How to Screenshot a Webpage with Firefox Developer Tools

Use Firefox Developer Tools to capture an entire page, a single Inspector element, or the visible viewport, with filename, delay, DPR, and clipboard options in the Web Console.

Firefox has built-in ways to capture a full webpage, a single element, or just the visible viewport. For a full-page image, enable the screenshot button in Developer Tools or run :screenshot page.png --fullpage in the Web Console. Use the Inspector’s Screenshot Node command for one element.

Open Firefox Developer Tools

Open Tools > Web Developer > Web Developer Tools, or use Ctrl+Shift+I or F12 on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Opt+I on macOS. Opened this way, Developer Tools target the active tab.

Capture a full webpage with the screenshot button

  1. Open Developer Tools, then open its settings.
  2. Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page. This button is not enabled by default.
  3. Click the screenshot button that appears in the toolbox. Firefox saves the image in its Downloads directory.

Capture one element in the Inspector

  1. Open the Inspector and locate the element in its HTML pane.
  2. Right-click the target node and choose Screenshot Node.

Firefox captures the selected node and saves the image to Downloads. For an element identified by a CSS selector instead, use the Web Console helper.

Use the Web Console for more capture options

In the Web Console, enter :screenshot. For example, this saves a full-page screenshot as a PNG:

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
:screenshot page.png --fullpage

Mozilla documents these options:

  • --fullpage includes webpage content beyond the current window bounds.
  • --selector "CSS selector" captures the element matched by a CSS selector.
  • --filename name.png sets the PNG filename.
  • --delay seconds waits before taking the screenshot, which can help capture a menu or hover state.
  • --dpr number sets the device-pixel ratio. Values above 1 produce a more zoomed-in image; values below 1 produce a more zoomed-out image.
  • --clipboard copies the screenshot to the clipboard. Unless you also use --file, this prevents saving a file.
  • --file forces file writing when another option, such as --clipboard, is active.

For full-page captures, the helper appends -fullpage to the filename. Reusing a filename overwrites the previous image, so use a different name for each capture you want to keep.

Capture the visible viewport

Open Responsive Design Mode and click its camera button to capture the viewport. Firefox saves the screenshot to its default download location. If Screenshot to clipboard is enabled in Developer Tools settings, the capture is also copied to the system clipboard.

Troubleshooting

  • The full-page screenshot button is missing: Open Developer Tools settings and enable Take a screenshot of the entire page under Available Toolbox Buttons.
  • A repeated screenshot replaced an earlier one: The console helper overwrites a file when the same filename is reused. Choose a new filename for the next capture.
  • The clipboard capture did not create a file: --clipboard prevents file saving unless --file is also present.
  • A delayed state was missed: Add --delay seconds to give a menu or hover state time to appear before capture.
  • The result is framed too close or too far: Adjust --dpr; values above 1 zoom in, while values below 1 zoom out.

Firefox version and interface notes

These directions reflect Mozilla’s documented labels and shortcuts. Developer Tools labels, layouts, and shortcuts can vary with Firefox releases or user configuration, so if a named control is not where expected, check the current Developer Tools settings. The screenshot button, Inspector node command, Web Console helper, and Responsive Design Mode camera serve different capture needs; choose the route by whether you need the whole page, one element, or the visible viewport.
