Choose Rectangular snip, drag around the part of the screen you need, and release. The capture is copied to the clipboard; click the Snipping Tool notification to edit and save it, or paste it with Ctrl + V into Paint, Word, email, or another app.
This is a Windows workflow, so HP model differences mainly affect the labels and placement of keys such as PrtScn. The region-capture shortcut remains the most consistent way to select only part of the display.
Capture a selected area with Windows + Shift + S
Use this shortcut when you need a section of a webpage, application, photo, document, or desktop rather than the entire screen.
- Open the page or application and arrange the content you want to capture.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S at the same time. The screen dims and the Snipping Tool capture toolbar appears.
- Choose Rectangular snip. This mode lets you draw a box around the exact area.
- Move the pointer to one corner of the desired region, hold the mouse button, drag to the opposite corner, and release.
- The snip is placed on the Windows clipboard. Select the notification that appears to open it in Snipping Tool, or switch to another application and press Ctrl + V to paste it.
Microsoft describes the shortcut as: “Windows logo key + Shift + S | Select a region of the screen to capture a screenshot to the clipboard.” The important detail is that the first destination is the clipboard, not automatically a file.

Choose another snip shape when a rectangle is not enough
The toolbar also provides Free-form snip, Window snip, and Full-screen snip. Free-form lets you trace an irregular outline, Window snip captures a selected application window, and Full-screen snip captures the complete display. For a clean crop with straight edges, Rectangular snip is usually the quickest choice.
Open the capture, annotate it, and save a file
After you release the mouse button, Windows normally shows a Snipping Tool notification. Click it to open the captured image in the editor. From there you can use the available markup tools and the save command to create an image file.
Save directly from another application
If you do not need annotations, paste the clipboard image into Paint, an email, a document, or a chat window with Ctrl + V. In Paint, use its save command to choose an image format and filename. Pasting is also useful when the recipient needs the screenshot embedded in a document instead of supplied as a separate file.
What happens if you dismiss the notification?
Dismissing the notification does not usually erase the snip immediately; the image remains available on the clipboard until another copy operation replaces it. Press Ctrl + V in the destination application as soon as possible. If you need the editor rather than a paste, open Snipping Tool from Start and use a new capture.

Use the Snipping Tool app instead of the keyboard shortcut
The app is useful when you want to select a mode deliberately, set a delay, or edit before saving.
- Select Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch the app.
- Choose New.
- Select the capture mode you need: rectangular, free-form, window, or full screen.
- Drag over the region, choose the window, or allow the full-screen capture to complete, depending on the mode.
- Use the editor and its save command to store the result.
Opening the app takes longer than the shortcut, but it exposes the controls before you capture. That makes it a practical fallback if the key combination does not respond or if you need a delayed capture.
How Print Screen differs on HP keyboards
Print Screen (PrtScn) is primarily a full-screen capture command. Microsoft documents Windows logo key + PrtScn as a full-screen shortcut on hardware that supports it. On some HP keyboards, PrtSc, PrtScn, or the print-screen function is printed on another key or assigned as a secondary action, so you may need to hold Fn.
If an HP keyboard has no clearly labeled PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative on supported devices. Whether that alternative works depends on the keyboard hardware. None of these full-screen combinations replaces Windows logo key + Shift + S when your goal is to draw a box around only part of the screen.

Troubleshooting a missing or incorrect screenshot
Nothing happens after pressing the shortcut
- Press the Windows key, Shift, and S together, then release them before trying again.
- Confirm that you are using the Windows logo key, not Ctrl or Alt.
- Open Start, type Snipping Tool, and launch it. If the app opens, select New and capture the area from there.
The image seems to disappear
The capture may simply be on the clipboard. Click the Snipping Tool notification if it is still visible, or open an application such as Paint and press Ctrl + V. Copying something else replaces the clipboard contents, so paste the snip before performing another copy operation.
Print Screen opens Snipping Tool or behaves differently
Windows updates and keyboard settings can change what the PrtScn key does. For a selected region, bypass that uncertainty with Windows logo key + Shift + S. If PrtScn is a secondary function on your HP keyboard, try the key with Fn, but use the region shortcut when you need predictable selection.
Your HP keyboard has no obvious PrtScn key
Use the Snipping Tool app or the Windows logo key + Shift + S shortcut. On supported hardware, Microsoft’s documented alternative is Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar; unsupported keyboards will not respond to that combination.
You captured the wrong shape
Repeat the shortcut and choose Rectangular snip before dragging. Free-form snip follows a hand-drawn outline, while Window snip selects a complete application window. Selecting the mode first avoids having to crop a full-screen image later.

Make the selection accurately
- Put the pointer at the exact first corner before pressing the mouse button.
- Drag all the way to the opposite corner before releasing; the selected box defines the captured region.
- Use Window snip when you want an entire app window and do not need to draw its borders manually.
- Use the Snipping Tool app when a delay or editing step is more important than the fastest possible capture.
- Remember that the shortcut captures what is visible at the time of the snip and initially creates clipboard content; saving is a separate step unless you open the notification and use the editor.
