The right screenshot method depends on what must appear in the image. To include the browser frame, use a window capture: press Windows + Shift + S on Windows and choose Window, or open the macOS Screenshot app and choose Window. To capture everything below the fold, use Firefox’s Take Screenshot command and select Save full page. A normal operating-system capture includes only the pixels currently visible on screen.
Choose the capture scope first
Decide which of these outputs you need before pressing a shortcut:

A window capture is not the same as a full-page capture. The former records a rectangle on your display; the latter asks the browser to render content that is outside the display area.
Windows 10 and 11: capture the browser window
Include the complete visible browser window
- Bring the browser to the front and resize it as desired.
- Press Windows logo key + Shift + S. Windows opens the Snipping Tool overlay.
- Choose Window from the capture modes.
- Move the pointer over the browser window and click it.
- Open the Snipping Tool notification or editor to annotate, copy, save, or share the result.
Microsoft documents that a snip is automatically copied to the Snipping Tool window, where it can be edited, saved, and shared. This mode includes the browser frame; it does not include other monitors or windows behind it.

Capture only part of the browser
- Press Windows + Shift + S.
- Select Rectangle.
- Drag around the page area, address bar, or other region you want.
- Release the mouse button, then edit or save the snip.
Rectangle mode is useful when you want page content without the browser’s tabs and toolbar. Because the selection is tied to screen pixels, scrolling after the selection does not add hidden content.
Where Windows saves the image
The shortcut places the capture in the Snipping Tool workflow and copies it for immediate pasting. Use the editor’s save command to choose a folder and file name. If you paste directly into an email, chat, or image editor, the clipboard copy may be all you need. Saving explicitly is safer when the image is an attachment or record.
Saving a browser snip as HTML
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool documentation notes that when a snip is made from a browser window and saved as an HTML file, the URL appears below the snip. Use that format only when preserving the source address with the capture is useful; use a normal image format for ordinary sharing.
macOS: capture a browser window or selected area
Capture the browser window
- Open the Screenshot app. On macOS Mojave 10.14 and later, press Shift + Command + 5 to open its control bar.
- Choose the option to capture a window.
- Move the camera pointer over the browser window and click.
- Choose where to save the resulting image, or use the available copy and sharing controls.
Window mode records the browser window as a visible object, including its frame. It does not create a stitched image of the page’s unseen lower sections.
Capture just the page or another region
- Open the Screenshot controls with Shift + Command + 5.
- Choose Capture Selected Portion.
- Drag the boundary around the webpage content.
- Click Capture, then use the thumbnail or chosen destination to edit and save it.
Apple notes that some applications, including Apple TV, can restrict window screenshots. That is an application-specific limitation, not a general restriction on browser windows.

Find the saved screenshot
The Screenshot controls show the current save destination. Open Options before capturing to select a folder, Desktop, Documents, Clipboard, Mail, Messages, or another available destination. If you cannot find the file, repeat the shortcut and check the selected destination rather than searching every folder.
Firefox: capture a visible area or the entire web page
Open Take Screenshot
- Right-click an empty part of the page and choose Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl + Shift + S on Windows or Linux, or Command + Shift + S on macOS.
- Choose one of the capture targets: a manually selected region, an automatically detected page part, the visible page, or the full page.
- Choose Save full page for the complete scrolling document, or Save visible for the viewport currently shown.
- Download the image or copy it to the clipboard.
Firefox’s help describes this feature as capturing visible parts of web pages, or even full web pages, with options to copy or save the result. The browser performs the stitching, so content outside the current window can be included without manually scrolling and joining screenshots.
When full-page capture is not perfect
Review the result before sharing it. Sticky navigation bars may appear repeatedly or overlap sections; lazy-loaded images may not be loaded until you scroll; and a page with an internal scroll panel may leave that panel clipped. Cookie notices, newsletter forms, and chat widgets can also cover content. These are site-layout behaviors, not guarantees that every page will render identically in a full-page image.

Firefox Developer Tools for repeatable captures
For a technical or repeatable workflow, open Firefox Developer Tools and use the Web Console :screenshot command. The full-page option includes content outside the current window; Firefox’s documentation says -fullpage is appended to the filename. This route is useful when you are already working in Developer Tools or need a command-driven capture. For occasional screenshots, the context-menu command is simpler.
Make the capture readable before you save it
- Set the viewport first: maximize or resize the browser so the visible layout matches the context you want to show.
- Wait for content: allow fonts, images, and client-rendered components to finish loading.
- Dismiss obstructions: close consent banners, sign-in prompts, newsletter dialogs, and chat bubbles when they hide the target.
- Check zoom: browser zoom changes how much content fits in a window and can make text look unexpectedly large or small.
- Inspect the edges: verify that the address bar, page title, or selected region was not clipped.
- Choose a useful format: PNG preserves text and interface edges; JPEG is smaller for photographic pages. Use the clipboard for a quick paste and a saved file when you need a durable attachment.
Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Click the desktop or browser first, then try again. On some keyboards, the Windows, Command, or function-key behavior is remapped. Use the Start menu to open Snipping Tool on Windows or the Screenshot app on macOS if the shortcut remains unavailable.
The screenshot contains only what I can see
That is expected from Window, Rectangle, and selected-area captures. Use Firefox’s Save full page for a document that extends below the fold. A normal operating-system capture cannot infer content that is not currently rendered on the display.

The browser frame is missing
You probably selected a page region instead of a window. Repeat the capture and choose Window on Windows or the window mode in macOS Screenshot. In Firefox, the page tool intentionally targets webpage content rather than the operating-system window chrome.

Scroll through the page once before capturing so lazy-loaded resources have a chance to appear. Wait for network activity and animations to settle, then run Save full page again. If the blank area belongs to an embedded frame or an inner scroll container, the browser may not expose that content to the full-page stitch.
A banner or chat widget covers the page
Close it before capturing. If it returns on every load, use a private window, site settings, or a capture workflow that can dismiss or hide selectors. Never remove a consent control when you still need to interact with it legitimately.
I cannot find the saved file
Check the destination shown in Screenshot options on macOS or the save dialog in Snipping Tool. Firefox normally downloads the image through its configured download location; check the browser’s download list if the file is not visible.
The capture is restricted or black
Some applications deliberately block window screenshots. Apple specifically identifies certain protected apps, such as Apple TV, as examples. Browser pages can also contain protected video or cross-origin embeds that do not render normally in a capture. Capture the permitted page area or consult the service’s export feature instead.
