For a quick rectangular capture, use your browser’s built-in tool: in Firefox choose Take Screenshot (or press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows/Linux, Command+Shift+S on Mac), then drag over the area. In Microsoft Edge, open Screenshot, choose Capture area, and select the region. Both browsers let you copy or save the result; Edge also offers markup.
Choose the kind of capture you actually need
“Part of a web page” can mean three different outputs. Pick the one that matches your purpose before selecting anything.
| Goal | Best mode | What it captures |
|---|---|---|
| A custom rectangle | Firefox custom region or Edge Capture area | The pixels inside the rectangle you draw |
| One complete page element | Firefox Developer Tools Screenshot Node | A selected DOM element and its descendants, even when it is not a simple rectangle |
| What is currently visible | Firefox Save visible | The current viewport |
| The whole long page | Firefox Save full page or Edge full-page capture | Content below the scroll position as well as the visible area |
A region capture is not the same as a viewport or full-page capture. Choosing the wrong mode is the most common reason a screenshot is missing content.
Firefox: capture a selected region
Open the screenshot tool
- Open the page in Firefox desktop.
- Right-click an empty area of the page and select Take Screenshot. If the context menu is inconvenient, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
Draw or select the page part
- For a custom rectangle, click and drag across the desired area.
- Adjust the selection with its handles, or move it to a new position.
- Alternatively, move the pointer over the page. Firefox highlights recognizable page parts; click the highlighted part to select it automatically.
Copy or save
Choose the option to copy the image to the clipboard or download it. A downloaded Firefox capture is a PNG saved to the browser’s normal download location.

Use Firefox’s other capture modes
- Save visible captures the current viewport without a drawn selection.
- Save full page captures the complete page, including content below the fold.
Mozilla’s help documentation also describes keyboard navigation and resizing. On Wayland, moving the crosshair is not supported, although the documented keyboard selection and resizing controls remain available.
Microsoft Edge: use Capture area
Launch Screenshot
- Open the page in Edge.
- Right-click the page and choose Screenshot, press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open the tool from Edge’s Settings menu.
- Select Capture area. Microsoft’s January 2, 2024 U.S.-market tutorial describes this as the left option in the tool.
Select, annotate and save
- Drag over the region you want.
- Use Edge’s markup tools if you need to draw, highlight or add review notes.
- Copy the image or save it to a file.
Edge’s Screenshot tool can also capture a full webpage, including content that would normally require scrolling. Microsoft cautions that availability and functionality can vary by device type, market and browser version, so labels may differ on your installation.
Capture an exact HTML element in Firefox
A manually drawn rectangle includes whatever happens to be underneath it: margins, neighboring text and background. If you need one card, table, image or component as rendered by the page, use Firefox Developer Tools.
Inspector method
- Open Developer Tools and select the Inspector.
- In the HTML pane, locate the element.
- Open that element’s context menu and choose Screenshot Node.
- Firefox saves the rendered element image in your Downloads folder.
Web Console method
Technically comfortable users can open the Web Console and use the documented helper:
:screenshot --selector <CSS selector>
The selector option captures the selected element and its descendants. Firefox’s helper also documents options for delay, device-pixel-ratio, filename, full-page output and clipboard handling. This route is precise, but it requires a valid selector and familiarity with developer tools.
Region, element or full page: practical decisions
- Use a region when you are explaining one visible portion of a design, error or article.
- Use an element capture when borders, padding and the complete component must be preserved.
- Use visible when the viewport itself is the evidence, such as a menu state.
- Use full page for documentation, archiving or a page that extends below the fold.
Before capturing, close menus that should not appear, scroll to the relevant state, wait for images to finish loading and check whether a sticky header is covering the content. If the page changes while you drag, pause animations or use an element capture instead.
Firefox and Edge compared
| Consideration | Firefox | Edge |
|---|---|---|
| Region selection | Take Screenshot, drag a rectangle or click an automatically highlighted part | Screenshot → Capture area |
| Shortcut | Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows/Linux); Command+Shift+S (Mac) | Ctrl+Shift+S |
| Element-only workflow | Developer Tools Screenshot Node and :screenshot –selector | Not established by the documented sources here |
| Copy and save | Both | Both |
| Markup | Not described as part of the basic capture flow | Built-in drawing/markup |
| Full-page capture | Save full page | Supported, including below the visible scroll area |
For a straightforward rectangle plus automatic page-part detection, Firefox is the clearest documented choice. Edge is especially useful when annotation is part of the review. These are feature-based comparisons from vendor documentation, not a performance test.
When the shortcut or menu is missing
Check browser and device scope
The documented workflows are for desktop Firefox and Edge. Browser version, device type and market can affect Edge’s availability. Current ordinary Chrome region-screenshot steps were not established by the documentation reviewed here; a Chrome page-selection feature for Gemini is a different function and should not be treated as a saved screenshot workflow.

Use the browser’s own support path
If your browser does not offer the command, consult its current help for your exact version. The available documentation here does not establish reliable, current steps for Safari, iPhone, Android or operating-system screenshot utilities, so do not assume desktop shortcuts will work on a phone.
Troubleshooting
The capture is blank or missing images
Wait for the page and lazy-loaded images to finish, then capture again. A full-page method may trigger additional loading; an element capture can be preferable for one component.
The wrong thing is selected
For Firefox, move the pointer until the intended page part is highlighted, or draw a rectangle manually. For exact boundaries, use Inspector → Screenshot Node.
The screenshot includes a cookie banner, popup or chat box
Dismiss the overlay before capturing. If it returns on every load or you need repeatable automated captures, use an API workflow that can remove those elements before rendering.
Keyboard shortcuts do nothing
Use the page context menu instead. On macOS, Firefox uses Command+Shift+S rather than the Windows/Linux combination. In Edge, labels and availability can vary with version and market.
Text looks too small
Capture the element rather than a large surrounding rectangle, increase the browser zoom before selecting, or use a higher device-pixel-ratio option in Firefox’s developer-tool helper. Remember that changing zoom changes the rendered layout.

For scripts, documentation builds or many URLs, ScreenshotNeo returns a screenshot or PDF from one request. It can capture a CSS-selected element, full pages with lazy images loaded, dark mode, any viewport or one of 12 device presets, retina scale, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks before capture, hidden selectors, waits for a selector, delay or network idle, blocked ads/trackers/requests/resource types, custom headers, cookies, user agents, Authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks and bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call. The same service also provides usage and OpenAPI endpoints, and parameter names used by other screenshot APIs work for easier migration.

Before capture it accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Reliability, privacy and cost notes
- Browser tools are convenient for one-off, local captures and keep the page in your browser session.
- Developer Tools are better for a repeatable element boundary, but selectors can break when a site changes its HTML.
- Automation should set explicit waits, viewport and authentication inputs, then inspect the X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed response headers.
- Do not place API keys in public client-side code. Keep them in a server-side environment and avoid capturing confidential pages unless your access and retention policies allow it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I select an irregular shape instead of a rectangle?
The documented Firefox and Edge workflows select a rectangular area or an automatically detected page part. They do not document freehand polygon selection.
Will a region screenshot include content below the fold?
No. A drawn region captures what is displayed in that area. Choose Save full page or Edge’s full-page mode for content below the current scroll position.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhich method is best for a single card or component?
Firefox Developer Tools’ Screenshot Node is the most precise documented option because it captures the selected DOM element and its descendants.
Can I annotate an Edge screenshot before saving?
Yes. Edge’s Screenshot tool provides markup controls before you copy or save the image.
