the newer, best option and recommends WPA2 as well; both encrypt information sent over the Wi-Fi network. Avoid WPA and WEP. If neither WPA2 nor WPA3 appears, update the router software and check again before deciding whether to replace it.

Replace default credentials
Change the router’s default administrator username and password, along with the Wi-Fi network name. Use unique values that do not reveal your name, address, household details, or router brand. Keep the administrator password different from the Wi-Fi password: one controls router settings, while the other lets devices join the network. Store the administrator credentials somewhere secure so you can make future changes.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Turn off features you do not need
- Remote management: Disable it unless you have a specific need to manage the router from outside your home network.
- Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS): Turn it off if you do not use it to connect devices.
- Universal Plug and Play (UPnP): Disable it if your devices and applications do not require it.
The FTC recommends disabling remote management, WPS, and UPnP. CISA’s home-router security guidance also recommends turning off UPnP and remote management when they are not needed. Some device setup or connectivity workflows may rely on these features; if something stops working after you disable one, check whether the device or application requires it before deciding whether to turn it back on.
Use the router’s other built-in protections
- Set up a guest network for visitors, if your router offers one, rather than sharing your main Wi-Fi credentials.
- Confirm that the router’s firewall is enabled.
- Log out of the administrator account after making changes.
Decide whether to keep or replace the router
Keep it if it remains supported
A router is a reasonable candidate to keep if it supports WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, still receives firmware updates, and lets you change default credentials and disable features you do not need. Apply available updates and use the settings above. Age alone does not establish that a router is unsupported.

Plan to replace it if security support has ended
If a firmware update still leaves the router without WPA2 Personal or WPA3 Personal, the FTC advises considering a new router. Replacement is also prudent when the manufacturer has ended security updates for the exact model. Check the model number and hardware revision against the manufacturer’s support pages or end-of-life notices; support status can vary between revisions of a product with a similar name.

CISA advises communications-infrastructure operators to monitor vendor end-of-life announcements and upgrade as soon as possible. That is lifecycle context, not a household-router rule, but it reinforces why ongoing security support matters more than a device’s age by itself.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Check with your ISP about supplied equipment
If the ISP provided the router, ask whether it still supports that exact device, whether it updates firmware automatically, and what supported replacement options are available. Do not assume the router is either current or obsolete based only on who supplied it.
