Use Windows Snipping Tool for any visible section
Snipping Tool works over webpages, desktop applications, and other visible Windows content. It captures what is currently on your screen rather than reconstructing the page’s HTML, so first position the exact section you want inside the browser window.
- Open the webpage and scroll until the target section is visible.
- Press Windows + Shift + S. Windows dims the screen and displays the Snipping Tool capture bar.
- Choose Rectangle for a standard box, or choose Freeform when the area has an irregular outline.
- Drag around the section. Release the mouse button or trackpad when the selection is complete.
- Select the notification that appears, or open Snipping Tool, to review the image.
- Use the available editing controls, then choose the save, copy, or share command you need.
The shortcut captures a still image immediately. It does not automatically include text that is farther down the page, hidden behind a collapsed control, or outside the selected screen area.
Rectangle versus Freeform
- Rectangle: best for a paragraph, table, card, image, or other box-shaped region. Drag from one corner to the opposite corner.
- Freeform: useful when you want to outline an irregular shape. Select Freeform before drawing the boundary around the visible content.
Edit, copy, and save the result
Opening the notification takes you to Snipping Tool. Its documented editing actions include a pen, highlighter, shapes, text, and crop controls. You can mark an important sentence, obscure a small detail by cropping it out, copy the image to the clipboard, or save a file for later use. Saving after editing prevents you from losing annotations when you close the window.

Capture a section directly in Microsoft Edge
Edge includes a browser-level Screenshot command. It is useful when you want a webpage capture rather than a general screen snip.
- Open the page in Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + S, or open Screenshot from the page’s right-click menu or the Settings and more menu.
- Choose Capture area.
- Drag over the part of the webpage you want.
- Choose Copy to place the image on the clipboard, or choose Markup capture to annotate it before saving.
Microsoft’s current interface calls this feature Screenshot; older references may call it Web Capture. On a work-managed computer, an administrator can disable it with the WebCaptureEnabled policy. If Screenshot is missing, use Windows + Shift + S instead.
Capture a whole, long webpage
When the required content extends below the visible window, open Edge Screenshot and choose Capture full page. Edge then creates a long webpage capture instead of limiting the result to the currently visible screen. Review the complete image before copying or saving it, because a full-page result can be much taller than a normal screenshot.

Choose the right Windows method

Prepare the page before you capture
A few seconds of preparation usually produces a more useful image:
- Close overlays that are not part of the section, or dismiss a cookie notice if it blocks the content you need.
- Set the browser zoom and window size so text is readable without cutting off the section.
- Scroll to the exact heading, table row, or image you want. For a visible-area snip, everything outside the screen is unavailable.
- Expand accordions or menus only when their contents belong in the capture.
- Move the pointer away from important text before dragging, so it does not obscure the image.
- For a long article, use Edge’s full-page option instead of stitching multiple screen snips together.
Screen captures preserve the pixels Windows displays. They do not provide a separate, selectable text layer, and they do not guarantee that lazy-loaded images or interactive content will appear unless the page has loaded them before capture.
Keyboard and input tips
- On a compact keyboard, the Windows key may be marked with the Windows logo.
- If you use a touchpad, press and hold while dragging the selection; a mouse can make precise corners easier.
- After a snip, use the notification to reach the editor quickly. If the notification disappears, open Snipping Tool from the Start menu and review recent captures there.
- For keyboard-driven workflows, use the shortcut to open the overlay, then use the capture controls shown by your Windows installation; labels can vary slightly by release.
Troubleshooting
Windows + Shift + S does nothing
Confirm that the Windows key is not locked by a keyboard utility or gaming mode. Open Snipping Tool from Start to verify that the app is installed and launches. If it opens manually but the shortcut still fails, restart Snipping Tool or Windows and try again.

The screenshot is blank or shows the wrong window
Bring the browser to the foreground before pressing the shortcut. Wait for the target section to render, then start a new snip. A screen snip records the display at the moment you drag, so switching windows during selection can produce an unexpected result.
Edge Screenshot is not available
Your Edge installation may use a different menu location, or a work administrator may have disabled the feature through policy. Use the right-click menu and the Settings and more menu to look for Screenshot. If it remains unavailable, Windows Snipping Tool is the dependable alternative for visible content.
The page is longer than one screen
Use Edge Screenshot → Capture full page. Windows Snipping Tool’s normal rectangle and freeform modes capture only what is visible at once; they do not automatically scroll through a webpage.

Text or images are cut off
Resize the browser window, adjust zoom, and scroll until the complete section is visible before selecting it. For a section that still cannot fit on one screen, capture the full page in Edge and crop the resulting image afterward.
The capture contains a cookie banner, chat bubble, or popup
Dismiss the element before taking a local screen capture. If it cannot be dismissed or you need repeatable automated captures, use the API workflow below, which can remove common consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the image is generated.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I screenshot a webpage section that is not currently visible?
Not with the ordinary Windows rectangle or freeform snip; scroll the section into view first. In Edge, use Screenshot → Capture full page when the content extends below the fold.
Does Snipping Tool capture selectable webpage text?
It creates an image of the displayed pixels. The result is not a separate HTML or text document.
Why is Edge Screenshot missing on my work computer?
An administrator can disable Edge’s web-capture capability through the WebCaptureEnabled policy. Windows Snipping Tool remains available unless it is separately restricted.
