Choose the capture method

Use the same query, browser version, viewport, locale, device settings, and headful or headless mode when comparing captures. Record the date and time too: Google results and page state can vary with context.

Capture a SERP manually in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome and DevTools. Select the DevTools menu, then More tools > Network conditions. If Network conditions is not visible, open the command menu and search for it.
- In Network conditions, clear Use browser default under User agent, then enter the full UA string you want Chrome to send.
- In the same panel, you can disable the cache if you need to follow Google’s documented ad-destination testing sequence. Google documents this override for checking ad landing pages, not as a method for obtaining a definitive Search results page. See Google Ads Help: Override user agent with Chrome DevTools.
- With the override active, navigate to the Google search URL for your query or reload it. For example, use
https://www.google.com/search?q=browser+user+agent. The search URL applies the same override to a SERP capture; it is not the ad-destination use case described by Google. - Capture the page using Chrome’s screenshot capability or your operating system’s screenshot tool. If you need a full-page capture, use DevTools’ command menu and choose the full-size screenshot option where available.
- Save the query, capture time, Chrome version, viewport dimensions, locale, UA, and any device-emulation settings alongside the image if you will compare it later.
AdsBot strings are for ad checks
Google Ads Help gives desktop and mobile AdsBot examples for testing ad destinations. The desktop example is AdsBot-Google (+http://www.google.com/adsbot.html). Its mobile example is Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 6.0.1; Nexus 5X Build/MMB29P) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/W.X.Y.Z Mobile Safari/537.36 (compatible; AdsBot-Google-Mobile; +http://www.google.com/mobile/adsbot.html). These identify AdsBot in the ad-checking context; do not describe them as Google Search crawler identities or assume that using one makes the resulting SERP canonical.

Automate the capture with Puppeteer
Puppeteer controls Chrome or Firefox and can save full-page or element screenshots. The example below sets the viewport and UA before navigation, requests a Google search URL, waits for the page’s load event, then saves a full-page PNG. It is a general browser-automation pattern, not a tested or guaranteed Google-specific script. Google may show consent screens, challenges, or other content instead of results.

A UA string is a request header identifying the requesting application, operating system, vendor, or version. Chrome has reduced information in the UA string to limit passive identification; sites can also receive User-Agent Client Hints (UA-CH). Changing only the text therefore may not reproduce all request headers or a device’s rendering behavior. For a mobile-oriented comparison, set a mobile viewport and device emulation as well as the UA, and state what you configured. Chrome’s guidance explains User-Agent reduction and UA-CH.

Interpret and preserve the screenshot carefully
- It is a session record: the image shows what that browser rendered at that time, for that query and context. It does not establish that every searcher sees the same results or that a particular result position is universal.
- Keep comparison metadata: retain the query, timestamp, browser/version, viewport, locale, UA, emulation settings, and headful/headless mode with each capture.
- Do not overstate what UA changes do: an override changes the browser’s UA identification, but does not by itself make the browser identical to a crawler or fully emulate a device.
- Present authentic images accurately: Google’s Search screenshot guidelines say not to alter the interface or manufacture, remove, or alter autocomplete suggestions or results in screenshots presented as Google Search. Label explanatory overlays clearly. The guidelines also say not to embed, frame, mirror, or duplicate Google Search in an application; they point to Programmable Search Engine for an approved integration option. This summarizes brand-use guidance, not a complete legal analysis.
Troubleshooting
The page still looks like the default browser or device
Confirm Use browser default is cleared and that the override was set before the request. If the goal is mobile rendering, a mobile UA alone is insufficient: configure device emulation and viewport, and consider UA-CH.
Puppeteer times out waiting for network idle
Google pages may keep network activity open, so a network-idle condition can fail to arrive. If that happens, use a less restrictive navigation condition such as domcontentloaded, then wait for a short, explicit delay before taking the screenshot. Treat the delay as a capture choice, not proof that every result element has finished loading.

The image shows a consent screen, challenge, or unexpected page
Save what the browser actually displayed and note the state. A custom UA is not a guarantee against challenges or consent screens, and the capture should not be presented as a normal results page if it is not one.
Two captures differ even though the UA matches
Compare query spelling, time, locale, viewport, browser version, device settings, cache state, and headful/headless mode. A matching UA string does not make two sessions identical, and a screenshot cannot prove a universal ranking.
