If you still see a paywall, first check the signed-in account and subscription tier: being logged in alone does not guarantee access. These steps are for capturing a post you are authorized to view; a screenshot does not grant permission to redistribute it.
Make sure the post is available to your account
- Open the post in Substack’s app or on the web, and sign in with the account associated with the publication subscription. Substack says audience-specific content can be shown on the web and in the app according to subscription status: Substack’s audience-specific content guidance.
- Check that the post itself is visible before taking a screenshot. A post reserved for paying subscribers can remain behind a paywall for a free subscriber, even when that reader is signed in. Substack describes paid-post visibility in its Android paid-post instructions.
- If you need to sign in again, verify that you used the email or login method tied to the subscription. Substack documents email-link verification and password login options in its app login help.
Capture the visible post on your device
These shortcuts capture what is displayed on screen. The exact preview, save location, and available editing controls can vary by device and software version.

Capture a long post
A normal screenshot records the visible portion of the page. For a post that extends beyond the screen, use a full-page or scrolling capture only if your device and app support it.
- iPhone: Apple describes full-page screenshots in Safari for supported pages. The option is not established for every Substack app or page combination.
- Android: Google says scrolling screenshots work on Android 12 and later on most screens that can scroll. Availability can still depend on the device and screen.
- Otherwise: Scroll through the post and capture successive sections, keeping enough overlap to make the order clear.
Check the screenshot before sharing
Review the saved image. The surrounding screen may include account details, profile information, or other private material. Crop or redact unrelated details when appropriate. Capturing a post you can access does not by itself establish permission to share or republish it; copyright, subscription terms, and applicable rules may affect reuse.

Troubleshooting
The post still shows a paywall
- Confirm that you are signed into the account associated with the subscription, rather than another Substack account.
- Check whether the subscription tier includes that post. A free subscription does not provide access to every paid post.
- If the account or tier is correct but the post is still unavailable, use Substack’s login and subscription help rather than trying to bypass the paywall.
The screenshot shortcut does not work
- On Android, hardware button combinations can vary by manufacturer; check the device maker’s instructions if Power + Volume Down fails.
- On iPhone, use the combination that matches whether the device has Face ID or a Home button.
- On Windows or Mac, make sure the intended key combination is pressed together. If a full-page capture is unavailable, use ordinary screenshots of successive sections.
The long-page option is missing
Full-page and scrolling screenshots have platform and screen-support limits. Try the post in Safari on iPhone or use Android’s scrolling capture on a supported Android 12-or-later screen. If neither offers the option, capture readable sections one at a time.
