Use Playwright’s non-persistent browser.newContext() to create an isolated, incognito-like session, set the viewport, open Google Search, and save the page with page.screenshot(). Close the context when you are done. This avoids reusing a normal browser profile; it does not make the search anonymous or guarantee identical results across captures.
Capture a Google SERP in a fresh Playwright context
The essential sequence is to launch a browser, create a new context, open a page in that context, navigate to a Google Search URL, take the screenshot, then close the context and browser. Playwright’s documentation calls a new non-persistent context an “incognito browser context.” It does not persist browsing data to disk like a persistent user-data profile. })();Install Playwright in your project and install its browser binaries before running the script. The example uses CommonJS and Chromium. The screenshot file extension determines the image format; .png produces a PNG. Playwright’s API also supports full-page capture with fullPage: true when you need the full document rather than the visible viewport.
Choose the viewport and capture scope
Set viewport in browser.newContext() before navigation when screenshot dimensions and responsive layout matter. Many sites respond to viewport changes, and Playwright recommends setting it before navigation for phone layouts. For a mobile SERP, use the dimensions you want to inspect, then retain those same dimensions for each comparison.

- Viewport screenshot: the default capture shows what is visible in the page viewport.
- Full-page screenshot: pass
{ fullPage: true }to capture the full page height. Google results and page content can be dynamic, so this is not a guarantee that every item has loaded or that the resulting image will be identical on another run.
Playwright’s screenshot options also include page styling. Use styling only for legitimate presentation needs; do not conceal or alter Google results, suggestions, or interface elements in a screenshot intended to depict Search accurately.
What “incognito” does—and does not—mean here
A fresh non-persistent context gives the page a separate browser session instead of reusing cookies and other state from a regular profile. It is useful for clean-session testing, but it is not a promise of anonymity, location neutrality, or repeatable rankings. Google’s results and interface are dynamic, and the official documentation cited here does not establish that a new context makes results identical across people or times.

If you are comparing captures, record the query, capture time, locale or region settings if you explicitly configure them, viewport, browser engine and version, and relevant context configuration. Treat each image as an observation from that specific setup.

Google’s Search screenshot guidance says to show Search in positive or neutral ways and as it actually looks and functions. It also says not to alter the interface or manufacture, remove, or alter autocomplete terms or search results. Google and the Google logo are trademarks of Google LLC. Google says permission is not required for Search or results screenshots in print for educational or instructional purposes, such as textbooks, journals, magazines, how-to books, and other informative material. That is not a blanket permission for websites, promotional use, or third-party material shown in results. Third-party content may require permission from its owner, and Google says Search use in advertisements requires its approval.

Troubleshooting
- The browser will not launch: install Playwright’s browser binaries for the package you installed, then rerun the script. A missing browser executable is a setup issue rather than a Google Search response.
- The screenshot is the wrong size: set the desired
viewportinnewContext()before navigating; page layout can react to viewport dimensions. - The screenshot is blank or incomplete: check that navigation completed and that the requested URL is valid. Google pages can change dynamically, so a capture at one moment may not include content that appears later.
- Results differ between runs: preserve and record the query, time, viewport, engine/version, and explicit locale or region configuration. A new context isolates browser state but does not make Google’s results reproducible.
- You are reusing prior session state: create a fresh non-persistent context rather than launching with a persistent user-data profile when the goal is incognito-like isolation.
