To screenshot a page behind a login, sign in through the site’s authorized workflow in a Playwright browser context, wait until a reliable sign-in signal appears, open the protected URL, then capture the viewport or the full page. For repeat runs, save the context’s storageState and load it into a new context. Treat that state file like a password: it can contain credentials that let someone impersonate the account.
Sign in, verify access, and capture the page
This TypeScript example uses the site’s normal login form. Replace the example URLs, labels, and authenticated control with those used by the site you are authorized to access. The example assumes the project has Playwright Test installed and that TEST_EMAIL and TEST_PASSWORD are set in the environment.

}The login selectors and success condition are examples, not a tested recipe for a particular site. Choose a meaningful signal such as a signed-in account control or the final post-login URL. Do not rely on a fixed delay: redirects and authentication may take different amounts of time. Playwright locators auto-wait and retry as the page changes (Playwright locator guidance).
Use the site’s intended sign-in flow or supported authentication API, and capture only pages you are authorized to access. The general Playwright guidance does not establish how a specific site handles SSO, MFA, CAPTCHA, or other access controls.

Choose the screenshot scope
Playwright’s screenshot guide supports file capture at several scopes. Use the option that matches what you need:
- Visible viewport:

For visual regression tests, toHaveScreenshot() is an assertion that waits for consecutive stable screenshots before comparing against an expectation. It is not needed for a straightforward file capture (PageAssertions API).

Reuse an authenticated session on later runs
When a workflow needs to sign in repeatedly, save the browser context’s storage state after a successful login. A later context can load that state rather than repeating the UI steps. The Playwright authentication guide recommends keeping the file in a project-local playwright/.auth directory and adding that directory to .gitignore.

State files can contain sensitive cookies and headers capable of impersonating the account. Keep them out of source control, restrict access, and do not share them as ordinary test artifacts. Playwright documents that storageState handles cookies and local storage, and supports IndexedDB when requested in supported API versions. It does not directly persist sessionStorage; if the application depends on it, the guide describes reading it from the page and injecting it with context.addInitScript() for the matching hostname. See the BrowserContext API for context behavior.

The protected URL returns to the login page
- Check that the login success condition genuinely indicates an authenticated session before navigating.
- The saved session may have expired; repeat the authorized login and save fresh state.
- If the application relies on
sessionStorage, it will not be restored bystorageStatealone. Use the documented initialization workaround only if the application requires it. - A site-specific identity flow may need steps beyond this general example; follow the site’s supported sign-in process.
The screenshot is blank or missing content
- Confirm the page is authenticated and has reached the intended URL before capture.
- Wait for a meaningful page signal—such as a target locator becoming visible—rather than adding an arbitrary sleep.
- For content below the fold, use
fullPage: true; for a single component, verify the locator matches the intended element.
Login requires HTTP authentication
HTTP authentication is different from filling in a normal web login form. For that case, configure credentials on the browser context with setHTTPCredentials(), as documented in the BrowserContext API.

These flows vary by site, and the general Playwright documentation does not establish a universal bypass or recipe. Use the target site’s authorized workflow and policy; do not attempt to circumvent its access controls.
