Use a screenshot when you need an image of a webpage as it appears on screen; use print preview to make a paginated paper copy or save a PDF. For a whole-page image, choose a browser’s full-page capture rather than its visible-area option. For paper or PDF, open the browser’s print controls and inspect the preview before you print or save.
Screenshot, print, or PDF: choose the right output
These options solve different problems. A screenshot is an image: it is useful for keeping a visual record, capturing a region, or pasting a page into another app. A full-page screenshot extends beyond the portion currently on screen. A printed page or PDF is paginated, so page breaks, margins, and print settings affect the result.
| Goal | Choose | Check before relying on it |
|---|---|---|
| Save how a page or selected area looks | Visible-area, region, or full-page screenshot | Confirm you chose full-page if you need content below the fold. |
| Share or keep a document that can later be printed | Print to PDF | Review page breaks, margins, and whether backgrounds appear. |
| Get a paper copy | Browser print controls and a printer | Check the destination, page range, and preview before printing. |
A printer is only necessary if you want paper. Saving as PDF is a browser-based alternative, and you can print that file later if you have access to a printer.
How do I take a screenshot of an entire webpage?
First try the browser’s built-in full-page capture, if available. It is usually more direct than manually stitching together several screen images. If you only need the visible screen or a particular section, select the visible-area or region option instead.

Microsoft Edge: capture the full page or a region
- Open the webpage in Edge.
- Open Screenshot from the right-click menu, the Edge menu or settings, or press Ctrl+Shift+S.
- Choose Capture full page for the entire webpage. Choose an area-selection option if you need only part of it.
- Review the capture. Edge lets you mark it up, copy it, or save it.
Microsoft Edge describes the feature this way: “Capture an entire webpage in a single screenshot—even the parts you would have to scroll to see.” Microsoft cautions that functionality may vary by device type, market, and browser version, so the menu or availability can differ.
Firefox: choose full page or visible area
- Open the page, then right-click an empty part of it and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on Mac.
- Choose Save full page for the whole webpage or Save visible for what is currently on screen.
- To capture a specific part, select a region or one of Firefox’s automatically highlighted page parts.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Mozilla Support says Firefox can capture visible parts or full webpages and lets you copy or save the resulting images. Its screenshots help page showed a last-updated date of June 15, 2026; controls may change in later versions.
Chrome: use DevTools for a full-size image
Chrome’s full-size screenshot route is in Developer Tools, not a one-click toolbar capture. It is a technical option if you specifically need an image extending beyond the visible viewport.

Use Firefox or Edge’s built-in screenshot interface instead if you prefer a simpler browser workflow; the Chrome method requires working in DevTools.

iPhone: full-page screenshots
Apple’s iPhone User Guide documents screenshots that can extend beyond the screen and gives a full Safari webpage as an example. The documented information establishes that the capability exists, but does not establish one set of taps that applies to every iOS version. Look for the full-page option in the screenshot controls on your device; if it is not offered for the page or version you are using, capture the visible area or use another supported method.
Technical Firefox capture with the Web Console
Firefox’s Web Console provides a :screenshot helper for technical users. It supports full-page capture, a delay, device-pixel-ratio settings, a filename, and a CSS selector to capture an element. Use it when you need those controls; for a routine capture, Firefox’s Screenshot interface is easier. Consult Mozilla’s current Developer Tools documentation for the precise command syntax supported by your installed version.

How do I print a webpage or save it as a PDF?
Print preview is the place to choose the destination and inspect pagination. A PDF is still paginated, unlike a long screenshot, but it avoids sending the job to a physical printer.
Chrome on a computer: print or save as PDF
- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print dialog, choose the printer as the destination if you want paper. To make a file, choose Save as PDF.
- Set the available print options and inspect the preview for missing content, awkward page breaks, or clipped margins.
- Print, or save the PDF to your chosen location.
Chrome Help directs users to follow the printer manufacturer’s instructions for printer setup. If the printer is not listed or ready, saving as PDF remains an option; setup details depend on the printer and computer.

Edge: inspect page range, margins, and backgrounds
- Open the page and choose Print from the Edge menu, or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on Mac.
- Choose a printer or PDF destination, then set the page range and margins as needed.
- Decide whether to include headers and footers. If page colors or background images matter, enable Background graphics.
- Inspect the preview for missing backgrounds, unwanted page breaks, or clipped content before printing or saving.
Microsoft Support notes, “You can include background graphics when you print a web page.” If the page is crowded with navigation or ads, try Immersive Reader and then print, if it is available for that site. Microsoft says Immersive Reader is not available on all sites. Edge also offers a system print dialog if you need it.

Troubleshooting: fix the most common capture and print problems
The screenshot shows only what was on screen
Choose the browser’s full-page option. In Firefox, use Save full page, not Save visible; in Edge choose Capture full page. In Chrome, use DevTools’ Capture a full size screenshot rather than an ordinary screen capture.
The Edge preview leaves out colors or background images
Enable Background graphics in Edge’s print controls and inspect the preview again. This setting affects print output; it does not change what a screenshot captures.
The printed page includes menus, ads, or other clutter
Try Edge’s Immersive Reader before printing if the site supports it. It is not available for every website, so check the resulting preview rather than assuming the page will be simplified.

The browser’s menu or shortcut does not match these steps
Check the device, operating system, and browser version. Edge explicitly notes that Screenshot functionality can vary by device type, market, and version. If a shortcut is intercepted by another app or does not work, open the browser menu and look for the feature there.
The PDF or paper copy has awkward breaks or clipped content
Return to print preview before producing the final copy. Adjust the page range or margins, and check whether headers and footers or background graphics suit the page. If a long, continuous visual record matters more than page layout, use a full-page screenshot instead.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a repeatable screenshot from code rather than a manual browser capture, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. The call below saves a screenshot of the example URL as a WebP file. Replace the target URL with the page you need and set your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for the request options.
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor.
