XPath does not pierce shadow roots, and closed-mode shadow roots are not supported.
Choose the screenshot scope
- Viewport:
page.screenshot()captures the currently visible page area. - Full page: set
fullPage: trueto capture the full scrollable document. - One element or component: call
screenshot()on a locator; the result is clipped to the matched element’s bounds.
A locator screenshot is not a substitute for a full-page screenshot: it captures one element, not the entire document. For a scrollable element, the screenshot includes only the content at its current scroll position.

Capture a page containing open Shadow DOM
In this TypeScript example, the text locator can match text inside an open shadow root. The example URL is illustrative; it is not a tested site. Install Playwright Test in your project before running it.

Playwright locators work with elements in Shadow DOM by default. Prefer user-facing locators such as getByRole() and getByText() when they express the intended target. A CSS locator may be useful when the page offers no suitable user-facing target, but deeply structural selectors can be brittle.
- Open shadow root: ordinary Playwright locators can traverse it.
- XPath: does not pierce shadow roots.
- Closed-mode shadow root: unsupported by Playwright locators; the documented locator guidance provides no workaround for reaching its internals.
If the component uses a closed root, consider asking the application owner to expose a testable public interface, or capture a broader page-level view instead of the inaccessible internals. Do not rely on an undocumented workaround.

Adjust or stabilize the capture
The page screenshot API has options for full-page capture, clipping, output type, background handling, masks, animation handling, and screenshot styling. Its style option accepts CSS that pierces Shadow DOM and inner frames, which can help hide or adjust dynamic elements during capture. Check selectors against the page’s actual component structure. For precise option names and supported values, consult the Playwright Page screenshot API; the documentation page is marked Next, so check the stable docs and your project’s Playwright version for version-sensitive details.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete content
- The locator times out: confirm that the component has rendered and that the target text or accessible name is correct. Waiting with
waitFor()helps when the target appears after navigation, but cannot expose content hidden in a closed root. - An XPath locator finds nothing: XPath does not cross a shadow boundary. Use a supported Playwright locator such as a role or text locator for an open root.
- The screenshot contains just one part of the page: a locator screenshot clips to the selected element. Use
page.screenshot({ fullPage: true })for the full scrollable document. - A scrollable component looks cut off: locator screenshots show only the element’s currently scrolled content. Scroll it to the desired position before capturing; use a page-level screenshot if the goal is the whole document.
- Content changes between captures: consider the screenshot
styleoption to hide or adjust volatile content, and verify that the CSS matches the actual shadow and frame structure.

Can I use XPath to find an element inside Shadow DOM?
No. Playwright’s XPath locators do not pierce shadow roots.
Does a locator screenshot capture an entire scrollable component?
No. It captures the matched element’s bounds and only the currently scrolled content of a scrollable element.
