How to Screenshot a Paywalled Article You Subscribe To

Use your device’s screenshot controls to capture a subscribed article you can already view. Learn the iPhone Safari full-page and PDF options, plus the limits and risks of automating authenticated captures.

If you can already read the article with your valid subscription, you can capture the portion visible on your device with its built-in screenshot controls. A screenshot records what your account can access; it does not unlock hidden or restricted content. For a long webpage in Safari on iPhone, Apple also documents a Full Page screenshot that can be saved as an image or PDF.

Capture a page you can already access

  1. Open the article in the browser or app where your subscription session works.
  2. Confirm the text you want to keep is visible. A screenshot cannot reveal content your account cannot see.
  3. Use your device’s normal screenshot control. On an iPhone with Face ID, quickly press and release the Side and Volume Up buttons together. On an iPhone with a Home button, quickly press and release the Side and Home buttons together.
  4. Open the saved capture and check that it contains the intended content and is legible. Apple says iPhone screenshots are saved to Photos by default.

Apple documents these iPhone controls and the Safari options below in its screenshot instructions. Menu names and availability may vary with software versions.

Save a long Safari page on iPhone

For a long webpage, take a screenshot in Safari, open its preview, and select Full Page. Apple documents saving the result as an image to Photos or as a PDF to Files. This is a documented iPhone and Safari workflow; it should not be assumed to exist in every browser or publisher app.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save a Safari webpage as a PDF

Apple also documents a webpage-to-PDF workflow in Safari on iPhone: use Share, open Markup, tap Done, then choose Save File To. Exact labels may differ by software version. See Apple’s Safari PDF instructions.

Automate captures only when the session is authorized

A remote screenshot service renders the page in its own browser, so it needs credentials the publisher accepts. Cloudflare Browser Run documents using valid session cookies for authenticated screenshots and points to other authentication methods in its API reference. ScreenshotOne documents cookies and authentication headers; its guide notes that obtaining cookies may require implementing a sign-in flow. These mechanisms can automate a capture of a page your account is allowed to view, but they do not create subscription access or guarantee that every publisher accepts automation.

Do not use another person’s session or try to bypass a login, bot check, session validation, or access restriction. Treat cookies, tokens, and authorization headers as sensitive credentials; do not paste them into a service you do not trust. Also check the publisher’s terms before using a remote renderer, since technical support for credentials does not establish that the publisher permits automated access.

ScreenshotNeo for repeat captures

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its API accepts cookies and other request options, but you still need credentials accepted by the target publisher, and the publisher’s terms still apply. For this task, a browser or app where your subscription already works is usually the simpler manual route.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Or skip the browser setup

For an authorized page that the remote browser can access, a single GET request returns a screenshot. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for authentication and options.

Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts the cookie/consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, with the outcome identified in response headers. An MCP server offers screenshot tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. You can sign up for free.

Choose the capture method that fits

Method Setup and session Output and storage Best fit
On-device screenshot Use the device where the valid subscription session already works; no credentials need to be handed to another service. On iPhone, screenshots save to Photos by default. A quick capture of visible content.
iPhone Safari Full Page Use the screenshot preview’s Full Page option on a long Safari webpage. Apple documents saving as an image to Photos or a PDF to Files. A long webpage when the iPhone/Safari option is available.
Remote automated rendering Requires credentials accepted by the target site. Cookie or header support does not make every sign-in flow compatible or establish permission for automation. Depends on the selected service and its configured output. Repeatable captures when the publisher permits it and the remote browser can authenticate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Keep the capture private and check reuse rights

Access and permission to store, share, or republish are separate questions. Check the publication’s terms for your intended use; a subscription alone does not settle whether redistribution is allowed. Store the capture securely, and consider keeping the article URL and capture date with a private reference copy.

Policies are publisher-specific. For example, W3C says a screenshot of part of its site may be used without permission if it does not imply W3C sponsorship or endorsement; that policy applies to W3C and should not be treated as a general rule for other publishers. See W3C’s permissions policy.

Troubleshoot a missing or incomplete capture

  • The page shows a sign-in prompt: the active browser or app session may have expired, or the capture environment may not have the credentials the site accepts. Sign in through the normal authorized flow; do not try to bypass the restriction.
  • The screenshot omits the rest of a long page: use Safari’s Full Page option on iPhone if available. Other browsers and publisher apps may not provide the same control.
  • The PDF or image is hard to read: reopen the saved file and check its scale and page boundaries. If necessary, capture smaller visible portions rather than assuming a full-page option exists.
  • A remote capture fails despite a working local session: the remote browser may not have a valid publisher-accepted session or may not support that sign-in flow. Cookie and header features are not universal authentication support; do not send credentials to an untrusted service.
