  3. Type the word or phrase in the Find field.

Replace one match or every match on a computer

  1. Open Edit > Find and replace and enter the existing text beside Find.
  2. Enter the new text beside Replace with.
  3. Click Next or Prev to select the occurrence you want to change, then click Replace to change only that match.
  4. To change every matching occurrence, click Replace all.

Before using Replace all, check both fields carefully: it applies the replacement throughout the document rather than only to the selected match. [Google Docs Editors Help]

Use case-sensitive or regular-expression search

The desktop Find and replace window includes optional search settings:

  • Match case requires the capitalization in your search text to match.
  • Match using regular expressions searches for a pattern rather than only a literal word or phrase.

Google Docs supports regular expressions for finding text, but regex replacement patterns and capture groups are not interpreted in the replacement field; they are inserted literally. Google documents regex replacement patterns and capture groups as a Sheets feature, not a Docs feature. [Google Docs Editors Help]
