Set the website’s viewport in Safari Responsive Design Mode or Chrome DevTools before capturing it. A Mac screenshot shortcut captures pixels on your screen; it does not set the browser’s layout dimensions. For a repeatable capture, enter the requested width and height in the browser’s responsive tool, then choose a visible-viewport or full-page screenshot as needed.
Viewport size is not screenshot pixel size
A viewport is the browser area used to lay out a webpage. It is not the full browser window: browser controls and the surrounding Mac display are outside it. A screenshot made by selecting a screen region may include some or all of that surrounding area, so its output dimensions are not automatically the page’s viewport dimensions.

Confirm the unit in the design brief. Chrome’s responsive Device Mode uses CSS pixels for custom dimensions. Safari describes the effective viewport size in screen points and also offers a display pixel ratio setting. Those units and a screenshot’s physical output pixels are not interchangeable without considering the display scale.

Set a specific viewport in Safari
- Show the Develop menu if needed. In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Advanced and enable “Show features for web developers.” Apple documents the developer feature in its Develop menu documentation.
- Open the target page and enter Responsive Design Mode. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode, or press Control-Command-R. See Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation.
- Set the dimensions. Pick a preset or click the displayed width or height and enter the target size. Check whether the brief calls for screen points or another unit; adjust the displayed pixel ratio if the preview requires it.
- Capture the page view. Use Shift-Command-4 and drag over the browser content, or press Shift-Command-4 followed by Space and click the browser window. Window capture includes the window frame and may include its shadow; hold Option while clicking to omit the shadow.
Safari’s responsive presets are previews, not guarantees of identical behavior on physical devices. Browser address bars, the on-screen keyboard, and device-specific form behavior can affect real-device results. Apple recommends Simulator when a more accurate device preview is needed.
Set a specific viewport in Chrome
- Open DevTools and turn on the Device Toolbar.
- Choose Responsive mode in the device selector, then enter the requested width and height. Chrome documents these custom dimensions as CSS pixels.
- Choose the capture scope. Open the Device Toolbar’s More options menu and select “Capture screenshot” for the current viewport or “Capture a full size screenshot” for the full page.
Chrome Device Mode simulates device behavior in a desktop browser; it does not run the site on a physical phone or reproduce every device-specific behavior. Use an actual device or an appropriate simulator when that distinction matters. Steps and labels are documented in Google’s Simulate mobile devices with device mode guide.

Use macOS capture shortcuts when you need a screen or window image
- Shift-Command-3: capture the entire screen.
- Shift-Command-4: drag to select a screen region. Press Space to move the selection without resizing it.
- Shift-Command-4, then Space: capture a window or menu. Hold Option while clicking a window to omit its shadow.
- Shift-Command-5: open the Screenshot interface, where you can choose a capture mode, save location, and timer. Apple says this interface is available on macOS Mojave 10.14 or later.
If the goal is a particular webpage viewport, set the responsive dimensions first and then capture the browser content. If you only need a normal screen, window, or selection capture, the native shortcuts are sufficient. Apple documents the shortcuts and notes that some apps, such as Apple TV, may not allow window screenshots; that limitation is unlikely to affect an ordinary browser page. Screenshot options and formats can vary by macOS version and supported hardware. Apple’s current page describes SDR/PNG and HDR/HEIF options for compatible Macs running macOS Tahoe 26 or later. See Take a screenshot on Mac.
Choose the workflow that matches the deliverable
| Need | Use | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Safari-specific responsive preview | Safari Responsive Design Mode | Effective dimensions are shown in screen points; set the pixel ratio if relevant. |
| Custom CSS-pixel dimensions or full-page capture | Chrome DevTools Device Mode | Enter CSS-pixel dimensions and choose viewport or full-size capture. |
| A quick image of the screen, a region, or a browser window | macOS Screenshot shortcuts or Screenshot interface | These capture the screen/window bounds, not a specified web viewport by themselves. |
| Confidence in actual mobile-device behavior | Simulator or physical-device check | Desktop browser emulation cannot reproduce every device behavior. |
Troubleshooting viewport screenshots
- The image is the wrong size. Check that dimensions were entered in the responsive tool, not inferred from the Mac screen selection. Confirm whether the brief specifies CSS pixels, screen points, or output pixels.
- The browser chrome is in the image. Use a content-area selection or Chrome’s “Capture screenshot” command rather than capturing the entire browser window.
- The page is cut off below the fold. Use Chrome’s “Capture a full size screenshot” for full-page output; a viewport capture only covers the visible area.
- Safari has no Develop menu. Enable “Show features for web developers” in Safari > Settings > Advanced, then reopen the Develop menu.
- The preview differs from a phone. Treat responsive mode as an approximation. Validate on Simulator or a physical device for behaviors such as browser bars, keyboard effects, and device-specific form controls.
- A window capture is unavailable. Some applications restrict window screenshots. For a browser page, try selecting a screen region or use the browser’s developer-tool capture.
Or skip the browser setup
