How to Secure a Home NAS Before Enabling Remote Access

A practical preflight guide to securing a home NAS before remote access, including account hardening, updates, router checks, safer connection options, and recovery planning.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before enabling remote access, update and harden the NAS, remove unnecessary services and accounts, check the router for existing exposure, and set up a separate recovery copy. When your equipment supports it, connect to a VPN server on your home router first, then reach the NAS over your home network. This keeps the NAS itself from accepting the remote connection directly; it does not remove the need to secure and update the router’s VPN.

What changes when you enable remote access?

A NAS that is reachable from the internet can receive connection attempts from outside your home. The route may be an intentional port-forwarding rule, automatic forwarding through UPnP, a router DMZ setting, or a public IP connection. Do not assume that a NAS is private merely because it is plugged into a home router: check the router’s actual configuration.

QNAP’s remote-access guidance warns that a NAS directly connected through forwarding, UPnP, DMZ, or a public IP can be reachable by anyone and discoverable by attackers. QNAP Blog author Michael Wang made the point in an April 27, 2021 article, which also displays August 12, 2021: “Connecting your QNAP NAS directly to the Internet makes it reachable by anyone in the world.” This describes reachability, not a measured probability that a particular device will be compromised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest practical starting point is to keep the NAS behind the router and avoid exposing its services directly. If you decide a service must be published to the internet, reduce the number of reachable services and strengthen the authentication and protections on each one before creating the router rule.

Preflight: inventory the NAS and its network exposure

Before changing settings, identify the NAS make and model, its operating-system version, the applications and services it runs, and the router that connects it to the internet. Menu names and available protections differ between manufacturers and software versions; instructions for one model may not apply to another.

Review both sides of the network boundary. In the NAS, note which applications and network services are enabled. In the router, inspect port-forwarding rules, UPnP, and DMZ configuration. Remove rules you do not recognize only after confirming what they serve; if a rule belongs to another device or application, changing it can interrupt that service.

  • Record the NAS model and operating-system version so you can check its support and update guidance.
  • List the NAS applications, accounts, shares, and services that you actually use.
  • Inspect router forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ settings rather than relying on assumptions about the default configuration.
  • Confirm that the NAS and router are still supported and can receive security updates. The recommendations here do not establish support status for any particular model.

Update the NAS before opening a path into it

Install available supported updates for the NAS operating system and its applications before enabling remote access. Set a recurring reminder to check for later security updates, or enable automatic checks and installation if your device offers them and that behavior suits your needs. QNAP’s QTS 5.2.x user guide recommends regular firmware and application updates and describes automatic update checks and installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An update routine only helps if the device is still within its vendor’s support period. Check the support status for your exact model, not just the product family. If the vendor no longer provides security fixes, do not treat an otherwise successful update check as proof that the NAS is safe to expose.

Update the router too, especially if you plan to use it as the VPN endpoint. A router VPN reduces direct exposure of NAS services, but the router itself becomes the point you connect to remotely. Keep its software current and configure its authentication and access controls securely.

Harden accounts, sign-ins, and permissions

Do this before remote access makes NAS sign-in pages or services reachable beyond your home network. Use the device maker’s account guidance because default-account behavior varies by platform.

Replace or disable default administrator access

Where the NAS permits it, create or retain a named administrator account according to the vendor’s instructions, then disable the default administrator account. QNAP’s QTS 5.2.x guide recommends creating another administrator account and disabling the default one; Synology likewise recommends deactivating its default admin account. Do not disable an account until you have verified that your named administrator can sign in and perform required administrative tasks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use strong, unique credentials and multifactor protection

Give each account a strong password that is not reused on another service. Enable the NAS platform’s multifactor authentication (MFA) or two-step verification where available, especially for administrators and remote users. Do not assume every NAS supports the same MFA methods or lets you enforce MFA for every account.

For example, Synology DSM 7.4 documentation lists enforcement of two-factor authentication and adaptive MFA for specified users or groups, as well as account-protection rules for failed sign-ins. These are capabilities of that platform and version, not universal NAS features. Check the settings and supported options on your own device.

Remove unnecessary accounts and limit permissions

Review users, groups, shared folders, and applications. Remove accounts that are no longer needed, investigate unfamiliar ones, and grant ordinary users access only to the shares and services required for their tasks. Avoid using an administrator account for routine file access if the NAS lets you separate those roles.

Reduce the services a remote connection could reach

Disable NAS services and applications you do not use. This can include remote-shell access or web and database services when they are unnecessary. Fewer enabled services mean fewer things to maintain and fewer services you might accidentally make reachable through a router rule.

Do not forward SMB file sharing directly to the public internet. CISA’s StopRansomware guidance recommends disabling SMBv1 and moving to SMBv3 after checking dependencies. That is broad organizational guidance, so adapt it to the NAS and client operating systems you actually use: verify compatibility before disabling a protocol, and do not treat an SMB version change as a substitute for keeping file sharing off the public internet.

Where your NAS provides them, enable protections such as failed-login blocking, account protection, IP access restrictions, or security checks. Synology describes Security Advisor as a built-in DSM utility that scans settings and recommends improvements. QNAP documents Security Counselor and Malware Remover. These tools can surface issues, but a clean scan is not a guarantee that the device is secure.

Choose how you will connect from outside the home

There is no universally best route for every NAS and router. Consider whether the NAS itself accepts inbound internet connections, how much configuration and maintenance the route requires, how access can be revoked, which authentication controls are available, and whether the route depends on a vendor relay or your home internet upload speed.

