Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →PowerShell can automate a browser, but the reviewed Microsoft documentation does not describe a built-in PowerShell cmdlet that renders and screenshots an arbitrary website. For a one-off capture, use Microsoft Edge’s Screenshot feature. For repeatable scripts, use a browser automation stack such as Selenium with a PowerShell module, checking that module’s current setup and screenshot commands before relying on them.
Choose the capture method for the job
| Need | Method | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| One-time screenshot of a page or PDF | Microsoft Edge Screenshot | Use the browser UI or Ctrl+Shift+S if the feature is permitted by your device’s policy. |
| Repeatable capture controlled by PowerShell | Selenium WebDriver with a PowerShell module | Choose a module version, then verify its installation instructions, browser and driver compatibility, and screenshot command. |
| Desktop automation that captures a page or selected element | Power Automate Desktop | Its browser action can save an image to a file or clipboard; it requires a browser instance. |
| Browser automation using Microsoft’s documented screenshot example | Playwright with Node.js | Microsoft’s example is JavaScript, not PowerShell. It can automate Edge, but is not a native PowerShell implementation. |
Take a one-off screenshot in Microsoft Edge
- Open the page or PDF in Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Edge’s menu and choose Screenshot. Microsoft renamed the former Web Capture feature Screenshot.
- Use the on-screen capture controls and save or copy the result as needed.
Microsoft’s policy documentation lists support on Windows starting with Edge version 87. If Screenshot is missing, an administrator may have disabled access through the WebCaptureEnabled policy. Managed-device policy can affect available capture paths; Microsoft notes that the separate DisableScreenshots policy blocks keyboard shortcuts and extension APIs, while Web Capture or methods outside the browser may still be possible.

Automate screenshots from PowerShell with Selenium
PowerShell can coordinate Selenium, but the exact setup and syntax depend on the Selenium-related module and its version. The PowerShell Gallery lists module options, including Selenium and PS.Selenium; a listing alone does not establish compatibility with your installed browser or provide a universal script. Check the selected module’s current documentation for installation, browser-driver setup, and its capture command before writing automation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSet up and validate your implementation
- Choose a maintained Selenium PowerShell module and confirm its supported PowerShell, browser, and driver versions in that module’s documentation.
- Install and configure the module and browser driver using those instructions. Do not assume that commands from one module or version apply to another.
- Start a WebDriver browser session from PowerShell, navigate to the target URL, and wait until the page content you need has rendered.
- Call the screenshot command documented for that module and save to an explicit file path.
- Confirm that the file exists and opens, then close the browser and driver in a cleanup step, including when navigation or capture fails.
Selenium’s documentation describes screenshots of the current browsing context. Treat the result as a viewport capture unless the specific browser, driver, and module document full-page behavior. Test long pages and dynamic content on your target sites; the sources do not establish that every Selenium route scrolls and stitches a complete document.

Module-specific cautions
- The PowerShell Gallery’s Selenium 3.0.0 source shows a PowerShell screenshot path using a WebDriver extension, but it is version-specific material, not a current universal recipe. It also warns that legacy, pre-Chromium Edge does not support headless mode.
- The PS.Selenium 1.48 listing includes
Get-ScreenShotandSave-ScreenShot. Confirm the package’s current requirements and compatibility before using those commands.
These distinctions matter: Selenium’s .NET screenshot examples and Playwright’s JavaScript example demonstrate browser capabilities, but neither should be presented as PowerShell syntax without a PowerShell integration that actually supports it.
Use Power Automate Desktop for a visual workflow
Power Automate Desktop documents a browser action called “Take screenshot of web page.” It can capture the entire currently displayed page or a specific UI element and send the image to a file or clipboard. For element capture, select the relevant UI element. Documented formats include BMP, EMF, EXIF, GIF, JPG, PNG, TIFF, and WMF. The action can fail if it cannot find the element, take the screenshot, or write to the selected destination.
Use Playwright with Node.js if that is your preferred automation stack
Microsoft’s Edge automation guide documents Playwright installation through Node.js and a JavaScript screenshot flow. Playwright can automate Edge because Edge is based on Chromium; its default browser launch is headless, and a headed Edge session is also available. This is an alternative implementation, not a native PowerShell script.

The documented capture operation is page.screenshot({ path: 'example.png' }) after opening a page and navigating to its URL. Follow Microsoft’s current Node.js installation example for the complete setup and browser launch; do not paste that JavaScript into a PowerShell script and expect it to run there.
Check whether the result is really full-page
“Screenshot of a web page” can mean the visible browser viewport or the full document from top to bottom. Selenium’s cited documentation covers the current browsing context, while Power Automate Desktop describes the entire currently displayed page. The reviewed sources do not confirm that every named method produces a stitched full-document image. For a long page, validate the output dimensions and visible content rather than assuming the capture includes content below the fold.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Edge has no Screenshot option or shortcut does nothing | A device policy may disable the feature, or the Edge version may not support it. | Check the organization’s Edge policy and version. Microsoft lists Windows support from Edge 87 and documents WebCaptureEnabled and DisableScreenshots. |
| Selenium cannot start the browser | The module, browser, and driver may not be compatible or correctly configured. | Recheck the selected module’s version-specific setup instructions and browser-driver requirements. |
| Screenshot command is missing or fails | Commands differ between Selenium-related PowerShell modules and versions. | Use the documentation for the exact installed module; do not assume a command listed by another package applies. |
| Screenshot is blank or missing dynamic content | The page may not have finished rendering when capture began. | Wait for the needed content or selector using the mechanism supported by your chosen automation stack, then confirm the output file. |
| Long page is cut off | The capture may cover only the viewport or currently displayed area. | Check the method’s documented full-page support and inspect the saved image; do not infer full-document capture from a successful screenshot call. |
| Power Automate Desktop cannot capture an element or save the image | The UI element may not be found, or the destination write may fail. | Re-select the target element and check the output path or clipboard destination. |
