No. Greenshot is documented as a screenshot utility, not a screen recorder. Its official help covers capturing a region, window, full screen, last region and Internet Explorer pages, then editing or exporting still images. It does not describe a video-recording control, video workflow or video output format. To make a recording, use a recorder built into Windows or macOS instead.
What Greenshot actually captures
Greenshot’s official help describes still-image capture modes: a selected region, the last region, an active or selected window, the complete screen and an Internet Explorer page. Its full-screen instruction is explicit: “Creates a screenshot of the complete screen.” The same documentation covers an image editor for annotations, highlighting, obfuscation and cropping, plus capture, output and plugin settings.
That documentation does not provide a record button, timeline, microphone setting, frame rate, video codec or video export option. The careful conclusion is therefore that Greenshot’s documented feature set does not include screen-video recording. A full-screen Greenshot capture is one image, not a recording that continues while you move the pointer or open windows.
The downloads page lists Greenshot 1.3.315 as the latest stable Windows release, dated 20 March 2026. That release listing identifies the version and date; it does not add a video feature. For capability questions, the help page remains the relevant reference. Check the vendor’s current pages if you are evaluating a later build.

Greenshot is free and open source for Windows, with the downloads page displaying a “Only $1.99” contribution prompt. Neither the release listing nor the help page documents video recording.
Why a screenshot cannot substitute for a video
A screenshot records one visual state at one moment. A video records a sequence of frames over time and may include system audio, application audio, microphone input or cursor activity. Greenshot’s region and full-screen commands finish by producing an image for editing or output; they do not maintain a capture session.
- Still capture: useful for a bug report, instruction, reference image or annotated design review.
- Video capture: required for a software demonstration, reproducing an animation, recording a game or showing a multi-step workflow.
- Audio: a separate concern. Greenshot’s documented screenshot workflow has no recording or microphone controls.
Installing the current listed version, choosing Full screen, or repeatedly taking screenshots will not create a continuous video. Repeated images can be assembled into an animation with other software, but that is a separate workflow and not a Greenshot recording mode.
Choose a recorder by platform and target
Windows and macOS include different recording tools. Pick according to the area you need to capture, whether you need an app or game recording, and whether narration or other audio is required.

Windows: record a rectangular area with Snipping Tool
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 describe a video-snip mode for a rectangular selection. Open Snipping Tool, choose Record, select New, draw the area, start recording and stop when finished. Microsoft also lists Windows logo key + Shift + R as a shortcut to launch the recording flow. The clip can be saved as-is or opened in Clipchamp.
- Open Snipping Tool from the Start menu, or press Windows + Shift + R.
- Select Record, then New.
- Drag around the rectangular part of the screen to include.
- Start the recording, perform the demonstration and stop it from the recording controls.
- Save the clip or open it in Clipchamp if you need further editing.
Feature availability depends on the installed Windows version and updates, so an unchanged or older installation may not show the same controls. This option is best when you need a bounded region rather than an entire app session.

Windows: record an app or game with Xbox Game Bar
Xbox Game Bar is the documented Windows choice when the target is an app or game. Press Windows + Alt + R to start or stop recording. Press Windows + Alt + M to toggle the microphone. Microsoft says the resulting video is saved as an MP4 in VideosCaptures.

- Press Windows + Alt + R to begin.

Game Bar and Snipping Tool are not interchangeable: Game Bar is aimed at an app or game, while Snipping Tool records a selected rectangle. Microsoft’s cited instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; availability can vary with system configuration and updates.

Mac: use Screenshot controls or QuickTime Player
Apple documents two built-in approaches: the Screenshot controls and QuickTime Player. Open the Screenshot controls, choose a screen-recording option, select the area or full screen as offered, then start and stop the recording. QuickTime Player provides a New Screen Recording command when you prefer an application-based workflow.
Apple warns that some apps, including Apple TV, may not allow their windows to be recorded. A recording that works for the desktop may therefore fail or show protected content when the target is a particular application.

Before recording, decide whether the viewer needs the whole desktop or only one region, whether narration is needed, and whether the application might block capture. Close unrelated windows and notifications, select the correct microphone, and check the destination folder before starting a long session.

“Full screen” means video
It does not. Greenshot labels full-screen capture as a screenshot of the complete screen. The command captures the current frame and returns an image.
A plugin will turn Greenshot into a recorder
The official help documents plugins and output settings, but it does not document a video-recording plugin or workflow. Do not assume that a listed plugin creates a recorder; verify the plugin’s own current documentation before relying on it.
Greenshot appears to capture only a blank or wrong window
That is a screenshot-target issue, not evidence of a hidden recording mode. Re-select the region or active window, confirm which display is being captured and use the recorder designed for the target app when you need motion over time.
The Windows recording control is missing
Check your Windows edition and updates, then confirm which tool you opened. Snipping Tool’s Record control and Game Bar’s shortcuts are separate features. If Snipping Tool has no Record option, use the Game Bar workflow for a supported app or consult Microsoft’s current requirements.

The Mac recording stops or omits an app window
Some applications restrict recording. Follow Apple’s guidance, test a short clip first and treat protected-app behavior as an application limitation rather than a Greenshot problem.
