To search for a Nintendo game name in the United States, use the official USPTO Trademark Search. Search the name as a wordmark, broaden the wording, search Nintendo-related owners separately, and inspect any promising records in the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval system (TSDR). A database match is a lead for further review—not proof that a name is unavailable or legally cleared.
Start with the official USPTO search
The USPTO’s Trademark Search system is the federal database for applied-for and registered marks. It is the right place to begin when checking whether a Nintendo game name appears in the U.S. federal trademark records.

Search the wording first, then use the results to identify records worth reviewing. This is a search workflow, not a current audit of any particular Nintendo title: individual records and their status can change.
Search the game name, then broaden the wording
Run an exact-phrase search
Start with the game’s name. The basic wordmark and general-search options search one word at a time, according to the USPTO’s Trademark Search help. For a multiword name as a phrase, use the field-tag or search-builder approach and enclose the words in straight double quotation marks. The help page’s example is CM:"happy birthday" AND LD:true; substitute the game wording and remove the live-status filter if you want to see dead records too.

Look for close variations
An exact phrase may not reveal every relevant record. Search important words separately and in combinations, and try plausible alternative spellings and pronunciations. Also check marks that add or omit wording. The USPTO describes a “knock-out” search as a starting point and recommends expanding the search rather than treating a single query as conclusive.
Search owner names as a separate angle
To look for records associated with a Nintendo owner, use the owner-name search option or the ON: field tag. The USPTO help page gives ON:"John Smith" as an example. Replace the example with the owner wording you want to investigate, and inspect the owner shown on each record. Do not assume all relevant records belong to the same Nintendo entity.

Use goods and services to assess relevance
A similar name matters most when the record covers goods or services related to the use you have in mind. The USPTO help page supports the GS: field tag; its example is GS:"yoga pants". Read the goods-and-services identification in a promising record rather than relying on a result’s summary alone.
International class can help filter results, but it does not decide whether two marks are related. The help page gives IC:025 as a class-search example. Marks in different classes may still cover related goods or services, so do not rule out a record solely because its class number differs.

Check whether a result is live, then open it in TSDR
The Trademark Search help documents LD:true for live records and LD:false for dead records. For example, adding AND LD:true to an exact-phrase query limits the search to live records. A live result with similar wording and related goods or services deserves closer review; a dead result is not the same as a live federal record, but it may still offer useful context about the mark’s history.
Open a relevant search result in TSDR, the USPTO’s Trademark Status and Document Retrieval system. Review the record details and documents, including its status and prosecution or maintenance information. A results tile alone may not show the details needed to understand what the record covers.

Compare similar records on more than the name
When several records look relevant, assess them together rather than treating a shared word or class as decisive. The USPTO’s federal trademark searching guidance points to the limits of database searching and the need to expand beyond a simple knock-out check. In practice, compare:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- How the marks look and sound, what they mean, and the overall impression they create.
- The goods and services actually listed, and how closely they relate to the use you are considering.
- Whether the record is live or dead.
- The record’s status and relevant prosecution or maintenance details in TSDR.
Class numbers are useful search filters, not a shortcut for deciding relatedness. The USPTO cautions: “There’s no surefire way to uncover all potentially conflicting trademarks.”
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand

Know what a USPTO search can—and cannot—establish
A federal database search is an essential part of a comprehensive clearance search, but it does not guarantee that you have found every potentially conflicting mark or establish that a name is legally available. The USPTO notes that a thorough search may require sources outside its database. If you are making a consequential naming decision or the results are complex, consider consulting a private trademark attorney; that is professional advice, not a USPTO service.
