For an automated screenshot of a web page, capture the page or the element you need through your browser automation framework—not the desktop. Playwright supports viewport, full-page, and element screenshots, while Selenium documents screenshots of elements in the current browsing context. These capture rendered page content; they do not guarantee that headful automation will leave operating-system focus untouched. A Puppeteer report about focus dates to 2018 and describes one setup, not a universal rule.
If by “focus changes” you mean that your desktop switches to a browser window, first reproduce the behavior with your actual operating system, browser, automation version, and headless or headful mode. The right remedy depends on whether you need a web page image or a screenshot of the desktop window.
Choose the screenshot that matches what you need
Browser automation can capture a rendered page without using a desktop screenshot action. Decide what part of the browser-rendered content matters before changing your launch mode or trying to suppress window activation.
- Viewport: Use a page screenshot when the visible browser viewport is the target. This is useful for a particular scroll position or a state that fits on screen.
- One component: Capture a locator or element when the issue concerns a control, card, dialog, or other specific part of the page.
- Full page: Use a full-page screenshot when content below the fold matters. Playwright documents this as a screenshot of the full scrollable page, rather than just the current viewport.
- Desktop or browser chrome: A page or element screenshot is not a screenshot of the entire desktop, other applications, browser tabs, or operating-system UI. If those are what you need, use a desktop/window capture method appropriate to your operating system instead.
See Playwright’s Page API for page screenshot options, and its Selenium documentation on windows and tabs for context on WebDriver’s current browsing context.

Capture a page with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright’s Chromium browser. It opens a page, takes a viewport image, an element image, and a full-page image, then closes the browser. Save it as capture.js. Install Playwright with npm install playwright, then run node capture.js. The browser binary may need to be installed for your environment; Playwright’s installation guidance is part of its package documentation.
const { chromium } = require('playwright');
(async () => {
const browser = await chromium.launch({ headless: true });
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
// The currently rendered viewport.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'viewport.png' });
// Replace 'h1' with a selector for the component you want.
await page.locator('h1').screenshot({ path: 'element.png' });
// The scrollable page, including content below the viewport.
await page.screenshot({ path: 'full-page.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
For a page that never reaches network idle—for example, one that keeps a connection open—use a different readiness condition rather than waiting indefinitely. You can wait for a specific element that signals the content is ready, or use a deliberate delay when the page’s behavior requires it. Pick a condition tied to the page you are capturing, not merely a longer timeout.
Capture only the relevant state
A screenshot records what has rendered at capture time. If you need a particular state, make that state part of the automation before taking the image: navigate to the right URL, wait for the relevant content, and select the right viewport or element. For a visual regression, keep those steps and settings identical from run to run. A capture taken before a delayed component appears is not equivalent to one taken afterward.
Keep output types distinct
The examples produce PNG files. Playwright’s page screenshot API also supports image options such as the output type and full-page capture; consult the current API reference for the exact supported options for your installed version. Use the screenshot method that matches the deliverable: a browser-rendered page image is different from a recording of the active desktop.

Does taking a screenshot switch browser or desktop focus?
There is no basis here for saying that every screenshot capture steals focus, or that a particular current setting prevents it on every system. A Puppeteer GitHub issue opened June 1, 2018 describes one user’s report with Puppeteer 1.4 on macOS while using headless: false. It is a historical report, not a guarantee about current Puppeteer, Chrome, Playwright, Selenium, or other platforms. Read the report in its original context at Puppeteer issue #2656.
Reproduce the symptom in the configuration that matters. Record the operating system, browser and automation versions, headless/headful setting, and whether another application was active. Then compare the output and observe whether the automation runner activates a browser window. A result from one configuration should not be generalized to other browsers or machines.
Page focus and operating-system focus are different questions
A page screenshot API captures browser-rendered content. The cited API documentation does not establish that a headful browser will never activate its window or disturb the active desktop. If your requirement is specifically “take the image without changing which desktop application is active,” verify that exact behavior in your target environment; do not infer it from the fact that the screenshot came from a page API.
Also be clear about which focus matters to your test. A page can render a focused control or other focus-dependent styling while the operating system’s active window is a separate concern. Specify whether you need the page’s rendered state, the active browser window, or a desktop image containing other applications.

