To save a webpage from top to bottom as one image on a Mac, use Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool: open the page, press Command+Shift+S, choose Save full page, then download the PNG or copy it. Chrome can also capture a full page through DevTools. Safari’s documented whole-page save options create a Web Archive or page source—not a long screenshot image.
What counts as a whole-page screenshot?
A normal Mac screen capture records the visible screen area. A full-page screenshot captures the webpage beyond the current viewport, including content farther down the scrollable page, and combines it into a single image. That is different from selecting a rectangular area, printing a page to PDF, or saving a webpage so it can be reopened later.
For the simplest documented built-in image workflow, use Firefox. Chrome offers a DevTools route if you already use Chrome. Safari’s documented Save As options are useful for preserving or inspecting a page, but they do not produce the long PNG image many people mean by “full-page screenshot.”
Capture a full page in Firefox
Firefox’s screenshot interface is the most direct built-in method in this guide. Mozilla documents downloading the full-page capture as a PNG or copying it to the clipboard.

- Open the webpage in Firefox and wait for the content you need to appear.
- Open the screenshot interface in either of these ways: right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or press Command+Shift+S.
- Select Save full page in the upper-right corner of the screenshot interface.
- Choose Download to save the PNG in Firefox’s download folder, or choose Copy to put the image on the clipboard.
If you only need what is currently on screen, choose the visible-area option instead. Firefox also supports capturing a selected region. Those choices are useful, but neither is the same as including the complete scrollable page.
Use Firefox DevTools instead
Firefox has a screenshot button for the entire page in its Developer Tools. If that button is not visible, open DevTools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under the available toolbox buttons. Then use that button to capture the page. For most one-off captures, the regular Take Screenshot interface takes fewer setup steps.
Capture a full page in Chrome
Chrome’s full-page capture is available through DevTools. The command label can vary between Chrome versions, so use the Command Menu to find the available full-page screenshot command rather than relying on a fixed menu path.

- Open the webpage in Chrome.
- Open DevTools. On a Mac, the usual shortcut is Command+Option+I; you can also open DevTools from Chrome’s View > Developer menu.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu and search for screenshot.
- Choose the command for a full-page screenshot, then save the resulting image when Chrome offers it.
Do not confuse a full-page command with Capture area screenshot. Google’s Command Menu documentation describes that command as an area capture: it records a selected part of the page, not the complete scrollable page. If the results differ from these steps, search the Command Menu for “screenshot” and check the command descriptions shown by your installed Chrome version.

Apple’s Safari guide documents saving an entire webpage through File > Save As. The available formats include Web Archive and Page Source; neither is a long screenshot image.
- Web Archive: saves the webpage and its graphics so you can retain a local copy. Whether linked destination pages remain available depends on those pages being available when you visit them.
- Page Source: saves the page’s HTML source. It is intended for inspecting or retaining code, not for viewing a visual capture.
Apple also documents enabling Safari’s developer tools through Safari > Settings > Advanced > Show features for web developers. That setting exposes developer features; it does not turn Safari’s documented Save As options into a full-page PNG workflow. If you need a full-page image and want to stay with built-in browser tools, use Firefox or Chrome instead.

Choose the right output for the job

Get a cleaner capture of a long or dynamic page
Before taking the screenshot, scroll through the page if important sections load only when they enter view. Pages with lazy-loaded images or other delayed content may otherwise show empty spaces or missing material in the capture. Allow the page to finish loading, dismiss dialogs that cover the content, and confirm that the result includes the sections you need.
- Sticky headers or floating controls: these may appear in the image or cover page content. If the result is cluttered, try a browser that captures the page cleanly or use a capture tool that can hide selected elements.
- Very long pages: the output can be large, and a full-page image may be harder to read or share than a PDF or a set of smaller captures. Choose the format based on how the recipient will use it.
- Interactive content: a screenshot records a visual state, not a working webpage. Expand the sections or load the content you need before capture.
- Private or authenticated pages: browser-based capture uses the page open in your browser. Check the resulting file before sharing it; it may contain account details or other information visible on the page.

Troubleshooting
The screenshot shortcut does nothing
In Firefox, use the page context menu and select Take Screenshot to open the same interface. If the shortcut is intercepted or unavailable, check Firefox’s current keyboard shortcuts and use the menu route. In Chrome, use DevTools’ Command Menu rather than expecting the Firefox shortcut to work.
Chrome offers an area capture but not a full-page result
You may have selected Capture area screenshot. Reopen the Command Menu, search for “screenshot,” and select the full-page command available in your Chrome version. The area command captures only a selection.
The image has blank spaces or misses content
Wait for loading to finish and scroll down the page before capturing, especially when images or sections load on demand. Expand any collapsed sections you want included and take another capture after the page has settled.

Safari saved a file, but it is not an image
That is expected when using Safari’s documented whole-page save options. Web Archive and Page Source are webpage formats, not full-page screenshot images. For an image, use Firefox’s screenshot interface or Chrome DevTools.
The result is difficult to read or share
A single tall image can become unwieldy for a long page. If recipients need to read or print it, choose a PDF workflow instead. If they need an image, consider capturing only the relevant area or splitting the page into smaller captures.

Does a full-page screenshot include content below the fold?
Yes. That is the distinction between a full-page capture and a standard screen or viewport capture.
Do I need a browser extension?
No. Firefox and Chrome provide built-in full-page capture paths. Extensions are optional; GoFullPage is one listing in the Chrome Web Store.
Can I use a screenshot as an editable webpage?
No. An image is a visual record, not editable page content. For a saved webpage in Safari, use Web Archive or Page Source instead.
