For a full-page screenshot using browser developer tools on a Mac, Firefox has a documented built-in workflow: enable its “Take a screenshot of the entire page” toolbar button, or use the Web Console command :screenshot --fullpage. Chrome DevTools documents screenshots of a selected area or DOM node, not a whole page beyond the viewport in the cited procedures. Safari’s Web Inspector documentation explains how to enable and open the inspector, but does not document a full-page screenshot sequence.
Choose the capture target first: a whole page, a selected element, or a rectangle you draw. Those are different operations.

Firefox: capture a full web page
Firefox documents two ways to capture the full page. Its screenshot button may need to be enabled first; the Web Console helper offers more control over the output.

Use the Web Console for a full-page capture
- Open the Web Console in Developer Tools.
- Enter
:screenshot --fullpageand press Return. The--fullpageoption includes page content outside the visible browser window.
Firefox’s helper also accepts options for a filename, delay, device-pixel ratio, clipboard behavior, writing a file, and capturing a selected element and its descendants. For example, :screenshot --fullpage --filename page.png requests a full-page capture with that filename. Check the Firefox documentation for the available options and syntax.
The helper’s default filename includes the date and time. If you specify a filename already in use, Firefox overwrites the existing file. Its documented default save location is Downloads.
Capture a single element in Firefox
In the Inspector’s HTML pane, right-click the element’s node and choose “Screenshot Node.” Firefox saves the result to Downloads. The screenshot toolbar button can also be configured to copy an image to the clipboard.

Chrome: capture an area or a DOM node
Capture a selected area
- Open Chrome DevTools and the Command Menu.
- Type
screenshotand choose “Capture area screenshot.” - Drag across the region you want to capture.
Chrome’s Command Menu documentation notes that area capture does not work when DevTools is undocked from the browser window. Keep DevTools docked if you need this method.
Capture an element
- Open the Elements panel and select the DOM node.
- Right-click the node and choose “Capture node screenshot.”
Chrome’s DOM guide says the captured file is saved to Downloads. The menu label is documented in Chrome material that may not reflect every current version; if it is missing, check the current node’s context menu or Chrome’s DevTools documentation.
These cited Chrome procedures establish area and node capture. They do not establish a complete-page capture beyond the viewport, so use Firefox’s documented full-page workflow when that is the requirement.

Safari: open Web Inspector, but note the full-page limit
- In Safari, open Safari > Settings > Advanced. You can also open Settings with Command-comma.
- Check “Show features for web developers.”
- Open Web Inspector from the Develop menu, or press Option-Command-I.
WebKit documents these steps in its guides to enabling Web Inspector and keyboard shortcuts. Those guides explain how to enable and open the inspector, but do not provide a Safari full-page screenshot sequence. Do not treat the inspector shortcut as a documented full-page capture method.
Choose the method by what you need to save
| Need | Documented method | Useful detail |
|---|---|---|
| Entire page, including content beyond the window | Firefox screenshot toolbar button or :screenshot --fullpage |
The toolbar button may need enabling; the console helper supports output options. |
| A particular page element | Firefox “Screenshot Node” or Chrome “Capture node screenshot” | Use the Inspector or Elements panel to select the node. |
| A visible rectangle in Chrome | Command Menu > “Capture area screenshot” | DevTools must remain docked. |
| Safari Web Inspector access | Enable developer features in Safari Settings > Advanced, then open Web Inspector | The cited WebKit documentation does not establish a full-page screenshot workflow. |
Where screenshots go and how to avoid losing one
- Firefox’s documented default destination is Downloads. Its Web Console helper supports an explicit filename and clipboard-related options.
- Firefox warns that another capture using the same specified filename overwrites the earlier image. Choose a new filename if you need to keep both.
- Chrome’s DOM guide identifies Downloads as the destination for a node screenshot.
- If you need a whole page, verify that the capture includes content below the fold rather than assuming an area or element capture covers the entire document.
Troubleshooting
Firefox’s full-page button is missing
Open Developer Tools Settings, locate “Available Toolbox Buttons,” and enable “Take a screenshot of the entire page.” If the button is unavailable in your Firefox version, use the Web Console helper documented by Mozilla.
Firefox saves over a previous screenshot
The console helper overwrites an existing file when the same filename is reused. Specify a different filename for each capture or move the earlier file before taking another screenshot.

Chrome area capture does not work
Check whether DevTools is undocked. Chrome’s Command Menu documentation says area capture does not work in that arrangement; dock DevTools to the browser window and try again.
Chrome does not show “Capture node screenshot”
Make sure a DOM node is selected in Elements, then open that node’s context menu. Menu labels can vary by browser version; consult Chrome’s current DevTools help if the action is absent.

You are using Safari but need a full-page image
The cited WebKit instructions cover enabling and opening Web Inspector, not a full-page capture procedure. Use Firefox’s documented full-page capture when you need a browser developer-tools method established by the documentation cited here.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed; response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. It also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
