1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo capture the same website at different device pixel ratios (DPRs), keep the CSS viewport width and height fixed, change only the emulated DPR, and use the same screenshot scale and capture scope each time. In Chrome DevTools, set DPR in Device mode; in Playwright, set deviceScaleFactor on the browser context and choose whether the saved image uses CSS or device pixels.
What DPR changes in a screenshot
DPR is the ratio of physical display pixels to CSS pixels, and browsers expose it as window.devicePixelRatio. At DPR 1, one device pixel maps to one CSS pixel; at DPR 2, two device pixels map to each CSS pixel in each dimension. DPR describes rendering density, not the CSS viewport width. MDN explains devicePixelRatio.
For a fixed CSS viewport, a device-pixel screenshot will generally scale its width and height by the DPR; its pixel area therefore grows roughly with the square of DPR. This is a dimensional guide, not a guarantee of exact image bounds: browser implementation, clipping, full-page capture and output handling can affect the final dimensions.
Viewport size and DPR are separate controls. Keep both in your capture notes: changing viewport width can change responsive layout, while changing DPR changes rendering density and, when saved at device scale, output dimensions. Page zoom can also change devicePixelRatio; pinch zoom does not. A window moved between displays with different pixel densities may also report a different DPR. For repeatable tests, avoid accidental zoom or display-scale changes and configure emulated DPR explicitly.

Capture different DPRs in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools and enable the Device toolbar.
- Choose Responsive or a device preset. For comparisons, enter the same viewport width and height for every run.
- Open More options, choose Add device pixel ratio, then select the DPR in the toolbar.
- For the visible viewport, choose More options > Capture screenshot. For the full scrollable page, choose Capture a full size screenshot.
- Repeat with a different DPR, leaving viewport dimensions, page state and capture scope unchanged.
Chrome describes Device mode as “the name for a collection of features in Chrome DevTools that help you simulate mobile devices.” See the Chrome DevTools Device Mode guide. Device emulation is useful for layout checks, but it does not reproduce every behavior of a physical mobile device. Test on real hardware when device-specific behavior matters.
Automate DPR captures with Playwright
Set the context before navigating so the page starts rendering with the intended viewport and device scale factor. This TypeScript pattern captures device-pixel output, CSS-pixel output, and a full-page device-pixel image:
const context = await browser.newContext({
viewport: { width: 390, height: 844 },
deviceScaleFactor: 2,
});
const page = await context.newPage();
await page.goto(url);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-dpr2.png', scale: 'device' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-css-pixels.png', scale: 'css' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page-full.png', fullPage: true, scale: 'device' });
Here, deviceScaleFactor emulates the rendering density. The screenshot scale option independently selects output pixels: 'device' uses device pixels, while 'css' produces one screenshot pixel per CSS pixel. To compare DPRs, hold viewport dimensions, screenshot scale and scope constant; change only deviceScaleFactor. Playwright documents screenshots, full-page capture, element capture, output formats and screenshot options.

For example, run the same context setup once with deviceScaleFactor: 1 and again with deviceScaleFactor: 2. If both captures use scale: 'device', the second image will generally have more pixels in each dimension. If both use scale: 'css', the output stays at CSS-pixel scale; DPR still affects emulated rendering characteristics.
Choose the capture scope and stabilize the page
- Viewport: captures only what is visible in the current viewport.
- Full page: captures content extending beyond the viewport. Lazy-loaded images or other scroll-triggered content may need a deliberate readiness strategy before capture.
- Element: target a particular element when the comparison concerns one component rather than the page.
Use a wait condition that matches the site. A navigation event or network-idle condition alone does not guarantee that lazy content, animations or user-specific content is ready. Playwright also supports animation controls and injected styles to stabilize certain dynamic elements.
Alternative: capture with Puppeteer
Puppeteer provides Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a selected element. Its guide demonstrates navigation with a network-idle wait, but that wait is not a universal readiness guarantee for every site. Choose the wait condition and any DPR or emulation settings to suit your test, and keep them consistent across runs. See the Puppeteer screenshot guide.

Keep comparisons reproducible
For visual regression or side-by-side inspection, record and hold constant the conditions that are not under test:
- Browser and version, operating system and fonts.
- Viewport width and height, DPR or device scale factor, and page zoom.
- Screenshot output scale (
cssordevice) and scope (viewport, full page or element). - Page state, readiness condition and animation behavior.
Rendered screenshots can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source and headless mode. Playwright notes these sources of variation in its visual comparisons documentation. Use the same browser and host environment as your baseline where possible. If testing only sharpness or device-pixel output, keep viewport and capture scale fixed while varying DPR. If testing responsive layout, change viewport width deliberately and record DPR separately.

The saved image is not twice as wide at DPR 2
Check whether the screenshot uses CSS scale or device scale. CSS-scale output is one pixel per CSS pixel, so its dimensions do not grow with DPR in the same way device-scale output does. Also confirm that the emulated DPR changed, the viewport stayed fixed, and the capture was not clipped.

A full-page capture is missing content
Some pages load images or other content only as the page scrolls. Wait for or trigger that content according to the site’s behavior before capturing. A full-page option captures beyond the viewport, but does not itself guarantee every deferred resource is ready.
Repeated screenshots differ despite matching settings
Dynamic content, animations, fonts, browser changes or host-environment differences may be responsible. Stabilize the page state and animations, and run comparisons in the same browser and host environment as the baseline. Record headless mode and relevant settings as well.
Emulation does not match a real phone
Device mode and automated browser emulation approximate device behavior. If the result depends on hardware or mobile-specific behavior, verify it on the actual device rather than treating an emulated screenshot as definitive.

What does DPR 2 mean for a screenshot?
It means two device pixels map to each CSS pixel in each dimension. A device-scale capture of a fixed CSS viewport will generally have twice the width and height of a DPR 1 capture.
Should I use CSS or device screenshot scale?
Use device scale when you need output at the emulated device-pixel density; use CSS scale when you want one saved image pixel per CSS pixel.
Does changing DPR change responsive breakpoints?
DPR is separate from CSS viewport dimensions. Keep viewport width fixed to avoid changing responsive layout while comparing DPR.
