How to Screenshot a Website in Chrome on Ubuntu from a Windows PC

Press Print in Ubuntu to capture the visible Chrome window, screen, or selection. For a full-page image, try Chrome DevTools; remote Ubuntu setups need a connection first.

For a screenshot of the Chrome window or a selected part of the page, use Ubuntu’s built-in screenshot overlay: focus Chrome and press Print. Choose a window, screen, or selection, then capture it. For a full webpage—including content below the visible screen—use Chrome DevTools’ “capture full size screenshot” command if it is available in your Chrome build. The steps below assume you can use the Ubuntu desktop; if Ubuntu is on a separate computer, connect to it first.

Take a screenshot of the visible Chrome page in Ubuntu

  1. In Ubuntu, open the page in Chrome and bring the Chrome window to the front.
  2. Press Print on the Ubuntu keyboard. Ubuntu’s screenshot overlay opens with options for a selection, the screen, or a window. Choose Window to capture Chrome without unrelated desktop areas, or Selection to capture only part of the browser. Choose the screen option if you want everything visible on the display. Ubuntu’s screenshot documentation describes these options.
  3. Complete the capture in the overlay. Ubuntu saves the image in Pictures/Screenshots inside your home folder, with a filename beginning “Screenshot” followed by the date and time. It also copies the image to the clipboard, so you can paste it into an editor or message.

This captures rendered pixels that are currently visible in the chosen window, screen, or region. It does not automatically include webpage content below the fold.

Chrome’s DevTools has a full-size screenshot command in some builds. A Chrome Community answer posted March 6, 2025 describes this sequence; because it is community guidance rather than an official guarantee, the command may not appear in every version of Chrome.

  1. With the target page open, press Ctrl+Shift+I to open DevTools. You can also use F12. Google’s shortcut reference lists F12 for Developer Tools on Windows and Linux. Chrome keyboard shortcuts
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open the DevTools command menu.
  3. Search for capture full size screenshot and select that command if it is offered. Chrome captures a full-page image rather than only the visible viewport.

If the command is missing, do not assume that a normal Ubuntu desktop screenshot will capture the whole page: it captures only the visible display area. You can instead use Chrome’s print flow when a document is suitable: press Ctrl+P, choose a destination and print settings, then save or print. That produces a PDF or printed document, not an image screenshot. The official shortcut reference confirms Ctrl+P opens print options.

If Ubuntu is on a separate computer

If you mean that the Windows PC is controlling a different Ubuntu computer, first connect to the Ubuntu desktop. Google documents Chrome Remote Desktop access to Linux hosts: open remotedesktop.google.com/access, select the Ubuntu computer, and enter its PIN. Google says remote sessions are fully encrypted. Once connected, use the screenshot controls in the Ubuntu session.

Keyboard forwarding can depend on the remote client and session; Google’s instructions do not specifically promise that pressing the Windows keyboard’s Print Screen key will open Ubuntu’s screenshot overlay. If it does not, use Ubuntu’s system-menu screenshot control or any capture control provided by the remote desktop interface. A Windows screenshot of the remote-client window is different: it may include the client’s borders and controls, or capture only the currently visible remote viewport.