Route What is reachable from the internet Practical considerations
VPN server on the home router The router’s VPN endpoint; connect to the home network before accessing the NAS. QNAP recommends this approach to keep the NAS behind the router. The VPN endpoint still needs updates and secure authentication; router support and client compatibility matter.
Directly published NAS service The service you expose through a router rule. Forward only required service ports, use encrypted connections, and apply MFA and login protections where available. You take on responsibility for keeping the exposed service and NAS current.
Vendor relay service The remote-access route depends on the vendor’s service rather than a direct inbound connection to the NAS. QNAP mentions myQNAPcloud Link as an alternative and notes that relayed traffic may be slower. Check current feature details and terms with the vendor before relying on it.

Prefer a router VPN when it fits your setup

QNAP’s guidance prefers keeping the NAS behind the router and using the router’s VPN server to connect into the home network. In practical terms, your remote device first joins your home network through the VPN; you then access the NAS as a device on that network. This avoids publishing NAS services directly, but it does not make the VPN endpoint invulnerable or remove the need for secure NAS accounts.

Check whether the router supports a VPN server and whether it can be maintained with current software. Follow the router maker’s setup instructions for authentication and compatible client apps; there is no single menu path or configuration that applies to every router. Plan how to remove or disable VPN access for a device or user that should no longer connect.

If you publish a NAS service directly

Direct exposure is a higher-maintenance choice because the NAS service itself can receive internet connection attempts. QNAP recommends encrypted connections, manual forwarding only for required services, firewall filtering, MFA, IP access protection, and updates for this scenario. Apply the strongest controls your device supports and verify that the service you need is the only one the router makes reachable.

QNAP also mentions changing external port numbers as an additional measure. A nonstandard port may reduce casual discovery, but it does not replace strong authentication, updates, encryption, or limiting exposure. Do not rely on a changed port number as a security boundary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for convenience, compatibility, and performance

A router VPN may require a compatible router and a VPN client on each remote computer or phone. A direct service can be more convenient for a particular application, but it requires careful port and service management. A relay may avoid some direct-connection configuration, but it introduces dependence on the vendor’s service and, according to QNAP, relayed traffic can be slower. Actual performance depends on your setup, including the home connection’s upload capacity; the available guidance does not establish a universal speed comparison.

Apply the router and NAS changes deliberately

Make one change at a time and verify the result before proceeding. The exact labels depend on the router and NAS, so use the manuals for the models and versions you own rather than copying menu paths from another device.

  1. Finish device hardening first. Update supported NAS software and applications, secure accounts, enable available sign-in protections, and disable unneeded services.
  2. Choose the access route. Check router VPN support and client compatibility. If using a relay, confirm the vendor’s current availability and terms. If publishing a service directly, identify the single service and port it requires from the vendor’s current documentation.
  3. Review existing router exposure. Check port forwarding, UPnP, and DMZ settings. Remove unneeded NAS exposure and avoid leaving multiple routes open for the same purpose.
  4. Configure only the selected route. For a VPN, configure the router’s supported VPN service and remote clients. For direct access, create only the required manual forwarding rule, use encrypted connections, and apply the available firewall and login controls.
  5. Test from outside the home network. Use a remote connection such as a phone on cellular service rather than assuming a successful connection from inside the house proves the route works securely. Confirm that the intended access works and that unneeded NAS services are not part of the configuration.
  6. Keep a record and a revocation plan. Note which accounts, devices, router rules, and services are authorized. When access is no longer needed, remove the relevant account or VPN access and delete the forwarding rule or disable the relay configuration.

Check the configuration and prepare to recover files

Run the security tools available on the NAS and review their findings rather than treating the scan as a pass/fail seal of approval. Synology’s Security Advisor scans DSM settings and recommends improvements; its documentation also describes account protection. QNAP documents Security Counselor and Malware Remover. Feature names and availability depend on the platform and version.

Remote access is not a backup strategy. A NAS that is reachable from elsewhere is still one live system, and access to it does not provide a separate recovery copy. Before relying on it remotely, set up a backup destination distinct from the live NAS and check that you can restore files from it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

QNAP’s QTS 5.2.x guide describes Hybrid Backup Sync for backups to external devices, a remote NAS, or cloud storage. It also describes snapshots and snapshot replication as recovery mechanisms. Snapshots can help recover earlier file states, but snapshots on the same NAS are not an independent backup; RAID is not a backup either. An external USB drive can be one destination, but verify compatibility with your exact NAS model and interface.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the router makes every NAS private. Forwarding, UPnP, DMZ, or a public-IP configuration can change what is reachable. Check the actual router settings.
  • Opening more ports than the service needs. Each unnecessary exposure adds configuration and maintenance work. Do not forward SMB to the public internet.
  • Treating a custom port as protection. Changing a port number does not replace encryption, secure authentication, MFA, updates, or access restrictions.
  • Leaving default or unused accounts active. Follow the NAS maker’s procedure for replacing or disabling default administrator access, and remove accounts that no longer need access.
  • Assuming a security scan guarantees safety. Vendor utilities offer checks and recommendations, not a guarantee against compromise.
  • Confusing redundancy or snapshots with a separate backup. Maintain a recoverable copy on a distinct destination and confirm that restoration works.

Version and support caveats

This is a cross-vendor preflight guide, not a model-specific setup procedure. QNAP’s cited recommendations come from its QTS 5.2.x user guide and remote-access guidance. Synology’s hardening article applies to DSM 7 series and legacy versions and was last updated May 27, 2026; the cited DSM 7.4 feature documentation describes capabilities for that version. CISA’s SMB advice is general StopRansomware guidance for organizations and should be adapted to the devices and dependencies in a home network.

Before changing settings, verify current menu names, feature support, firmware status, and router compatibility against the exact device and software versions in your home. A recommendation that depends on a feature is useful only if your model supports it and that feature is configured correctly.