Make screenshots repeatable
For visual testing, a screenshot can change even when the page code has not. Playwright’s visual snapshot documentation calls out the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless/headful mode as possible sources of rendering variation. Keep the baseline and subsequent captures in the same environment where practical, and record that environment with the result. See Playwright’s visual snapshot guidance.
- Pin or record the browser and automation versions used for baseline and comparison runs.
- Keep viewport dimensions, browser settings, and headless/headful mode consistent.
- Run comparisons on the same operating system and, where feasible, the same hardware and power conditions.
- Wait for the page state you intend to compare rather than capturing at an arbitrary moment.
- For Playwright snapshot assertions, use supported controls such as disabling animations or masking known dynamic regions when those changes are irrelevant to the comparison. Check the documentation for the API and version you use.
These controls improve comparison consistency; they are not a promise that separate machines will render every page identically.
When Selenium is the better fit
If your existing workflow uses Selenium, you do not need to switch frameworks solely to capture an element. Selenium documents taking an element screenshot in the current browsing context. That makes an element screenshot a natural fit when the component is the subject of the record. The cited Selenium page is about working with windows and tabs, so it does not establish a universal guarantee about operating-system focus during capture.
Choose between frameworks based on your existing automation and the capture target, not an unsupported ranking: viewport, element, or whole scrollable page; page content or desktop window; headless or headful execution; and the browser and operating system you must support.

For a remote page image without installing a browser automation runner, ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API: one GET request returns an image or PDF from a URL. It is not a desktop-window capture method, and it does not promise that a local headful browser will preserve operating-system focus. Cookie banners and consent prompts are handled before capture, with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets removed. Bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. An MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
Example cURL request, using the documented API endpoint and parameters:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication, output options, and the other capture parameters. ScreenshotNeo supports full-page and element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, wait conditions, device and viewport settings, PDF options, and other controls; each step in consent and widget cleanup can be turned off. The browser window appears in front of another application
First check whether the run is headful and reproduce with the same browser, operating system, framework version, and target page. The 2018 Puppeteer issue is evidence of one historical report, not proof that a current setting will prevent activation. If only page pixels are required, use a page or element screenshot API; if the output must include the desktop, use a desktop capture workflow and test its focus behavior separately.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
Check that navigation completed and that the content you need had rendered before capture. Replace a generic wait with a wait for the page’s relevant element or state. If the failure persists, compare with a screenshot of the viewport and inspect the same URL in the same browser environment.

The screenshot cuts off content
A normal page screenshot captures the viewport. Use Playwright’s fullPage: true for the scrollable page, or capture the specific element whose entire bounds matter. These are different targets; a full-page image can be much taller than the visible viewport.
The result changes between runs
Compare the execution environment and capture settings before treating the difference as a page regression. Browser version, operating system, hardware, power conditions, viewport, settings, and headless/headful mode can all affect rendering. Stabilize those conditions and use Playwright’s documented animation and masking controls for dynamic visual comparisons where appropriate.
The capture method does not show tabs or another app
That is expected for page-content capture. Use a desktop/window screenshot method if browser chrome or other applications are part of the required image; the cited page and element APIs do not claim to capture the desktop.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a camera or capture card to screenshot a web page with browser automation?
No. The documented Playwright and Selenium workflows capture rendered page content through software APIs; the cited workflows require no physical capture device.
Will a headless browser always prevent focus changes?
The available sources do not establish a universal focus guarantee for headless or headful capture. Reproduce the behavior in the browser, operating system, framework version, and launch mode you actually use.
