Capture a protected page with Playwright
This Node.js example uses Playwright’s Chromium browser. Set the two environment variables before running it; the code does not put credentials in the source file.

}Replace the example URL, origin, and readiness selector with values for your site. The main selector is illustrative: choose an element that appears only when the content you need is ready. The finally block closes the browser even if navigation or capture fails.
Configure credentials before navigation
httpCredentials can be configured on a BrowserContext; Playwright also documents credential configuration at the browser type level. Context-level configuration makes the credential scope explicit for pages created from that context. The optional origin is a scheme, host, and port, for example https://example.com. An array can be used to configure different credentials for different origins. See the BrowserContext API and BrowserType API for details applicable to your installed version.

Do not confuse HTTP Basic Authentication with application login state stored in cookies or local storage. If the server challenges the request with Basic Authentication, continue to configure HTTP credentials for that origin; saved browser storage state does not necessarily satisfy that challenge.
Choose the screenshot size and readiness check
Wait for the content, not just navigation
A successful page.goto() does not prove that the application has rendered the exact content you want. Wait for a page-specific element, state, or other reliable condition before capture. A title check alone may not be enough. The right selector depends on the page; use one that represents the content, not an arbitrary delay unless timing is the only workable signal.

Viewport or full page
By default, page.screenshot() captures the current viewport. Set fullPage: true to capture the full scrollable page. The output in the example is PNG, Playwright’s documented default. Consult the Page API for screenshot options and supported output formats.
Keep authentication material out of the repository
- Read credentials from environment variables or an appropriate secret manager; do not commit them in source or configuration files.
- If you save reusable browser authentication state, treat the file as a secret: it may contain cookies or headers that can impersonate a user.
- Playwright’s authentication guide recommends storing state under
playwright/.authand adding that directory to.gitignore. Do not commit the saved state. - Scope HTTP credentials to the required origin when feasible. If parallel tests share an account and change server-side state, use separate accounts rather than assuming shared state is safe.

Troubleshooting
- The page still shows an authentication prompt or an unauthorized response: verify the username and password, and make sure
originmatches the protected URL’s scheme, host, and port. Confirm that the request is actually protected by HTTP Basic Authentication rather than a separate application login. - The screenshot is blank or misses page content: wait for a selector or state that proves the relevant content has appeared. Navigation completion by itself may be too early for client-rendered content.
- The capture stops at the visible viewport: pass
fullPage: trueif you need the complete scrollable document. - The credentials are undefined: set
BASIC_AUTH_USERNAMEandBASIC_AUTH_PASSWORDin the process environment before running the script. - A saved state file does not authenticate the request: storage state and HTTP Basic Authentication are different mechanisms. Configure
httpCredentialsfor the challenged origin.

Yes. Playwright’s BrowserContext API documents an array for configuring different credentials for different origins; consult the API reference for the installed version.

Does Playwright save a screenshot as PNG by default?
Yes. PNG is the documented default for `page.screenshot()`.
