To find a tab that is already open in Chrome on a computer, select Tab Search in the tab strip and enter keywords. You can also open Tab Search with Ctrl + Shift + A on Windows or Linux, Command + Shift + A on Mac, or by typing @tabs in the address bar. Choose a result to switch to that tab. Google Chrome Help documents these methods.
Search open tabs from the tab strip
- Open Chrome on your computer.
- Select Tab Search in the tab strip. Google describes the control as a down-arrow/search button; the feature also works when tabs are arranged vertically.
- Enter keywords related to the site or tab you want.
- Select the matching result to open that tab. To close a tab from the results instead, use its close control. Google Chrome Help has the current desktop instructions.
Open Tab Search with a keyboard shortcut

After the Tab Search panel opens, enter keywords and select the tab you want. These are the shortcuts listed in Google’s Chrome tab instructions.

Search tabs from the address bar
- Click Chrome’s address bar and type
@tabs. - Press Tab or Space, or choose Search tabs from the suggestions.
- Enter keywords, then select the matching tab. Google Chrome Help documents this address-bar route.
If the Tab Search button is missing
Google says Tab Search is enabled and pinned in the tab strip by default. If you previously unpinned it, right-click the Tab Search control and choose Unpin. Google also lists this setting path: Settings > Appearance > Show tab search button. The Chrome Help page provides the desktop guidance.

Tab Search versus Find on a page
Tab Search finds an already-open tab. If you want to locate a word or phrase on the page currently displayed, use Chrome’s Find command instead: Ctrl + F on Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, or Command + F on Mac. Google’s instructions for searching in Chrome cover Find.

Chrome also offers an AI Mode workflow for asking questions about tabs or adding tabs as context, but Google says it is not available to everyone or on every device. It is separate from the basic Tab Search workflow for locating a particular open tab; AI Mode is not required. Google’s AI tab-search guidance describes that feature.
