The available details also do not identify the tool implied by “I built it,” so this article covers verified Outlook options without inventing its features or compatibility.
First decide what “multiple categories” means
There are two different searches people commonly want:

- Either category (OR): find a message tagged with Category A or Category B.
- Both categories (AND): find a message tagged with Category A and Category B.
Before choosing a method, identify your Outlook client—classic Outlook for Windows, new Outlook for Windows, Outlook on the web, Outlook for Mac, or mobile—and its version. Search controls and supported query behavior are not established as identical across them.
Try Outlook’s category search and filter
Microsoft documents the category: search operator. For example, category:red searches for items whose category name includes “red.” This is a contains search, not an exact-label match: Microsoft’s examples include category names such as “Red category,” “Redo,” and “Redundant.” If several category names share a word, results may include more than the one label you intended.
Microsoft also documents a category refinement in Outlook search: choose a category to further filter results. The support instructions cover Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, and Outlook 2021, and describe search scopes including all mailboxes, the current mailbox, the current folder, its subfolders, or all Outlook items. The documentation explains choosing a category; it does not promise that this control can express arbitrary AND/OR combinations of category values.

Save category criteria with a Search Folder in classic Outlook
For classic Outlook editions covered by Microsoft’s documentation—Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016—a custom Search Folder can use criteria that include specific categories. A Search Folder is a saved virtual folder: it presents matching mail without moving the original messages. Check that your Outlook client has Search Folders before relying on this route; the cited documentation does not establish that the feature is available in every Outlook client.
- In classic Outlook, open the Folder tab and choose New Search Folder.
- Choose the custom Search Folder option and select Choose to define criteria.
- Set the criteria to include the category or categories you need, then save the Search Folder.
Microsoft documents custom Search Folders and category criteria, but does not specify in that overview the exact Boolean behavior for every multi-category combination. Confirm that the folder returns the intended messages in your Outlook version.

Outlook for Mac: Category is an Advanced Query Search field
Microsoft’s Outlook for Mac guide lists Category as an Advanced Query Search field and explains that Advanced Query Search (AQS) can combine search terms, with general AND/OR examples. That establishes Boolean querying in this Mac search context; it does not prove that category combinations behave the same way in Mac, Windows, web, and new Outlook. Use the Mac-specific guidance for your installed version and test whether the query returns messages with either selected category or both.

Microsoft describes Outlook’s Categories field as multi-value keywords. In the Outlook object model, it behaves like text with values separated by comma and space; Microsoft warns that the Find and Restrict methods may not easily retrieve every item assigned a given category when multiple categories are present. This is a caveat for developers using those API methods, not evidence that Outlook’s ordinary search interface universally fails at multiple-category searches.

Microsoft Exchange eDiscovery also documents a Category property and Boolean operators, but that is a specialized mailbox-search context, not a regular Outlook search-box workaround.

What is—and is not—established about the built tool
The title’s “I built it” refers to a tool, but the available product details do not establish its name, supported Outlook clients, setup, category logic, exact-versus-partial matching, data handling, limitations, or availability. Those facts are necessary to tell readers whether it solves an OR search, an AND search, or both, and whether it works with their mailbox. No compatibility or privacy claim about that tool can responsibly be made without its documentation.
